On the fourth night at sea, the storm found them.
It rolled in from the east like a wall, black and enormous, tearing the sky open with lightning. The Gray Lantern climbed each wave and slid down the other side, her timbers groaning, her single lamp swinging wildly at the masthead. Ren had never been on the ocean before. He had never imagined it would be so loud. "Secure the cargo!" Captain Tave bellowed. "Hold fast! Mister Ren, if you're going to be sick, do it downwind!" Pip was already being sick, bent over the rail with Hesk's hand firmly planted between her shoulder blades. Dara lashed crates with a coil of rope and a stream of inventive swearing. Ren wedged himself against the mainmast and tried not to think about how many things were trying to kill them. Then the water beneath the hull went very still. "That's wrong," said the captain quietly. A ridge of foam crested to starboard. Then another. Something long and dark rose out of the sea in the lightning's glare. It had a head like a broken anchor, rows of crooked teeth, and a body that went on and on, coiling around the ship like a rope. "Tidewyrm," Captain Tave whispered. "Gods in the deep." The ship lurched. The wyrm's coils tightened, and every plank screamed. A sailor went over the side with a shout. Pip screamed too, and Ren moved before he had decided to. He had no stone skin anymore. No cave bear strength. The loans had dissolved with everything else. All he had was a sword Aldric had sharpened for him and thirty years of life he could not afford to lose. He ran across the heaving deck and cut at the coil nearest the rail. The blade bounced. The scales were thick as armor, and the force of the swing nearly wrenched his shoulder out of its socket. The wyrm hissed and flicked its head toward him, and the Ledger woke like an alarm. [ HOLDER IN DANGER. ] [ COLLATERAL AVAILABLE: TIDEWYRM (ALIVE). ] [ OFFER: BORROW SCALE-HIDE (COST: 0.2 YEARS) ] His breath caught. He had sworn he would never borrow again. But Pip was on the other side of that coil, and the ship was breaking apart. He took one heartbeat to feel ashamed. Yes. The hide came over him like cold armor. The next cut sliced clean through the scales, and the wyrm shrieked. Black blood sprayed across the deck. Hesk dropped her shield and charged. Dara hurled a fire flask at the creature's eye, and the whole sea lit up orange for one furious second. Ren climbed the thrashing coils with his sword in both hands, and drove it down through the soft hollow behind the skull. The Tidewyrm shuddered once. Then it sank, slowly, into the dark water, taking its coils with it. The storm lasted another hour. By the end, nobody had the strength to speak. Ren slid down the mast and sat on the wet deck, breathing in ragged gasps. The Ledger window hung in front of him. [ BORROWED: 0.2 YEARS. ] [ MONSTER DEFEATED: TIDEWYRM. ] [ SURPLUS: +0.9 YEARS. ] [ NET BALANCE: +0.7 YEARS. ] He stared at it, stunned. He had come out ahead. "Ren?" Dara knelt beside him, soaked and shivering, with a gash across her forehead. "Are you hurt?" "No." He laughed weakly. "I think I just bought back eight months of my life." "With a sea monster?" "With a very large sea monster." Pip crawled over, green-faced and shaking, and flopped against his side. "I hate boats," she said. "We know," said Dara. It was just before dawn when Ren noticed the new line in the corner of his sight. It had not been there when the storm broke. It was written in a handwriting he did not know, rushed and uneven. [ MESSAGE FROM ACCOUNT: UNKNOWN HOLDER ] [ "STOP. DO NOT COME TO CALLOWAY. THEY WILL TAKE YOU TOO." ] He read it four times. Then he looked up. Beyond the bow, on the horizon, a faint gold line was breaking the dark. It was land, and a harbor full of tiny lights. "Captain," he said. "How far to Calloway?" Tave squinted at the glow, then at him. "By sunrise. Why?" Ren closed his hand around his father's coin. "No reason," he said.Latest Chapter
Chapter 25: The Boon
The final was a formality. Selka Dray, the last of Mael's champions, had lost her power with the rest. She fought bravely and well, but she was only a woman with a sword now, and Ren beat her in ninety seconds without drawing blood. The crowd screamed his name.He stood in the center of the arena, sweating and half deaf, while the herald unrolled a scroll and announced, in a voice that cracked with astonishment, that the champion of the three hundred and twelfth Grand Tournament was Ren Calder of Veyra.A golden cup was placed in his hands. A laurel crown was set on his head. The Treasurer himself descended from the balcony, smiling like a man at a funeral."Champion," said Corvane Mael. His voice carried through the arena. "By ancient right, you may ask a boon. What do you wish?"Ren looked at the pit, now empty. At Hesk in the stands, free. At the huge, gray-blue banner of the Treasury hanging above the north wall."I want the Weighing Floors closed," he said. "All of them. Today."
Chapter 24: Torvald the Unbroken
The semifinal was not a fair fight.Torvald Brandt, called the Unbroken, was the Treasurer's greatest champion. He was nearly seven feet tall, built like a siege tower, and he had never lost a match in eleven years. His armor was black iron. His weapon was a double-headed axe the size of a door. Every thread of silver in the arena seemed to wind toward him, thick as ropes, glowing like a stormcloud.Ren watched him demolish a man in the quarterfinal in nine seconds."Four of those threads are Ilyra's," he told Dara in the tunnel. "The rest come from other holders I can't see. Other Lenders. Maybe in other cities.""How many does he have?""Too many."He lifted his eyes. Hesk was seated in the first row of the stands, no longer chained, sitting between Granna Oss and Pip. She gave him a thumbs up, solemnly, as if they were children at a school fair.He walked onto the sand.Torvald lowered his axe and studied him. His voice, when he spoke, was thin and polite and unexpectedly gentle."
Chapter 23: Hesk
The bracket drew Ren against Hesk in the round of sixteen. He read the name on the herald's scroll twice before he understood it. Then he looked up at the balcony, and the Treasurer raised his teacup, smiling, and Ren knew that someone had done this on purpose."Voss," he muttered."What?" said Dara. She had slipped into the fighters' passage with a forged pass. Her face was pale. "Ren, you can't. You can't. She's your friend.""I know.""If you beat her, they'll keep her in the pit. If you lose, they take the Ledger.""I know.""Then what are you going to do?""I don't know," he said.He walked onto the sand.Hesk was already waiting. They had given her a sword and a shield and a collar of pale iron. It sat around her neck like a dog's. In the sunlight, it gave off a thin, wavering shimmer. A thread ran from it, thicker than the others, up into the air toward the balcony."Ren," she said. Her voice was low and flat and entirely calm. "Don't hold back.""Hesk...""They're listening. I
Chapter 22: Silver Threads
By the third round, Ren had begun to see the threads. He noticed them first on Selka Dray, the Treasurer's champion in the second bracket. She was a slender woman with a pale braid and a long, thin blade that moved like a snake. Ren watched her fight a mercenary from the bleachers, and something nagged at him. Her movements were too fast. Too clean. Nobody trained that hard. Then the light caught her wrist, and he saw it.A single silver thread, thinner than hair, ran from her arm up into the air, curving high over the arena toward the north balcony. He went still."What?" said Dara, beside him. She had slipped down to the fighters' rail to share a bowl of noodles. "You look sick.""Look at Selka's hand. Does she have anything on it?"Dara squinted. "No.""Nothing silver?""Ren. No."He breathed out. Of course she couldn't see it. This was the Ledger's gift, or curse. The silver threads were only visible to holders. On the sand, Selka's blade licked out. Her opponent fell with a clean
Chapter 21: The Arena Gate
The Grand Arena of Calloway sat at the edge of the city, carved into the cliff like a great stone bowl. Its tiers rose sixty rows high and held forty thousand people. On the morning of the first fight, every seat was full.Ren waited in the dark passage beneath the stands, listening to the crowd above him. The noise came down through the stone like thunder in the next valley. He had been given a number, a leather vest two sizes too small, and a plain iron sword that smelled of oil. Around him stood sixty-three other entrants. Dockhands. Mercenaries. A few cold, silent men whose eyes passed over everyone as though counting. Not one of them looked at the others.Dara had managed one last word with him at the gate. "Don't die," she had said. "Don't be a hero. Don't do anything I wouldn't do.""What wouldn't you do?""I'll tell you after you win."The iron gate ahead of him swung open, and the light hit his face. The arena floor was white sand raked into perfect lines. A single raised bal
Chapter 20: A Cup of Tea with the Devil
Voss was waiting for him in a cafe on the harbor road.Ren had not expected that. He had imagined a throne room, or an arena, or a shadowed alley with guards in every doorway. Instead, he found a bright little shop with blue shutters, a chalkboard menu, and a single table by the window where a thin man in a gray coat sat drinking tea.Halvane Voss looked up and smiled."Mr. Calder. How good of you to come. Please, sit. The honey cake is quite remarkable."Ren did not sit. "Where is she?""Ms. Hesk is perfectly comfortable. She is in a private suite, eating well and refusing to speak to anyone." Voss sipped. "Remarkable woman. I rather like her.""You took her to get to me.""I did, and I regret the means." He set the cup down. He looked older than Ren remembered, thin and gray, his collar slightly too loose. A faint blue line still ran under the skin of his throat. "But I could think of no other way to bring you here without Lord Mael learning of it.""You work for Mael.""I advise hi
