CHAPTER 8
“I can see and appreciate your effort towards getting it done, but you can keep it with you for the meantime,” Desmond said.
At the hearing of this, Harrison almost panicked again.
He thought Desmond was annoyed, but was only stylishly responding calmly.
“Sir, I'm sorry. I'm here to do whatever you command and would not in any way stress you or intentionally do what you would not like. I'm so sorry, Sir. Nothing of such would happen again,” Arthur pleaded.
“If you do not mind, I can help deliver it to the owner's doorstep in less than thirty minutes. I promise to meet up this time around, Sir,” he continued, fixing his gaze on Desmond to make sure he read all his body language, trying to understand what it meant.
“It’s fine, don’t bother. It’s just not needed anymore,” Desmond said.
“Be calm. You don’t have issues with me, I assure you,” Desmond added, his tone cool.
“Uhm, I need to ask about something quick”
“Yes, Sir,” Harrison replied, leaning closer to Desmond as though he was dear to him.
“You know anyone with the name Alexander?”
“Zack? Yes, Sir. I do.”
“What do you know about him?” Desmond inquired.
“Sir, Alex is the eldest son of the Zack family, and he is in charge of all the businesses owned by the Zacks,” Arthur began.
“They are one of the top seven elite families in Halcyon City.
“The family business ranks number one on the ultra-exclusive stage here at Zenith Lux.”
“Ultra-exclusive stage?” Desmond asked.
“What does it mean to be at the ultra-exclusive stage?” Desmond continued, his gaze steady as he stood properly to listen.
Arthur Harrison adjusted his tie, clearing his throat before responding.
“The ultra-exclusive stage is the pinnacle of power in Zenith Lux,” he explained.
“Only three families hold this position, and every business that passes the five crucial stages is placed under them, depending on their value and influence.”
“And the Zack family?” Desmond prompted.
Arthur nodded.
“They rank first, controlling an 89.7% profit share, and their highest worth so far is one billion dollars.
“Their influence dictates market trends, making them untouchable for the past two years, up until now.”
A slow smirk escaped Desmond’s lips.
“Okay,” he replied.
“Other benefits that come with being at an ultra-exclusive stage are the yearly profits, which the first rank stands a chance to win exclusive ownership of a private island and a private jet.”
“Second place stands to win high-end corporate shares and an elite private yacht. And the third…?”
“A luxury annual vacation package and a chance to get goods worth one million dollars at the top-rank boutique, which is Luxoria Ventures (LV).”
“So you mean by the end of the year, if the Zacks maintain their position, these are all they would get?” Desmond inquired, his expression indifferent.
Arthur quickly picked up from his choice of words.
“Sir, if you think the idea is not worth it, we can cancel the decision right away.
“Actually, this is the first year we implemented it, and we have made it known to the members. But they can also be told that the deal is not like that anymore. No one dares to drag that with us, Sir. Whatever you agree upon is final.”
As a smart and experienced person, Arthur quickly noticed from Desmond’s choice of words that he deemed the Zacks unworthy of competition.
What do you expect?
Someone liable to be the vice president of the most powerful company in the city could not be a dull person.
“Sir, can you come into my office to have your sit so we can discuss the matter?”
“Thank you. Not a serious matter, actually,” Desmond said, rejecting the offer.
“Uhm… it's a great idea that you have such packages as rewards, but ….”
Before Desmond could finish his sentence, they all heard footsteps echoing from the hallway.
Fast, hurried steps, as if someone was running.
The sound of the footwear striking the floor alerted them.
Before one of Arthur's men could figure out who was disturbing the entire place with their footsteps, a lady already appeared in their midst, panting heavily.
Ignoring everyone else standing there, she rushed to Arthur’s front.
“Mr. Arthur, uhhh…. Go..Good day, Sir,” the lady said, trying to control her breathing so she could talk properly.
“I know it’s by sheer luck I met with you today, I'm Camilla Frederick,” she said, still swallowing her spit, trying to regain her breath properly to speak well.
Desmond wondered what could be wrong with her and immediately interfered.
“Calm down, young lady,” Desmond said, his voice cool.
The lady turned to give Desmond a slight nod, appreciating his concern.
“Thank you,” she said while gazing at him.
As she averted her gaze to look at Desmond, a bell rang in his brain.
His pupils shrank, and with lightning speed, his thoughts went on a rampage.
The slight mark on the lady’s face triggered a memory in Desmond’s mind.
It was at the same spot where he had a scar.
Could she be the girl he had been looking for?
Years ago, when Desmond had been hospitalized, the only thing he had clearly remembered upon waking was that unique mark on a girl’s face.
He had been certain that if he ever saw her again, he would recognize her instantly.
But how had he mistaken her for Tatiana? Tatiana didn’t have a mark at all.
Perhaps fate had played a trick on him.
He had simply assumed that the little girl was Tatiana, especially since she had always been by Lord George’s side whenever he visited.
Desmond was still lost in thought when Arthur broke the silence.
“Miss Camilla Frederick, you are welcome, but I'm busy now. Please, sit at the reception,” Arthur said nonchalantly.
Camilla hesitated for a moment, her breathing still slightly uneven.
She looked like she had something urgent to say, but Arthur’s dismissive tone made her pause.
Desmond, however, was still processing everything.
His eyes remained fixed on Camilla, thoughts colliding in his mind.
Something about her presence felt significant.
He couldn’t ignore it.

From her actions, something serious must be happening to her.Desmond would be glad to assist her.If she was the lady he thought, good for him.Otherwise, she would be lucky.“Yes, sir,” Arthur responded. Like a well-oiled machine, he quickly rushed to attend to Camilla.“How may I help you, Miss Camilla?”“Uhm… sir, I’m here to bring to your notice that the Frederick Group has not been placed, but we have passed the five crucial stages. Perhaps there was a mix-up,” she said, her voice trembling.“Oh? Can I have proof of that?” Arthur inquired.“Here it is, sir,” Camilla said, stretching forward the spiral-banded documents in her hand, which clearly stated where the Frederick Group had passed the stages. Her hands were slightl

She had tried her best, there was nothing more she could do.As she reached the elevator, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She hesitated, pulling it out. An unknown number.“Hello?” she answered, her voice low.“Miss Camilla, please return to Mr. Harrison’s office immediately,” the voice instructed. Her breath caught. Was this another rejection? Another reason to humiliate her? But she had no choice. Turning around, she retraced her steps, her heart hammering with uncertainty.Back in the office, Desmond had already instructed Harrison to accept the Fredericks as new partners. As Camilla got back to the office, she hesitated.“Mr. Harrison?” she asked, her voice guarded.“Yes. Miss Camilla, I need to review your file once again.”For a second, she didn’t understand. Then realization dawned.

Moments later, Alex and Tatiana entered Zenith Lux, heading straight to Harrison’s office.Just then, they spotted Camilla in front of the elevator, waiting for it to arrive. She was on her way to finalizing Fredericks' documentation, securing the top spot on the ultra-exclusive list.Without hesitation, Alex moved toward her, his anger boiling. If looks could kill, Camilla wouldn’t be standing upright with the way Alexander looked at her while approaching. Alex was burning to the core. If water were poured on him, it would sizzle away instantly.“You… just tell me how.”Camilla stiffened. “Excuse me?”She knew what the Zacks were like, but she hadn’t expected an attack this early.Alex smirked, giving a slow, mocking clap. “Tell me, how does it feel to climb to the top overnight?”“What’s with all this embarrassment? Are you here to fight me or…” Camilla responded.“Oh, don’t play innocent,” he sneered. “We both know your family isn’t worthy of that position. So, tell me, what e

Meanwhile, as Camilla rested on the sleek metallic chair, she slowly glanced through her phone. What she saw was astonishing. She squinted her eyes, reading again to be sure she wasn’t imagining things.“How?” she whispered in surprise.“Just now, the Zack Group has been completely canceled from partnering with Zenith Lux.” Her voice trembled with disbelief.“Has the new president found them unworthy? Or did Mr. Harrison just decide this out of the blue?” she muttered to herself, trying to process the situation. She kept thinking about how everything had shifted so drastically—from Zack Group being at the top to getting demoted, and now vanishing completely. How was this even possible? She couldn’t fathom it.“See this,” Camilla turned her phone towards Desmond, urging him to take a look.Desmond already knew what she wanted to show him. He took a quick glance and nodded with a knowing smile.“Are you sure you saw what I just showed you? They’ve been dismissed by Zenith Lux!” she said

“Uhh... what..” Alexander was about to speak before his father abruptly ended the call.It felt like a dream. His father hadn’t finished his sentence, but Alexander already knew something cruel had happened. As the call disconnected, his phone screen lit up with various notifications. The first one he clicked on was from the Zenith Lux page, where a bold statement glared back at him:“The Zack family group has been completely removed from its partnership with Zenith Lux.”“What!” His eyes widened in disbelief. His chest tightened, his pulse quickened, and within seconds, his once-immaculate suit was damp with sweat.Frantically, he lifted his head, his gaze darting around the hospital walls as if searching for answers.Could this mean the Fredericks had finally gained the upper hand?Power strong enough to bring down the mighty Zack family?Oh, shit.It was high time Alex swallowed his pride and apologized to Camilla. It seemed like she was the key to all of this.“I have to stay calm

How could the Frederick Group, a company of such caliber, have reached that stage without assistance?Impossible! She must be lying about doing nothing. She just doesn’t want anyone to know. That way, the masses wouldn’t see them as weak. But the truth is obvious, no one even needs to say it out loud."Okay, fine. Do you remember this?" Tatiana pulled out a golden pendant, shaking it slightly. It was the one Desmond had forgotten while packing away from the Lancaster villa.Just then, a man dressed casually appeared on the scene. It was Desmond. He spotted Camilla from afar and walked over to check on her."Oh! Is this yours? Of course, I do. We both had it when we were kids," Camilla said.Instantly, Tatiana turned to Desmond, her eyes filled with disdain."What the hell are you doing here? Does this place look like somewhere cheap people like you are welcome?" she scoffed in irritation."What I do here is none of your business." Desmond exhaled, his voice was sharp and nonchalant.

“What? Tatiana?” Camilla shouted in disbelief. The atmosphere instantly froze. Silence gripped the air as everyone digested the shocking truth that had just been revealed. The ladies' eyes were clear and sharp, their gazes unapologetic as they glared directly at Tatiana, daring her to do her worst. After all, they had only spoken the truth. And if she tried anything foolish, two things were certain—one, the group would seriously deal with her, and two, she would only end up tarnishing her own image. After all, she was the public figure, not them.Tatiana remained mute, her lips trembling. Shame weighed so heavily on her that she couldn’t muster a single word.Desmond stood calmly, arms folded, watching the entire scene without flinching. He wasn’t surprised—Tatiana had done worse in the past. This was nothing new to him.Camilla, on the other hand, stood stunned. She couldn’t believe what she had just heard. Her childhood friend? Desmond and Camilla entered the hall while everyone was already seated.Special guests of Zenith Lux members mostly filled the reserved section, while others who were still lobbying for a stance in the company made up the rest of the crowd. Not that they weren’t wealthy enough, but Zenith Lux was beyond classic; its standards were strict and unwavering, and its prestige was unmatched. So, if anyone made it in either at the ultra-exclusive level or under it, they were considered a success, a name that echoed in elite circles.Desmond and Camilla walked over and sat in the few empty seats among the special guests.Heads turned, and whispers spread like wildfire.Fine, a few people recognized Camilla. Not all. The Fredericks hadn’t held any known post at Zenith Lux until just a few weeks ago.But Desmond? No one knew him.So it felt odd, so unreal that some random couple would walk straight to the seats meant for distinguished guests. There was a flicker of confusion across several fac

As Desmond stepped out of House of Luxoria, heading to Camilla’s villa to drop off the items bought, his phone rang. He didn't hesitate to pick up. It was Felix Grayson calling—his friend from the orphanage home. Felix had just won a contract, along with a promotion at work, and he needed all his friends to celebrate with him.“Hello, buddy!” a voice from the other end rang out.“Felix, how have you been?” Desmond asked.“Good. You?”“Good too.”The two friends exchanged greetings with soft chuckles, their smiles stretching wide. It felt like sunlight cutting through a long, cloudy day—warm and familiar after the silence.“I'll be throwing a party at VibeSquare Suites Hotel tomorrow. Who are you to think you can meet with the CEO?” she scoffed.“Okay, no problem. Let's wait and see if I can see her or not,” Desmond said, bringing out his phone. He dialed Nicholas's number immediately.“Hello. I need the CEO of House of Luxoria to return to her boutique now.
