Chapter 164
Winston's text arrived a little after ten on a Wednesday night. It had no greeting and no explanation, just an address on the far side of the river and a single line beneath it. Somewhere nobody knows either of us. Come alone if you can.The address turned out to be a twenty-four-hour laundromat squeezed between a closed pawnshop and a nail salon, its fluorescent lights buzzing over two rows of humming machines. An old man dozed in a plastic chair by the window. Otherwise there was only Winston, sitting at the far folding table in a hooded sweatshirt with a battered laptop open in front of him and a paper cup of vending machine coffee he hadn't touched. He didn't stand when Desmond came in. He just nodded at the chair across from him."Thanks for coming," he said quietly. "Sorry about the venue. My building's full of people from work.""Do what?"Winston glanced at the sleeping man by the window, then turned the laptop around."You know I've been doing scheduling at the depot," he sai
Chapter 163
The Lowell Biogenix gala was Jo's night, and Desmond had promised himself he would spend all of it standing in the background, holding her drink and smiling at people whose names he'd forget by morning. It was held in the glass atrium of the new research wing, a tall bright space with a view of the river, filled with doctors and donors and families who had come through the trial program. A string trio played near the windows. A banner over the stage read Expanding Access, and beneath it, on a long table, sat framed photographs of children who had been given slots over the past two years. Wren's was third from the left, gap-toothed and grinning under her fox blanket. She had chosen the photograph herself and insisted it be that one.Jo was radiant and busy, moving through the crowd in a dark green dress, shaking hands, remembering the names of every child on that table. Nobody outside the family knew yet about the baby. She was keeping the secret beautifully, and Desmond was keeping it

The photograph was terrible. That was the first thing Desmond noticed, and the thing he kept coming back to afterward, because a better photograph would have been easier to dismiss. It had been taken from a security camera mounted high on a warehouse wall, grainy and washed out, the timestamp burned into one corner. A container port at dusk, two states south. A gangway leading up the side of a rust-streaked cargo vessel. A man in a dark jacket and a plain grey cap halfway up it, one hand on the rail, his face turned slightly toward the camera as if he'd heard a sound behind him.Pike laid it on Gideon's desk without a word and stepped back."Where did this come from?" Desmond asked."A port security contractor we've kept on a retainer since the estate breach. They run every face that boards a foreign-flagged vessel through a list we gave them." Pike's voice was level, the way it always was when the news was bad. "Six days ago, this one came back at sixty-one percent.""Sixty-one perce
Chapter 161
Jo was already in the Lowell kitchen when Desmond came down at seven on Sunday morning, which wasn't unusual. What was unusual was that she wasn't doing anything. No coffee brewing, no oven argument waiting to happen, no list of who was bringing what. She was just standing at the counter in one of his old sweatshirts with her hands flat on the marble, as if she'd been waiting there a while."Morning," he said, reaching past her for the coffee tin. "Is Wren still asleep?""Dead to the world." Jo didn't move. "Desmond, sit down a second."He stopped with the tin in his hand. Over the last year he had learned what most of her voices meant, the boardroom voice, the voice for frightened parents, the voice she used on Della when Della was being impossible. He didn't recognize this one. He set the tin down and pulled out a stool.Jo reached into the pocket of the sweatshirt, took out a folded piece of paper, and slid it slowly across the counter until it stopped in front of him. She didn't s
Chapter 160
Vivienne Kestrel did not throw things. Desmond had known her for more than a year and had never once seen her raise her voice in anger, so when she came into the terminal office on Monday morning and dropped a tablet on the desk hard enough to rattle his coffee, he understood that something had gone very wrong."Calder Strait," she said. "Read it."He read it. A formal bid, filed with the port authority at six that morning, for exclusive operating rights on the Calder Strait corridor. The applicant was Tidewater Maritime."Eight months," Vivienne said. She hadn't sat down. "Eight months of negotiations, Desmond. Three trips to the port authority, two environmental reviews and a labor agreement I personally rewrote four times. We were three weeks from signing. And a company with a dozen secondhand ships just walked in the side door and put a number on the table that's eleven percent higher than ours.""Can they afford eleven percent?""That's the question, isn't it." Her jaw was tight.
Chapter 159
The invitation came by text on a Thursday, three lines and no fuss. Dinner Saturday, my place, nothing fancy. Bring Jo if she'll tolerate me. I make a decent risotto and a terrible dessert.Desmond read it twice, then showed it to Jo, half expecting her to find a reason to say no. She didn't. She only looked at the message a moment longer than it needed and said that she'd always wanted to meet a man who admitted his dessert was terrible. He hadn't told her about the page from Corvane still folded in his jacket pocket. He told himself that was because there was nothing yet to tell.-----Elliot Harrow lived on the waterfront, but not the part of it Desmond expected. There were no glass towers and no gated drive. It was a narrow brick house at the end of a working pier in the old north harbor, the kind of place a successful dock foreman might have bought thirty years ago, with a porch light that flickered and a doorbell that didn't work. Harrow opened the door before they could knock,
