Everyone else in the room gasped. The collective sound was so loud that it could be heard in the hallway.

Ronald's pen fell to the floor, and Stephanie's coffee cup rattled against its saucer. Abigail looked shocked but not too surprised.

She noticed this as she angrily stared at her stepdaughter. Something about Abigail's face suggested she'd known this was coming for a long time but said nothing.

"You all heard me correctly," Calvin said with a bolder and more confident tone.

"I'm leaving this company today. I'm starting my own label."

Calvin faced Nathan once again.

"I'm going to show you how to run a music business the right way. It will be just me, my agent, and my artists. There will be no army of uninspired writers or corporate handlers destroying ambition and creativity."

He dropped the grape-flavored candy on the table for Nathan before quickly picking up his briefcase, ready to leave.

"I'll teach you what real leadership looks like, and it will be much better than everything you've managed to accomplish in twenty years. So watch and learn, Mr. Harrington," Calvin said before briefly addressing everyone in the room.

"Good day, everyone."

And with that said, he walked toward the door. Hidden in the briefcase were unsigned contracts with three of Nathan's biggest stars printed on them.

The names were Jason McCallister, Gabriella Santos, and Marcus Thorne. These were the same artists that Nathan had dismissed as problems, and soon they would be Calvin's secret weapons against him.

He lost it at this point. Everyone in the room could see the veins bulging from Nathan's forehead like twisted ropes.

"Now listen to me, you pathetic excuse for a man! If you walk out that door, I will see to it that you never succeed in anything. I swear to God, I will destroy everything that gives meaning to your worthless existence!"

Calvin looked over his shoulder one last time. His gray eyes were calm, showing no expression.

But to Nathan, it showed that Calvin didn't see him as a threat. He was nothing more than a ranting old man who couldn't do anything, and it angered Nathan even more.

Then, without saying anything, the young man left the room and headed toward the elevator.

Abigail stood up. Her decision was already made.

"And where do you think you're going?" Nathan asked.

For the first time in years, she looked at her father. All the usual fear was gone, and Abigail looked like a completely different person.

"I'm going with my husband."

Just like Calvin, she wasn't making a blind decision. In her purse was a flash drive containing all the financial documents she and her husband had been compiling for months.

Abigail too had made arrangements with those she trusted. One of her friends was a reporter at Music Weekly ready to publish a Pulitzer contender based on all the information she and her husband had compiled.

Nathan nodded slowly.

"Of course you're leaving with your husband. But when everything falls apart and you come crawling back here begging for my forgiveness, don't say I never warned you. You've made too many stupid decisions in your life. Please don't let this be the one that makes me give up on you."

She surprised everyone by speaking up without a trace of uncertainty.

"Goodbye, father."

As the elevator door closed behind them, Calvin looked at his wife. He was a bit surprised she was there with him.

"You came along," Calvin said.

"What did you expect?" Abigail asked, looking at him with a slight hint of anger for doubting her loyalty.

He smiled as he pulled out another lollipop and handed it to her. This one was vanilla-flavored, her all-time favorite.

"This isn't going to be easy, you know. You've just made him your enemy, and he will do whatever it takes to destroy us."

Abigail unwrapped the candy and put it in her mouth.

"I know."

They both took a deep breath as the elevator doors slid open. The couple had just become enemies of the most powerful music empire in America.

But Nathan Harrington's empire was built on more than just recording contracts and radio deals. Hundreds of dead bodies lay buried beneath the foundation of his success, and lots of blood had been spilled to secure his throne.

And now, Calvin would learn exactly what happened to those who dared to challenge the king.

"Three more investors left your company today. Your stock dropped eight percent. Your artists are asking questions." "It's only temporary," Nathan said through his teeth. "We've discussed this already, haven't we?" Jonah took a long drag from the cigarette and blew smoke up. "While that might sound like an impressive excuse to you, the council doesn't think so. They think you're losing control, Nathan Harrington. They think... it's time for new leadership." "I built all this from nothing," Nathan said, gesturing at the building they were in and the Neo sign on their shirts. "I've made Neo more money than anyone in ten years. And you come here to talk to me about new leadership? Have you gone mad?" "Ten years, Nathan. Don't make a big deal out of it," Jonah said like he was intentionally trying to be offensive. "But what have you done this week?" One of the men stepped forward, cr

Nathan loosened his tie with one hand, phone pressed against his ear with the other as he walked down the hallway. "Mr. Peterson, I understand your concerns, but I promise you this is only temporary. Calvin Constantine's little stunt was nothing more than a social media charade. Rest assured, my team is handling it." He stopped at his bedroom door, listening to the investor's worried voice. "No sir, there is no need to worry. Your investment is safe. In fact, I think we'll see better returns once all this dies down. We both know the music industry loves a comeback story. That's the only reason Calvin Constantine is everywhere on the news right now." Nathan pushed open his bedroom door. Stephanie was already asleep. "Don't worry, sir. I assure you that by next quarter, all investors in my company see why Harrington Music Group has been the most profitable label for ten years. Trust me, Mr. Peterson. Have I eve

"Where do you live?" he asked. "I live in Brentwood," she said. "But Jason..." "Yes?" he said. "I meant what I said back then. When we talked on set, I thought you were just another angry celebrity having a bone to pick with the world. But the way you handled tonight was beyond me." Jason shook his head. "Stop making a big deal out of it. Anyone with a level head would have done the same thing, if not better." Nina gently bit her lower lip, still staring at Jason's face. Jason glanced at her for a while before keeping his eyes back on the road. Without her quick wits, intellect and charm, Nina Gilbert was just a young woman who just experienced a difficult night. "If you are still thinking about that envelope, then stop. It doesn't matter." "Well, thank goodness one of the paramedics brought it along. It is an apology letter from Calvin, along with some lega

Before they started their rapid-fire questions, Jason ordered the staff present to clear a path. As they did, two paramedics rushed in with their medical equipment. Jason slowly moved aside as they took over. One of the paramedics looked at him, and before she could ask anything, Jason gave the full report. "An allergic reaction to sulfates in wine. Difficulty breathing, flushing and throat constriction." The lead paramedic nodded as she briefly turned to Nina. "Are you her boyfriend?" asked the lead paramedic while preparing an injection. Jason hesitated for a moment. "He's with me," Nina said between difficult breaths. The paramedic nodded as she injected the drug. Within two minutes, Nina was breathing properly again. The panicked look in her eyes was gone, and she could see Jason staying close. "Are you feeling better?" Nina nodded. "Pretty much, yeah," she said with her voice still raspy. "While that's a good sign, we still need to take her to the hospital for f

While Jason was stuck in his thoughts, Nina raised her glass with a playful smile that made the knot in his stomach feel even more painful. "Here's to enjoying a year of being stuck with me." Jason didn't raise his glass, wondering why she was raising hers after already drinking from it. "Can't contain the excitement," he said before cutting into his food. "Has any of your girlfriends ever told you how cute you are when you sulk?" Then she took another sip of the drink. "I'm sure you were the spoiled type who whined and cried whenever things didn't go your way." Jason shook his head, stabbing his food like he was imagining the meal as Nina. "Have you met my mother before?" The woman took a final sip from the cup before answering. "God, this is so good," she whispered to herself in a way that was loud enough for Jason to hear. "Probably not," she answered Jason. "But I know you kissed my hand even when you couldn't stand being around me. I love the way you opened
