CHAPTER EIGHT

Aleric turned at once, but he seemed to be already too late, his eyes meeting the sight of the beast that had already charged at him from behind, throwing him off balance.

Aleric grunted, rolling down the hill with every effort to hold onto something proving to be very futile.

The beast followed, its desire to make him pay for killing one of them.

With a threatening roar, it ran down the hill, eyes burning with rage as it showcased its fangs that were like katana blades, ready to grind Aleric’s bones between them.

Aleric’s companions were frightened to their teeth, and it was only Gareth who was bold enough to go a little bit closer.

Every other person seemed to be scared, standing frozen while they turned their heads from one angle to the other, holding onto their weapons that seemed to be in a hurry to slip through their fingers.

Aleric hit his head hard on the tough floor, and the moment he opened his eyes, he saw the beast speeding down at him, fangs sharp and eyes red with fury.

“What the hell is that ugly creature?” He muttered, eyes wide with shock.

He had never seen anything like that before, and no one has.

The beast looked like a lion from one view, then it looked like a big bat from another angle.

Its body already looked tough even without being seen, and with a speed like that, Aleric’s heart sank deeper into his stomach, and he was prompted to stagger backward.

But looking backward, he realized that he had gotten to a dead end, and there was no room to run.

So he stood his ground, taking a deep breath while he held strongly to his weapon.

“You can do this, Aleric…” He attempted to encourage himself, but the sight of the monster getting closer with quaking thuds made him swallow hard.

“Sworne!”   Gareth’s voice called out to him from above, causing him to look up for only a second, reminded that danger was still lurking in front of him.

“What are you doing?! Run for your life!” Gareth was already making gestures to him, but it was already too late.

“Let him die if he wants to…” Brock sneered, snorting as he looked down toward where Aleric was standing.

“Somehow, he thinks he is better than the rest of us. He will suffer for this…” He added, causing Gareth to shake his head.

But the latter chose to ignore him and his cohorts who were looking forward to being entertained and were not looking down the hill because they cared about Aleric.

“You can’t fight that thing, Aleric! Make a run for it! This way!” Gareth pointed, to the space he thought he had seen, but it seemed as though Aleric’s mind was made up to fight the beast and to defeat it at all costs.

Gareth grunted, worried and annoyed at the same time.

“He is going to get himself killed…” He muttered, taking a deep breath.

Meanwhile, Aleric had suddenly begun to deal with the feeling that he may have made a terrible mistake by not running for his life.

When the beast got closer, it suddenly occurred to him that it was bigger than any other beast that had attacked them.

He swallowed hard, eyes wide and glittering with shock.

“What have I done…” He muttered, his voice slippery and cracked.

“Maybe I should have listened to Gareth…” He thought to himself, but before he could process it, the beast had roared, reminding him that they had a score to settle.

Aleric looked it in the eyes, and what he could see was undeniable.

It was rage. It was a vendetta!

It was the furious hunger to break him into several pieces and scatter his bones all over the place.

The beast roared again, and then it started moving slowly, growling with eyes still flaming like magma.

Aleric took a deep breath, and then he began to move slowly as well, attempting to read the movement of the beast.

But he couldn’t, not when the creature was moving in circles, placing one huge leg in front of the other, and still snarling at him.

“What are you up to?” Aleric muttered, and the monster decided to show him since it couldn’t speak.

Without warning, the beast opened wide its mouth, and a splash of fire followed, targeted at Aleric.

Luckily, Aleric was able to elude the lava, rolling down to the right and still battling to hold onto something again.

When he eventually got up, he cared less about the dirt all over him, turning to look at the trees that had been razed by the lava from the beast’s mouth.

“I will be damned!” He whispered loudly, forcing saliva down his throat.

Tasks needed prioritizing based on urgency; having received the order for pineapple jam, Cheng Su advanced the jam-making schedule at a brisk pace.Hence, she left the house early in the morning without even time for breakfast."Yo, Sister-in-law, heading out so early, where are you off to?" At the bus station, she bumped into Hualing who was waiting for the shuttle bus."Got some things to handle," Cheng Su smiled lightly. "You’re out early too, huh?""What can I do? The hospital is a big unit, and we nurses are considered public servants. Work starts early; not like you, Sister-in-law Qi, who’s got plenty of free time," Hualing chuckled. Her words were both a self-boost and a subtle dig at Cheng Su.Cheng Su could hear the insinuation but responded with nothing more than an indifferent smile. So you think you’re great because you’re a nurse? Cheng Su wasn’t about to argue with Hualing over who was winning or losing, better to save her breath.Seeing Cheng Su’s reaction, Hualing felt

Cheng Su, however, was oblivious to the jealousy she was inspiring in people; she was busy tidying up."I’ve long heard that Platoon Leader Chen’s wife comes from a high background, they all say he’s quite lucky, but now I see she has quite the temper," Taiguo sat on a stool, looking for a topic of conversation.Cheng Su, who was wiping the table with a rag, responded, "Everyone is born of a mother and father, who doesn’t have a temper? Like you said, she’s a college student, so naturally, she’s a bit prouder.""I think her temper isn’t as good as yours!" Taiguo blurted out unexpectedly.Cheng Su paused in her wiping, looked at him sidelong, and said with a half-smile, "Oh my, is our Commander Qi having sweet soup today? Is that why you’re so sweet?"Taiguo was also taken aback by his own outburst, and when he heard Cheng Su’s sarcastic comment, he immediately frowned: "You can’t be complimented, can you? As soon as someone praises you, you don’t let them off the hook and refuse to ad

Hualing returned home and sat on the stool, stifling her frustration. Why? It was all because she had visited Cheng Su’s place. While at Qi Taiguo’s home, she took the opportunity to look around inside and out while Cheng Su was busy in the kitchen. She deeply felt that her own home was practically a pigeon coop in comparison.Qi Taiguo, being of higher rank, was allotted a two-bedroom apartment with a living room and a bathroom. In contrast, all they had was a one-bedroom apartment without a bathroom, requiring them to use a communal one. How was that convenient? It’s human nature to fear comparison. Without it, Hualing might have been content, but now she couldn’t keep her calm. Her anger grew upon seeing the dishes served on the dining table.Cheng Su was just a country girl from the sticks, yet she was fortunate enough to marry a good husband with a high rank, leading to better living conditions than theirs.Look at their place—in this sweltering heat, the fan spun, cool and refre

Qi Taiguo was bubbling with enthusiasm, and Platoon Leader Chen, unable to decline and noticing the worn-out look on his wife’s face, reluctantly turned to Cheng Su and said, "Then we’ll have to trouble you, sister-in-law. Once our place is set up, we’ll treat you to a warm pot meal and return the hospitality.""What trouble is it?" Qi Taiguo spoke for Cheng Su with a smile, then turned to instruct her, "Do we still have any peanuts at home? Fry a plate for me and Platoon Leader Chen to have a few drinks.""No need, no need, just a few bites of rice will do," Platoon Leader Chen said, waving his hands repeatedly.Cheng Su, smiling, went to get busy; turning around, she muttered to herself, "Mr. Qi can really work someone to death with just one sentence. This is so sudden; while the dishes aren’t a problem since I’ve bought some meat and vegetables, where can I find extra rice in such short notice?"Only noodles will do!To celebrate securing her first order in this new era of her life

CHAPTER NINETY-EIGHTThe words the old man said meant nothing to everyone around him, including his family who were so disappointed in him, and kept their eyes on him even while they were being taken away at the General’s command.“I am sorry.” Elder Clagmor mouthed to his wife who shook her head as one of the soldiers dragged her away while she kept her eyes on him. His daughter was too ashamed to look at his face, and she was eager to leave the palace more than her mother.“You see what you have brought upon yourself, Elder Clagmor. Now your family detests you for the evil you have done to the king, for the darkness you have brought upon the Kingdom. You sacrificed the peace and harmony of this kingdom for the sake of something little, old man. You are unworthy of a second chance.”General Morbius paused for a while, allowing the old men to reflect on his actions before he continued when he was convinced that he was regretful of his actions.“Elder Clagmor?” He called out to him wit

CHAPTER NINETY-SEVENHis response made the General grunt in anger, but he managed to remain calm even though he felt like throwing a punch to his face.“You are not a very good liar, Elder Clagmor. Your lips say one thing, but your eyes say another. You cannot lie to me, old man. It is clearly visible that you are lying, and I can see that. You need to speak the truth or I will be forced to make you.”“But I am saying the truth, General! I know nothing about the cure for the King’s condition! I was only asked to make the poison from the things Lord Thorne handed over to me, and he gave me instructions on how to give them to him.”“I see.” General Morbius nodded with a smirk on his face, while he stared at the old man who was hoping that he was able to convince him that he was telling the truth even though he was wary of the fact that he didn’t believe him.General Morbius chuckled softly, and then he nodded without letting go of the smile on his face. At that moment, the old man had b
