Camille’s hand dropped, her face paling. The sirens grew louder, approaching fast, their red and blue lights painting frantic patterns across the alley walls. Her eyes, usually so guarded, filled with unshed tears, reflecting the emergency vehicles. Alejandro, however, merely blinked at her, his head tilted in genuine confusion.

"Look, I'm really sorry if I'm being rude," Alejandro said, his voice flat, devoid of the teasing spark she’d come to know. He gestured vaguely at the smoke still rising from the street, and the lingering smell of ozone. "But I think I just fought a… well, I don’t know what that was. A bad day? And my head feels like someone replaced my brain with lukewarm oatmeal. So, again, do I know you?"

Camille felt a sharp, icy pang in her chest, a pain far deeper than any physical wound. She took a shaky breath, forcing the emotion down. "Alejandro, it's me. Camille. We've been through a lot. A lot of collapsing buildings, a few assassins, an exploding grocery store... I even called you an idiot like, five minutes ago."

He frowned, then snapped his fingers. "Oh! Right! The grocery store! Did it, uh, make it?" He peered over her shoulder, trying to see past the alley entrance. "Because I had a really good artisanal cheese supplier finally agreeing to stock my shop. That would be a shame."

Camille closed her eyes for a fleeting second. This was worse than she thought. "No, Alejandro. Your shop did not make it. It imploded. We escaped barely. With my help. And before that, we were in a giant, sentient library that wanted to eat us. And before that, you were trying to ask Isabella on a date. Remember Isabella? The bookstore owner?"

He thought for a moment, his brow furrowed in concentration. "Isabella… the name sounds familiar. Is she the one who owes me money for some artisanal cheese? I feel like there's a recurring cheese theme in my life."

Camille let out a frustrated growl, running a hand through her already messy hair. "No! Isabella is your crush! You almost died trying to save her! You were literally going to ask her for coffee!"

"Well, that sounds like a terrible pickup line," Alejandro mused, rubbing his chin. "Imagine: 'Hey, I just almost died for you, want coffee?' I'd probably get slapped."

"You are going to get slapped if you don't remember something, anything!" Camille hissed, grabbing his shoulders. Her gaze was desperate, pleading. "We’ve been fighting side-by-side for days! I’ve watched you die seventeen times, for crying out loud! You can't just forget me, Alejandro!"

He blinked, suddenly serious. His eyes, though still unfocused, held a glimmer of something curious. "Seventeen times? That sounds exhausting. And highly inefficient. Are you some kind of... time traveler? Because I’m pretty sure I'm new to this whole 'supernatural weirdness' thing."

"I'm your designated, very annoyed, partner in reality-bending crime!" she exclaimed, shaking him slightly. "The System is taking your memories to empower your abilities. It's draining you dry! If you keep forgetting, you'll be an empty husk, a puppet for whoever created this whole mess!"

"A puppet, huh?" Alejandro considered this, then looked around the grimy alley. "Well, at least it's better than being a grocery clerk who can't remember his dog's name. Which, coincidentally, I still can't. Was it... Barky? No, that sounds too generic."

Camille groaned. "It was Lobo! Your dog was Lobo! You loved that dog! We talked about it like five minutes ago!"

"I did?" He looked genuinely confused. "Man, this whole 'memory loss' thing is really throwing a wrench into my ability to have coherent conversations." He paused, then looked at her with a flicker of something new in his eyes. "You seem genuinely distressed by my predicament. That's... nice. Most people just assume I've had too much espresso."

A faint, almost imperceptible warmth spread through Camille. "Nice? Alejandro, I am currently attempting to prevent your mind from being completely wiped. 'Nice' is not the word I would use." She sighed, defeated. "We don't have time for a full-on memory recovery session. The Archon has the missing page, and if he's opening a 'vault,' we need to know what's inside. And for that, we need information. There's a gala tonight. High society. The kind of place where people whisper secrets about ancient artifacts over overpriced canapés."

"A gala?" Alejandro’s eyes widened. "Like, fancy clothes, champagne, tiny shrimp? I haven’t been to a gala since... well, I've never been to a gala. I sell beans. What would I even wear? And how would we get in? Do I just tell them I'm the guy who killed a street monster?"

"No, you idiot," Camille said, a wry smile playing on her lips despite her desperation. "You're going to be my boyfriend."

Alejandro stared at her. "Your... what now?"

"My extremely charming, mysteriously wealthy, and slightly eccentric boyfriend," she elaborated, already pulling him towards a less conspicuous street. "We're going as 'power couple on the rise.' It's the perfect cover. Nobody looks too closely at people who act like they own the room. And with your disoriented charm, you'll be believable."

"Disoriented charm? I think that's just called being confused," Alejandro muttered, but a strange warmth bloomed in his chest at the idea of being her 'boyfriend,' even a fake one. "Okay, but if I'm your fake boyfriend, do I at least get to hold your hand? For... authenticity, of course."

Camille rolled her eyes, but her cheeks flushed a faint pink. "For authenticity. Fine. Now, let's go get you something that doesn't smell like cockroach and despair."

Hours later, Alejandro stared at himself in the mirror of a ridiculously upscale boutique dressing room. He was wearing a tailored charcoal suit that felt like a second skin, a crisp white shirt, and a dark tie. He looked… good. Alarmingly good. He felt like a movie star who'd accidentally wandered onto the wrong set.

"Alright, 'Mister Mysterious Wealthy Boyfriend,' ready to charm the pants off some magical elite?" Camille quipped, leaning against the doorframe, looking stunning in a shimmering emerald gown that hugged her figure perfectly. She looked less like an assassin and more like a queen.

Alejandro felt his breath catch. "Wow," he whispered, a genuine admiration in his voice. "You look... incredible. Like you could stop traffic and start a small war, all at the same time."

Camille smirked, a genuine flash of amusement in her eyes. "Why, thank you. You clean up nicely too, for someone who recently turned his store into a black hole." She walked over, smoothing out his lapel. Her fingers brushed his chest, sending a jolt through him. "Remember the plan: look important, act bored, and let me do all the talking. Unless you spot something suspicious. Then, just give me a look."

"What kind of look?" he asked, trying to ignore the lingering warmth from her touch. "Like, 'I just saw a ghost' look? Or 'I desperately need more of those tiny shrimp' look?"

"Just... the look," she sighed, a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "You'll know it when you see it." She then took his arm, her touch sending another jolt through him. "Ready, partner?"

The gala was a whirlwind of flashing lights, orchestral music, and the clinking of champagne flutes. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and murmured conversations. Alejandro, playing his role of 'disoriented charming boyfriend,' found it surprisingly easy. He mostly just smiled vaguely, nodded, and tried to identify the tiny shrimp.

"Wow, this is intense," Alejandro whispered to Camille, leaning close as they navigated a throng of impeccably dressed guests. "I think I just saw a guy casually floating three inches off the ground. Should I be concerned?"

Camille didn't miss a beat. "Just smile and nod, darling. He’s probably just showing off his new anti-gravity shoes. Very gauche." She subtly pointed with her chin towards a group by a towering ice sculpture. "Over there. Lady Cordelia. She traffics in ancient texts. She might know about your father’s 'vault.'"

As they approached, Alejandro caught snatches of conversation—whispers of 'ancient powers,' 'unstable reality,' and 'the Velez lineage.' His name. It echoed in the elegant hall, chilling him.

"Good evening, Lady Cordelia," Camille said, her voice smooth as silk, her hand tightening subtly on Alejandro's arm. "So delighted to see you. You remember my… partner, Alejandro."

Lady Cordelia, a woman with eyes that seemed to hold centuries of secrets, appraised Alejandro with a piercing gaze. "Ah, the new blood. Charming. I'd heard whispers. Your father was a peculiar man, young Alejandro. A collector of… dangerous curiosities."

Alejandro offered his best vague, charming smile. "Indeed. He always did have a penchant for the dramatic. But I'm more of a simple grocery store owner, myself."

Lady Cordelia chuckled, a dry, rustling sound. "Are you, now? Pity. The world needs fewer grocers and more Wardens these days. Especially with the whispers of the Anti-Contractor movement gaining traction."

Camille shifted, her grip on Alejandro’s arm warningly tight. "The Anti-Contractors are merely a fringe group of conspiracy theorists, Lady Cordelia. No one takes them seriously."

"Oh, but they should," Cordelia replied, her eyes narrowing. "They speak of a coming 'Erasure.' A purge of all who touch the System. And they have a rather influential backer, I hear. Someone connected to a failed corporate acquisition, perhaps?" She glanced pointedly across the room.

Alejandro followed her gaze. His blood ran cold. Standing by the champagne fountain, looking far too comfortable for a man who had nearly gone to prison, was Tomás. But he wasn't alone. He was deep in conversation with a cloaked figure whose face was obscured by shadow, even in the brightly lit room. The same shadowy figure who had collapsed his shop. The Archon.

"Tomás?" Alejandro whispered, feeling a surge of pure, unadulterated rage.

Camille’s face tightened. "He's working with the Archon. He's not just embezzling; he's orchestrating a reality-wide takeover."

Just then, Tomás looked up, his eyes locking onto Alejandro. A cruel, knowing smile spread across his face. He said something to the Archon, who turned slowly, his features still indistinct, but his gaze felt like a physical weight.

The System screamed in Alejandro’s mind, not with alerts, but with a sudden, overwhelming surge of memory. Not his own, but a vivid, emotional flashback. He saw Camille, her hair loose, laughing in the soft glow of a hidden cafe, her hand tracing patterns on his arm. He saw himself, holding her close under a blanket of stars, whispering promises. He felt the warmth of her lips, the taste of jasmine and ozone. He saw a shared future, filled with quiet moments and fierce protection. He remembered falling deeply, irrevocably in love with her.

His eyes snapped back to Camille, wide with dawning realization and a profound sense of connection. He saw the unshed tears in her eyes, the desperation that had been masked by professional detachment.

"Camille," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I... I remember. I remember us." He squeezed her hand, a powerful, protective instinct rising within him. "I remember falling in love with you."

Her breath hitched, her eyes widening, a mixture of disbelief and heartbreaking longing in their depths. "Alejandro, no, that's..."

Before she could finish, the Archon lifted a hand. A ripple of distorted energy emanated from him, washing over the gala. The opulent room flickered, the music stuttered, and the faces of the guests began to blur, their forms flickering like bad holograms.

Alejandro felt the System ping, a chilling, new message overriding his manufactured memory.

[ WARNING: CONTRACTOR PURGE PROTOCOL INITIATED. ]

[ ALL CONTRACTORS: TARGETED FOR ERASURE. ]

[ YOUR MANUFACTURED MEMORY: A SYSTEM INITIATED REWARD FOR CONSISTENT HOST ENGAGEMENT. ]*

The realization hit Alejandro like a physical blow. The memory, the emotion, the love – it wasn't real. It was a lie. A trick. He was still just a puppet.

"It's a trap, Camille!" he yelled, just as the Archon smiled, a chilling, triumphant grin finally visible on his shadowy face. "It was never real!"

But it was too late. The entire gala hall began to dissolve into static, and the shadowy Archon, with Tomás by his side, stepped forward, his hand outstretched, preparing to erase them all.

Can't we just, I don't know, hit 'undo'?"Camille shook her head frantically, her eyes wide with a terror that mirrored his own. "There is no undo! The Master Contract is activating! Around them, the shop groaned, the very fabric of reality twisting like a wet rag. Shelves buckled, floorboards warped, and the air shimmered, the smell of burnt sugar and old paper replaced by the acrid tang of ozone.Alejandro spun, his mind reeling. "Who the hell are you? What have you done to my shop?"Camille, her face pale, lunged past him. "We have to go! He's not here to fight, he's here to destabilize!"
