Everyone went quiet the moment E7 raised his voice. All attention in the room locked on him. Something big was coming.

"Don't act surprised!" shouted the man with a crooked smile, arms wide open like he was welcoming them to a twisted party. "You all know why you're here. Human trash... You were given one last chance to escape death."

Jasper swallowed hard. His eyes scanned the other inmates in green. He was surrounded by criminals. He didn't know what was coming, but one thing was clear: if he wanted to improve, he had to survive.

"Today, Agent ICE's squad brought in something special," E7 continued, pacing back and forth with manic energy. "An XCP… something different. A beast. One that cost us blood and lives."

His voice grew louder, the tension thickening like a storm about to break. Then he held up one finger.

"One. I want you to figure out what its ability is."

A second finger went up, that manic grin never leaving his face.

"Two. Find out if it has any weaknesses. Or if it even eats."

Then the third finger, his eyes wild.

"Three… I want you to find out how to kill it."

A chill ran down Jasper's spine. E7 had said it like it was some kind of game.

"If you complete those three tasks, your sentence drops from death to twenty years. Unless, of course, you'd prefer to stay my lab rats."

One inmate shakily raised a hand, voice cracking.

"And… what if we can't kill it? What if we don't figure out its ability?"

E7 looked at him like he was a talking insect.

"Can't kill it? Can't figure it out?" he repeated, stepping slowly toward the man. "Then you're useless to me."

He stopped in front of him and leaned in. His gaze was pure emptiness.

"And if you're useless to me… I'll make sure I end you myself."

Another inmate tried to chime in. "What if none of us make it? What if we all die?"

E7 spun around, amused like a child with a toy.

"Then it'll be the perfect day to feed the beast."

The atmosphere dropped a few degrees. Noticing it, E7 kept going.

"Of course, I'm not that heartless. If we see you've done enough research, we might let you out early. That said—"

He snapped his fingers.

A pulse of purple light burst from the center of the room, vibrating like a heartbeat. A circle appeared on the floor, glowing with a symbol: a stylized, distorted eye.

At the same time, each inmate's suit emitted a flash on the right hand. Jasper looked down: the number 52 glowed on his glove.

"Let's begin," E7 said. "That number's to ID you… in case someone gets eaten."

He turned to the glowing seal and raised both arms.

"Step into the circle."

Jasper hesitated, then followed the others. Some looked terrified. Others acted like this was just another day.

When they were all inside the circle, E7 snapped his fingers again.

A dry boom—like thunder held back—swallowed them whole.

The world shifted.

They weren't in the room anymore. Thick, humid heat surrounded them. The ground beneath their feet was rocky and wet. A cave—but not just any cave.

The walls were breathing.

Literally. Expanding and contracting like a massive, slow lung.

Jasper stumbled, nauseous.

("This isn't like the teleporter at the base… this is something else. Like magic.") he thought, forcing himself to stand.

"What the hell was that?!" one inmate shouted, falling to the ground.

Another started laughing like a lunatic. "We're alive! Fuck yeah! Let's go hunt that monster!"

"Who made this idiot our leader?" mocked someone from the back.

Before things could get worse, a buzzing sound echoed inside their heads.

["Well, well… I like that energy. That's what I want to hear."]

It was E7's voice. But it wasn't coming from anywhere. It was inside them.

["We've given you some tools: each of you has a short-range and long-range weapon, some healing supplies, and we'll drop food pills daily."]

Suddenly, Jasper's left hand began to glow. A panel opened on his skin, showing various options.

["Now then, human scum… prove your worth."]

Silence fell. Tense. Like a thread about to snap.

"Shit, it's a gun!" shouted one guy, grinning.

Another pulled out a sword, eyes wild, holding it up like a trophy.

"This beauty reminds me of when I slit that cop's throat!" he cackled.

Jasper said nothing.

("I'm surrounded by psychos. And not the fun kind.")

A scarred man stepped forward, removing his helmet. He was tall, his face marked by battles.

"Enough talk. If that thing's out there, we kill it before it kills us."

He spat on the ground and started walking. No one stopped him. Some followed out of fear. Others, just to not be left behind.

Jasper was the last to move, feeling the weight of death hanging over him like a rusted chandelier.

***

"Come on, man. We're professionals. All we gotta do is find that thing and slice it up," said the guy with the sword, spinning it with confidence.

"Professionals, my ass. We don't even know what the hell this is. A fucking breathing cave? This is some freak show," muttered another, clearly unsettled.

Jasper stayed silent. Every step seemed to echo too loud, like the cave itself was listening.

("This is strange... The XCP hasn't shown up. We've been walking for minutes now and still nothing.") He scanned the darkness with his suit's night vision. They weren't supposed to be caught off guard.

"Maybe the monster's scared of us," joked the same loudmouth. "This'll be a walk in the park. I'll be out in no time."

Jasper's brows furrowed.

("No. Something's off. If the ICE squad struggled to capture it... it can't be passive. This place is its den.")

His gaze locked on the cave walls. They were still.

Too still.

("Wait… since when did they stop breathing?")

He stepped forward, tension crawling up his spine. A section of the wall... was vibrating.

Something was behind it.

"Get back!" Jasper shouted, the only one who noticed.

"What now? You scared?" mocked the scarred man at the front—right before the wall split open.

A dark claw shot out and grabbed him by the chest.

"What the—"

He didn't get to finish. The wall swallowed him whole, vanishing like it had never been there.

"RUN!" Jasper shouted, and this time, no one mocked him.

They bolted in all directions.

The XCP was never hiding.

It was waiting.

All the people in the bar looked at Jasper with caution; they didn’t like the challenge.“A duel of fire shots? You must be the copier Lidia told me about,” Felix said as he downed a shot of tequila.“Well then, let’s do it. Dawn is close—how about you sit down and have a drink?” said the wide-brimmed-hat man as he threw a chair at Jasper.Jasper, in response, simply looked at it and then refocused his gaze on the other sheriff in the place. His expression made everything clear.“Hey! Have you lost your mind?” Lidia finally shouted.“It’s obvious this is just a way to buy time. They’re surely going to bring all their XCP-hunter companions and hunt everyone down.”“Hey, if we had wanted to call for backup, we would have already done it, Miss Ice, don’t you think?” I18 said mockingly.“They’re right about that, Lidia. If this organization is like White Skull said, I don’t see the need for them to come back, much less for a duel,” one of the inhabitants commented calmly.“But no, there a

The sounds of impacts followed immediately.Bam!"Ash, Neo 7, I told you to do it properly!" Slavik complained after crashing into a painting."At least you hit the wall..." Lin commented; he had crashed into a table."Did you copy Neo 8’s ability? Good idea, Neo 7," F16 said as he got back on his feet."Yes, although I don’t fully control it yet. It was something I came up with on the spot. The plan itself was pretty simple," Jasper began to explain."We had a confrontation with an XCP with ice-based abilities in Gallows Creek. We managed to escape thanks to Neo 8, but we couldn’t afford to take that risk again.""So I asked her to explain her ability to me. Her explanation was hard to follow, but I understood the core of it: her power is a distortion of reality based on the meaning she assigns to the words

All the inhabitants aimed their weapons at the Neo X group.“Great, now we’re surrounded. Where are Snow and Slavik? We need them,” Suse said, looking around cautiously.“We don’t have time to call them, Neo 4. I can endure the pain from the shot,” F16 commented, looking at Felix.“Take care of them. I’ll keep an eye on the lord of flames,” F16 ordered as he pulled the bullet out of his shoulder.“You didn’t need to tell me, I was already planning to. Give me three seconds.” Suse stepped forward, her shining katana dazzling.“Die!” the creature said as it fired.Bam!As soon as she heard the shot, Suse changed the number in her eyes from 44 to 100, slicing the bullet in half with her katana. The girl didn’t waste time and began to accelerate, shifting the frames from 100 to 150.“One second,” the girl thought, starting to cut down several of those who were supposed to be the inhabitants of Gallows Creek.“Two seconds.”She moved to the left, taking down three more opponents in an insta

People were watching the scene, but no one was scared—it was as if they didn’t care.“If you’re revealing yourself, that means you plan to turn yourself in, right?” F16 asked, taking another sip of his cocktail.“Hey, I’m the justice around here. That’s supposed to be my line,” the sheriff replied sarcastically.“But I got tired of leaving behind charred corpses. This time, I want to talk to you. Even if I kill you, they’ll just send another group, and it’ll be the same hassle.”F16 noticed he wasn’t lying. He finished his drink, stood up, and left a few coins on the table.“Let’s talk outside then,” he said as he walked out.The man with the wide-brimmed hat smiled broadly as he followed him.“That’s what I like to see. I knew I could reason with you.”Suse and Lin decided to follow them. If things went well, the XCP might sur

Neo 8’s body didn’t take long to completely collapse onto the ground. Along with her, the bubble finally shattered like broken glass, dissolving into fragments of energy that faded in the air.Jasper stared at the scene, stunned. His mind had gone blank; he still wasn’t used to this. To the idea of losing someone like that.“Bam!”Seizing the opportunity, Lidia fired at him, ready to add another Neo X to her list of corpses.“Hey, asshole, focus!” Slavik shouted, deflecting the attack with his gloves.“Look, we can cry and feel bad for the kid later, but we won’t be able to do that if we’re dead. Do you understand?” Slavik said coldly.Jasper clenched his teeth in rage as he forced himself to regain his composure.“I’m going to kill you, you bitch!” he shouted, pointing at Lidia.“I must admit, out of everyone they’ve sent, you’re the most entertaining,” the sheriff mocked, finally putting some distance between them.“Jasper, we’ll have to retreat. We had no information on this enemy.

"I can't believe they sent a bunch of kids to capture us. Ha, they really are desperate," Lidia mocked the group. The skin on her face began to deform as her nails took on a strange blue color. In just a few seconds, her face was nothing more than a skull from which an unusual and striking blue hair sprouted, which she wore as if it were real hair."Kids? I hope you regret those words," Slavik replied in an arrogant tone.He lunged at the woman with agility, and in response, she pulled a shotgun from her belt. The weapon had already been modified—parts of ice covered the barrel."Bam!""Bam!""Bam!"Three shots were fired in the direction of Neo 6, who, standing just a few meters in front of Lidia, spun his electric staff to defend himself, barely managing to deflect each bullet.Without giving her time for another round, Slavik closed the distance and swung his weapon at Lidia. She tried to block the blow with her arms, jumping backward and sliding across the frozen ground."Shit, hey
