Chapter 1: XCPs don't exist
"Agent 7000, get ready."
"Yes, Miss V8, we've got it." At the Blue Fire food stand, just like every day, the regular customers were enjoying the delicious food. Nothing unusual was supposed to be happening. "She's moving, ma'am, she's going to escape," said a man in a strange white suit. The initials XCP-Association were clearly visible. "Damn it, don't let her escape. Start the attack and protect everyone," ordered a woman climbing down from a tree. One of the men in strange clothing approached the food stand at high speed while pulling out a kind of electric baton. Everyone looked at him in fear, and the fear grew even greater when the man raised the weapon and pointed it at someone's plate of food. "Hey, I'm sorry, help!" cried the owner of the plate desperately. Clack! The man ignored the woman's cries and still struck, and to everyone's surprise, a large eye was on the plate. "Now!" shouted the man in strange clothing, and seconds later, the woman and several people dressed alike appeared on the scene. "Activating sonifer," said one of the members, throwing a smoke bomb into the air. Her companions put on masks as they watched the customers fall asleep. The one-eyed creature shot out, revealing its true form. A kind of viscous mass full of eyes, an XCP. "Okay, guys, you know what to do," said the woman in charge, pulling out her weapon. Her companions followed her order and went straight for the monster. SCP-Association. Secure. The monster tried to escape but was hit, blocking its exit. Contain. The monster shot several beams from its eyes, but another agent blocked it and launched a counterattack. Protect. With no other option, the monster tried to escape through the center, but the woman in charge intercepted it with a pistol. Oh, right, now there's something else. XCP is the new name. Bang! The shot rang out instantly, leaving the monster lifeless. X- Eliminate.*** "Fuck, I fell asleep playing video games again..." Through the halls of Blue Petals High School, walked a slim, brown-eyed, somewhat tall boy. Although he's actually 5'7", when he introduces himself to girls he likes to say he's a little taller. After all, how much damage can a little lie do? "Good morning..." With a visibly tired face, the boy arrives at his classroom. "Oh, if it isn't Snow. Running late again. Was that last video game that came out yesterday fun, wasn't it?" Without a doubt, his most characteristic feature was his peculiar hair as white as snow. Not even his own parents know how he acquired it; according to the doctors it was an anomaly out of the ordinary. Because of that peculiarity, some of his classmates often call him Snow, even though that is not his real name. "Actually yes, yesterday I raised my character to level 50, I even got a rare item," mocking the professor, the boy sits down, but not before leaving his notebook on the desk. Professor William, used to this routine, took the notebook to check it, not being able to avoid forming a smile at the corner of his lips. "And again, the best assignment of all. I'm still amazed that you're so smart despite playing so many video games," William said, tossing the notebook to the boy, who caught it without any trouble. "Come on, Professor, that's why Jasper is so smart. Science approves of video games as a learning system. Besides, they say it serves as practice for what to do in case you encounter an XCP," said Michael, the classmate sitting behind Jasper, and one of the few to call him by his real name. But Professor William made a disapproving expression and then replied: "Come on, Michael, don't make excuses to justify Snow. Video games are a waste of time. Besides, I thought I already told you in another class that XCPs don't exist, that's just an invention of the internet." "There I agree with the vegestorium, Michael. I thought you were already bored with that XCPs thing, it's bullshit," Jasper supported in a nonchalant tone. Everyone knows he's a person who has a hard time believing in things he can't see. "Oh come on, Snow, don't be like that, didn't you see what happened at the Blue Fire food stand yesterday?" Laura, the classmate sitting next to Jasper, began to speak. "They're known for their cleanliness ethic, but yesterday everyone, including customers and workers, got sick...and none of them remember what happened or what they ate! It has to be the work of..." "And you have proof that it was an XCP?" interrupted Jasper casually. Laura, clearly embarrassed, fell silent and ducked her head. "Exactly. Why has there never been a single image of those silly creatures called XCPs? And in case there is a group to deal with them, why do they keep it a secret? What would they gain by doing so? Better leave it as fantasy and let's get back to class." With those words, Professor William continued with his lesson.*** "Come on, is that all you got, Chris? I thought you had practiced." After classes were over, the room was in the gym, and like any other day, Jasper was playing basketball with his buddy Chris. "Shit, Snow, you don't even practice, how the fuck can you be so good at this?" said Chris, fatigued. "Come on, I told you it's part of my genius," Jasper replied self-centeredly as he spun the ball around on one of his fingers. "To hell with genius. Your reflexes and fitness are always perfect, and all you do is play video games!" complained Chris, sitting back to rest. "Jasper is a superhuman. I'm sure he could fight a yellow XCP," Michael joked, joining the conversation. "And there you go again with the XCPs. Looks like you and Laura have nothing more to talk about. By the way, where is she?" asked Jasper as he drank some water. "Runnnnn!!!" As if the universe itself answered his question, everyone in the gym heard a scream. Everyone recognized the voice: it was Laura. "You must run, he... he's coming!" Laura came into the gym saying those words, leaving everyone shocked. The girl kept hyperventilating, her body was completely sweaty and her face showed an expression of pure panic. Something was wrong. "What's wrong, Laura, are they thieves or criminals?" another girl asked as she hugged her. "No... No. I... This morning I had seen something strange and decided to investigate. I didn't think... I didn't think!!! It's an XCP, there's one in the school, we must get out of here!!!" Frightened, Laura ran out of the place in a hurry. The other students froze, processing what they had just heard. "Wow... I must admit, they set the scene well. William, Laura is a tremendous actress," Jasper said, breaking the silence. "You... you don't believe her?" asked Chris, fear showing in his eyes. "Come on, Chris, are you seriously going to believe that phony? I'm sure she and Michael planned it. Come on, Michael, admit it!" said Jasper placing his hand on his friend's shoulder. But unlike what he expected, Michael's body was shivering, as if he was standing in the North Pole. "But what the fuck... Come on, you believe in that set-up too? I'm going to show you that it's fake. If Laura came from that direction, that must be where that XCP guy is." Jasper approached the door of the gym with his typical confidence. But as soon as he set foot outside, the whole world seemed to freeze. The air, once warm and filled with the smell of sweat and burnt rubber, was now cold, a deep chill that chilled him to the bone. The fluorescent light in the hallway flickered dimly, as if even the electricity sensed danger. And then he saw him. Down the hall, moving forward with unnatural movements, came a person. No, it was not a person. He was tall, absurdly tall. His white skin looked like wet paper, hanging in very thin folds. He had no mouth, no nose, just two saucer-white eyes staring at Jasper. A warning of pure instinct coursed through his body. His mind screamed: run. His legs barely responded. "Shit!!!" he blurted out, his heart bursting in his chest. He tried to turn around to go back to the gym, but he didn't have time. One of those whip-long limbs stretched out faster than a human could see, impacting him full on. Jasper went flying, his back crashing brutally against the metal lockers, the blow knocking the air from his lungs. From inside the gym, the screams of his teammates could be heard: "Noooooo, helpaaaaaa!!! It's a... it's a...!!!!" "It can't be, it killed Jasper!!! That thing killed Jasper!!!" The monster, without wasting a second, turned its head impossibly towards the gym door. And with a single long, grotesque step, it turned its attention to them.Expand

All the people in the bar looked at Jasper with caution; they didn’t like the challenge.“A duel of fire shots? You must be the copier Lidia told me about,” Felix said as he downed a shot of tequila.“Well then, let’s do it. Dawn is close—how about you sit down and have a drink?” said the wide-brimmed-hat man as he threw a chair at Jasper.Jasper, in response, simply looked at it and then refocused his gaze on the other sheriff in the place. His expression made everything clear.“Hey! Have you lost your mind?” Lidia finally shouted.“It’s obvious this is just a way to buy time. They’re surely going to bring all their XCP-hunter companions and hunt everyone down.”“Hey, if we had wanted to call for backup, we would have already done it, Miss Ice, don’t you think?” I18 said mockingly.“They’re right about that, Lidia. If this organization is like White Skull said, I don’t see the need for them to come back, much less for a duel,” one of the inhabitants commented calmly.“But no, there a

"SHHH!"A large white light appeared inside an inn in Ash Hollow. Within seconds, the light split into six different parts."SHSHHS!"Abruptly, the parts scattered at high speed. The sounds of impacts followed immediately.Bam!"Ash, Neo 7, I told you to do it properly!" Slavik complained after crashing into a painting."At least you hit the wall..." Lin commented; he had crashed into a table."Did you copy Neo 8’s ability? Good idea, Neo 7," F16 said as he got back on his feet."Yes, although I don’t fully control it yet. It was something I came up with on the spot. The plan itself was pretty simple," Jasper began to explain."We had a confrontation with an XCP with ice-based abilities in Gallows Creek. We managed to escape thanks to Neo 8, but we couldn’t afford to take that risk again.""So I asked her to explain her ability to me. Her explanation was hard to follow, but I understood the core of it: her power is a distortion of reality based on the meaning she assigns to the words

All the inhabitants aimed their weapons at the Neo X group.“Great, now we’re surrounded. Where are Snow and Slavik? We need them,” Suse said, looking around cautiously.“We don’t have time to call them, Neo 4. I can endure the pain from the shot,” F16 commented, looking at Felix.“Take care of them. I’ll keep an eye on the lord of flames,” F16 ordered as he pulled the bullet out of his shoulder.“You didn’t need to tell me, I was already planning to. Give me three seconds.” Suse stepped forward, her shining katana dazzling.“Die!” the creature said as it fired.Bam!As soon as she heard the shot, Suse changed the number in her eyes from 44 to 100, slicing the bullet in half with her katana. The girl didn’t waste time and began to accelerate, shifting the frames from 100 to 150.“One second,” the girl thought, starting to cut down several of those who were supposed to be the inhabitants of Gallows Creek.“Two seconds.”She moved to the left, taking down three more opponents in an insta

“What’s going on? It’s like they’ve seen a ghost,” the man mocked as he kept conjuring fire in his hands.Suse scanned the place with her eyes. It was strange. People were watching the scene, but no one was scared—it was as if they didn’t care.“If you’re revealing yourself, that means you plan to turn yourself in, right?” F16 asked, taking another sip of his cocktail.“Hey, I’m the justice around here. That’s supposed to be my line,” the sheriff replied sarcastically.“But I got tired of leaving behind charred corpses. This time, I want to talk to you. Even if I kill you, they’ll just send another group, and it’ll be the same hassle.”F16 noticed he wasn’t lying. He finished his drink, stood up, and left a few coins on the table.“Let’s talk outside then,” he said as he walked out.The man with the wide-brimmed hat smiled broadly as he followed him.“That’s what I like to see. I knew I could reason with you.”Suse and Lin decided to follow them. If things went well, the XCP might sur

Neo 8’s body didn’t take long to completely collapse onto the ground. Along with her, the bubble finally shattered like broken glass, dissolving into fragments of energy that faded in the air.Jasper stared at the scene, stunned. His mind had gone blank; he still wasn’t used to this. To the idea of losing someone like that.“Bam!”Seizing the opportunity, Lidia fired at him, ready to add another Neo X to her list of corpses.“Hey, asshole, focus!” Slavik shouted, deflecting the attack with his gloves.“Look, we can cry and feel bad for the kid later, but we won’t be able to do that if we’re dead. Do you understand?” Slavik said coldly.Jasper clenched his teeth in rage as he forced himself to regain his composure.“I’m going to kill you, you bitch!” he shouted, pointing at Lidia.“I must admit, out of everyone they’ve sent, you’re the most entertaining,” the sheriff mocked, finally putting some distance between them.“Jasper, we’ll have to retreat. We had no information on this enemy.

"I can't believe they sent a bunch of kids to capture us. Ha, they really are desperate," Lidia mocked the group. The skin on her face began to deform as her nails took on a strange blue color. In just a few seconds, her face was nothing more than a skull from which an unusual and striking blue hair sprouted, which she wore as if it were real hair."Kids? I hope you regret those words," Slavik replied in an arrogant tone.He lunged at the woman with agility, and in response, she pulled a shotgun from her belt. The weapon had already been modified—parts of ice covered the barrel."Bam!""Bam!""Bam!"Three shots were fired in the direction of Neo 6, who, standing just a few meters in front of Lidia, spun his electric staff to defend himself, barely managing to deflect each bullet.Without giving her time for another round, Slavik closed the distance and swung his weapon at Lidia. She tried to block the blow with her arms, jumping backward and sliding across the frozen ground."Shit, hey
