"An impoverished intern who possesses miraculous medical arts, commands the respect of the Sterling Syndicate, and throws away a hundred thousand dollars to save a stranger's child without blinking?" Evelyn murmured, her cool lips curving into a rare, captivating smile.

‘He still loves me, He was just hurt yesterday! If I apologize, if I cry and tell him I was forced, he will take me back. He always takes me back!’ Vanessa convinced herself desperately, clutching her handbag tightly.

Without another glance at Gavin, Vanessa turned and rushed out of the ward toward the main hospital lobby.

The grand central lobby of Apex Medical Center was bustling with doctors, visiting specialists, and patients.

Melvin walked calmly across the polished marble floor toward the main exit, his posture straight, his eyes sharp and bright. Melvin stopped, turning around slowly. His expression was an unyielding wall of ice, his dark eyes looking down at her as if she were nothing more than a speck of dust on the road.

"What do you want, Vanessa?" Melvin asked, his tone flat and utterly devoid of emotion.

"Melvin, I was wrong! I was so wrong!" Vanessa wept, stepping closer with her hands clasped in prayer. "Yesterday... yesterday was a huge mistake! Gavin forced me! He threatened my job, he threatened to destroy my career at the hospital if I didn't go along with him!"

She tried to reach for his hand again, her voice trembling with manufactured agony. "I never loved him, Melvin! You know I only love you! We spent five years together... five years! You can't just throw all of that away because of one mistake! Please, forgive me... let's start over!"
