The mountain beneath Blackthorn Fortress exploded. Stone erupted upward as a deafening roar tore through the battlefield, powerful enough to shake the heavens themselves. Cracks spread violently across the fortress courtyard while terrified soldiers lost their footing. Even the undead hordes staggered as something colossal awakened deep below the mountain.

Henry dropped to one knee. Agony ripped through every nerve in his body. The crimson flames surrounding him spiralled out of control now, twisting through the storm like living creatures. Silver markings had spread fully across his arms and neck, glowing brighter with every heartbeat. The power inside him no longer felt like simple magic.

It felt alive. And it was growing stronger by the second. The rain evaporated before touching his skin. Nearby soldiers stared at him with expressions of horror and awe. Moments ago, Henry had been another frightened apprentice struggling to survive the massacre.

Now the very air trembled around him. The hooded dark mage backed away slowly, unable to hide the fear in his voice anymore.“No human should survive a full awakening,” the mage whispered. “The Dragon Heart should consume him.”

The Lich King remained motionless amid the chaos, though the blue flames inside his hollow eyes burned with greater intensity now.“Interesting,” the undead monarch murmured. “He resisted the first surge.”

Another violent tremor shook the fortress. Far beneath the mountain, something massive moved again. Henry clutched his chest as another wave of ancient memories crashed into his mind. He saw dragons chained beneath burning skies. He saw armoured warriors slaughtering dragon riders across ruined kingdoms. He saw a throne surrounded by endless fire while a lone emperor stood against an army of monsters pouring from a black abyss.

Then the emperor turned. Silver eyes met Henry’s directly.“You are late.”

The vision shattered instantly. Henry gasped sharply as reality returned around him. His breathing had become uneven, almost animalistic. Every instinct screamed at him to unleash the power flooding through his veins. To destroy, to burn, to dominate. Fear crawled into his stomach. Because part of him wanted to. Sir Gareth noticed immediately.

The older knight slowly approached despite the dangerous heat radiating from Henry’s body. Blood still stained Gareth’s armour from earlier battles, yet he forced himself forward anyway.“Henry,” Gareth said carefully, “look at me.”

Henry tried. But the voices inside his head kept growing louder. Ancient whispers echoed endlessly through his thoughts in a language older than the kingdoms themselves. Somehow, he understood fragments of it. Blood of the throne.Heir of flame. Break the chains.

Henry squeezed his eyes shut.“Make it stop,” he muttered painfully. Sir Gareth grabbed his shoulder firmly despite the flames scorching his gauntlet.“Listen to my voice,” the knight ordered. “You are not a monster.”

The words struck deeper than Gareth realised.Monster.That fear had already begun spreading through the battlefield. Knights whispered nervously while apprentices backed away from Henry. Even the surviving mages stared at him with open suspicion now. Only moments after gaining power, the loneliness returned. Perhaps it had never truly left.

A terrible scream suddenly echoed overhead. Henry looked up instantly. The corrupted dragon convulsed violently against the abyssal chains binding its body. Black veins spread farther across its crimson scales while dark mist poured from its mouth. The creature’s golden eyes flickered between gold and blood-red now.

The corruption was winning. The hooded mage raised both hands triumphantly.“Yes,” he shouted. “Submit to the abyss!”Dozens of dark runes ignited around the dragon simultaneously. The ancient beast roared in agony. Then its eyes snapped toward Henry again. This time, the voice inside his mind sounded desperate.“If I fall… kill me.”

Henry froze. The dragon lowered its enormous head slightly despite the chains restraining it.“There are fates worse than death, little king.”

Pain twisted inside Henry’s chest. He barely understood what was happening anymore, yet hearing fear in the dragon’s voice unsettled him deeply. Creatures like this were supposed to be invincible legends. And now it was begging for mercy. The Lich King slowly raised Soulrender toward the corrupted dragon.“You failed once before,” the undead ruler said coldly. “History will not repeat itself tonight.”

The dragon snarled furiously despite its weakening state.“You speak as though you escaped fate yourself, traitor.”

Those words changed everything. The battlefield seemed to pause for one brief moment.Traitor.Even the hooded mage looked shocked. The blue flames inside the Lich King’s eyes narrowed dangerously.“Careful,” the undead monarch warned softly. But Henry noticed something important. The dragon knew him. Not merely as an enemy.Personally.

Before Henry could process the implication, Kael Durham rushed toward Sir Gareth through the burning courtyard.“The western defences have collapsed completely!” Kael shouted breathlessly. “Demons are entering the inner district!”

As if to confirm his words, several armoured abyss warriors emerged through the smoke behind him. Unlike the mindless monsters from earlier, these demons moved with terrifying discipline. Black armour covered their bodies while glowing red symbols pulsed across their weapons.

One demon stepped forward calmly. Its face looked almost human, aside from the curved black horns protruding from its skull. Then it smiled at Henry.“The heir awakens at last,” the demon said smoothly. Henry’s stomach tightened.“You know me, too?”

The demon laughed softly.“Oh, little dragon king… the abyss has waited centuries for you.”

Sir Gareth immediately positioned himself between them.“What does that mean?”The demon ignored the knight completely.“Our emperor foresaw this night long ago,” the creature continued. “The Dragon Bloodline always returns when the world approaches ruin.”

Henry felt the crimson power inside him react violently at those words. The demon noticed. Its smile widened further.“Tell me,” it asked quietly, “can you already hear the throne calling your name?”

A sharp pain suddenly pierced Henry’s skull. Visions flashed through his mind again. A massive black throne surrounded by dragon skeletons.Countless armies kneeling beneath crimson banners. And himself…Sitting upon that throne while the world burned around him. Henry staggered backwards in horror.“No…”

The demon’s voice softened almost sympathetically.“You fear your own nature.”That statement cut deeper than Henry expected. Because it was true. Every moment since awakening the Dragon Heart, he had felt himself changing. His senses had sharpened unnaturally. His anger burned hotter. Violence felt easier now.

Tempting, even. And somewhere deep within his soul, a terrifying instinct whispered constantly that power alone mattered. Sir Gareth noticed Henry trembling.“Do not listen to them,” the knight said sharply. “You decide who you become.”

The demon chuckled.“How noble.”Then the creature moved. Faster than any human should have been capable of moving. Sir Gareth barely raised his sword before the demon’s black spear slammed into him hard enough to send him crashing through broken stone. Blood sprayed across the courtyard.

“Sir Gareth!” Henry shouted.

Rage exploded inside him instantly. The crimson flames surrounding his body erupted violently as dragonfire spiralled outward across the battlefield. Nearby undead creatures disintegrated immediately while the stone beneath Henry’s feet melted from the heat.

The demon grinned.“There it is.”Henry charged. The world blurred around him. One second, he stood beside the shattered courtyard. Next, he appeared directly before the demon warrior with dragonfire engulfing his fist. The impact shattered the ground. Flames exploded outward like a volcanic eruption while nearby soldiers were thrown backwards by the shockwave alone.

The demon blocked the strike with its spear, but cracks spread across the black weapon instantly. For the first time, surprise crossed the creature’s face. Henry attacked again without hesitation.Faster.Harder.Every movement felt unnatural now, driven by instincts he did not fully understand. Dragonfire roared around him while silver light burned within his eyes.

The demon barely dodged the next strike. Crimson flames tore through the fortress wall behind it, vaporising stone entirely. Several soldiers stared at Henry in disbelief.“That power…” “He’s fighting like a monster.”

The whispers reached Henry’s ears immediately.Monster.Again.The word hurt more than the battle itself. His momentary hesitation cost him dearly. The demon suddenly thrust its spear forward. Black energy pierced through Henry’s shoulder. Pain exploded across his body as the force hurled him backwards through burning debris. Henry crashed into the courtyard hard enough to crack the stone beneath him.

The demon approached slowly.“You hesitate because you still cling to weakness,” the creature said coldly. “Compassion. Mercy. Fear.”

Henry struggled back to his feet while blood dripped from his wounded shoulder. The demon pointed its spear toward terrified civilians fleeing nearby.“That hesitation will kill everyone around you.”

Before Henry could react, the demon vanished. A scream echoed instantly. Henry turned sharply. The demon had appeared beside a group of fleeing apprentices near the inner gate. One terrified girl stumbled to the ground while the creature raised its spear above her.

Time seemed to slow. Henry saw the terror in her eyes. Saw the helplessness. And suddenly, he remembered himself.Weak.Powerless.Always too late. Something inside him broke completely. Dragonfire exploded across the battlefield with terrifying force.

The demon’s eyes widened. For the first time, a genuine alarm crossed its face. Because Henry disappeared. Not moved.Disappeared.One instant, he lay wounded across the courtyard. Next, he stood before the demon with crimson flames swirling around him like the wrath of a god. His silver eyes no longer looked human.

They looked ancient. Henry caught the black spear barehanded. The weapon melted instantly. The demon finally looked afraid.“What are you—”

Henry struck once. That single punch unleashed a wave of dragonfire powerful enough to split the courtyard apart. The demon warrior vanished within the flames before it could even scream. Complete silence spread afterwards. Not the absence of sound, but the stunned quiet of an entire battlefield witnessing something impossible.

Henry stood motionless at the centre of the destruction while crimson fire spiralled around his body. The surviving demons stepped backwards instinctively. Even the undead halted briefly. And atop the ruined battlements, the Lich King stared directly at Henry. Then the undead monarch spoke words that chilled the entire battlefield.“The Dragon Emperor has returned.”

For a brief moment, everything else faded into the background. The roaring battle. The screams of dying soldiers. The clash between undead armies and abyssal demons. All of it became distant.
