At that moment, Damien could not stop himself from smiling.

The smile slowly spread across his face, deep and full of hope, because one thing was clear in his mind now: he was not going to make the same mistake again.

He would not trust the Whitmore family.

He would not wait for someone else to save him.

He would not waste the second chance he had been given.

Before he could say anything else, another notification appeared in front of him, and the system screen that had been floating in the air suddenly changed.

[SYSTEM MISSION COUNTDOWN ACTIVATED.]

[TIME REMAINING BEFORE THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION IS RELEASED: 01:00:00.]

[THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION WILL BE ACTIVATED IN ONE HOUR.]

Damien stared at the countdown as the numbers began to move.

[00:59:59.]

His heart started beating faster.

He had one hour before the system gave him his first mission, one hour before he found out what he needed to do to begin gaining experience, system points, and rewards, and even though he had no idea what kind of mission was waiting for him, excitement and nervousness rose together inside his chest.

"What will it give me?" Damien wondered.

He had too many questions and not enough time to ask them, but he knew one thing for certain: whatever the system asked him to do, he would do it.

Damien quickly changed his clothes, putting on a clean shirt, dark pants, and a pair of shoes that had been waiting inside his closet for months, and while he dressed, his eyes kept moving toward the countdown that remained in the air in front of him.

[00:58:42.]

He did not dare waste any more time.

Today was his graduation, but the ceremony was no longer the most important thing on his mind.

The apocalypse was coming and

He needed to start preparing immediately.

Once he finished dressing, Damien left his room and joined his parents, who were waiting for him near the front door, and the three of them quickly left the house and headed toward his school.

During the graduation ceremony, Damien sat among the other students while his mind remained somewhere else entirely.

because he could not stop thinking about the system farmland, the unlimited storage space, and the ten thousand dollars that had been placed inside his system account.

He needed to begin planting as soon as possible.

If he bought the right crops and planted them inside the system farmland, he could harvest them within two or three hours inside the system.

If he sold the crops through the system, he would receive twice their value.

That meant he could become a millionaire in only a few hours.

The thought made Damien's heart beat with excitement, but he did not allow himself to get carried away, because money alone would not be enough to protect the people he loved when the apocalypse arrived.

He needed food, he needed medicine.

He needed machines, tools, fuel, building supplies, and a safe place where people could live without fearing the cold.

He also needed to begin planting cash crops, the kind that took years to grow and produce valuable harvests, because the apocalypse would not end after a few weeks, and he could not focus only on the food that would help him survive today.

He needed to prepare for the years ahead.

His dream was no longer just to own a farm or make enough money to live comfortably.

He wanted to build an entire country, a country with enough food for everyone, a country where people would not be denied a chance to live because they came from a weak family or failed to awaken a powerful ability, a country where people could receive food and medicine without being treated like worthless animals.

If he wanted to make that dream real, he had to begin working immediately.

After the graduation ceremony ended, Damien stood with his parents outside the school while they took pictures together.

His father placed one hand on his shoulder and smiled proudly at the camera, while his mother stood on his other side with her arm wrapped around him, her face glowing with happiness.

Damien looked at them through the camera flash, and his chest tightened as he remembered the future he had already lived through.

His father would die in the first wave of the apocalypse.

His mother would suffer for two years before she finally froze to death.

But this time, Damien would not allow either of those things to happen.

He would protect them no matter what it took.

When they finished taking pictures, his mother touched his arm and smiled. "Your father and I are hosting a small dinner tonight to celebrate your graduation, so do not go anywhere for too long."

"Yes," his father added. "It will only be a small dinner with a few relatives and close friends, but this is an important day for you, and we want to celebrate it properly."

Damien looked at both of them, and although he wanted to stay with them, although he wanted to sit at the dinner table and enjoy one peaceful evening before the future began to change, the countdown still floated in front of his eyes.

[00:41:16.]

He could not waste the time.

"I would love to come," Damien said, forcing a small smile. "But I have something important to take care of first, and I need to handle it as quickly as possible."

His mother looked at him with concern. "What is so important that it cannot wait until after dinner?"

"I cannot explain it yet," Damien replied. "But I promise I will come back as soon as I am finished, and I will not take too long."

His father studied his face for a moment before nodding. "Alright, but do not disappear for the entire evening, and make sure you come back as quickly as you can."

"We will wait for you," his mother said. "Just be careful."

Damien nodded. "I will."

He turned away from them and quickly left the school grounds.

The first place he needed to visit was a large agricultural market on the other side of the city, a place where farmers and business owners sold seeds, crops, plants, fertilizer, farming tools, and almost everything else related to agriculture.

He needed to buy seeds immediately.

He also needed to study the market and find the right companies to purchase in the future, especially food-processing companies, storage companies, medicine companies, and factories that could help him turn raw crops into products people could use.

Buying seeds was only the beginning.

He needed to build an entire supply chain before the apocalypse began, and every minute he wasted now would become another problem later.

Damien walked quickly through the busy streets, his mind already forming plans for the future, when a loud cry suddenly came from the road ahead.

"Help!"

The cry was filled with panic, and Damien turned his head toward the sound.

A young woman was lying on the ground near the side of the road, her face pale and her body trembling as blood spread across the front of her clothes.

Another woman was kneeling beside her, pressing both hands against the injured woman's stomach while looking around in fear.

"Please, someone call an ambulance!" the woman shouted. "Call an ambulance now! She is losing too much blood!"

People had gathered around them, but no one was doing much to help.

A young man stood close to the injured woman with his hands shaking as he tried to keep her still, while the people around him only watched and whispered among themselves.

The traffic on the road was packed tightly, and cars were barely moving.

Even if someone called an ambulance immediately, it could take an hour or longer to arrive, and the nearest hospital was far enough away that getting there through the traffic would take even more time.

Damien glanced at the woman on the ground and immediately saw how serious her condition was.

The blood was flowing through the woman's fingers despite the pressure being applied to the wound, and her lips were losing color while her breathing became weaker and weaker.

The young woman beside her pressed harder against the injured woman's stomach.

"Stay with me," she begged. "Please, stay with me, the ambulance is coming, just keep your eyes open."

Damien stood there for a moment, watching the scene unfold, but he did not move.

He had too much to do, he needed to reach the agricultural market, buy the seeds, enter the system, and begin preparing before the apocalypse arrived.

This was not his problem.

At least, that was what he told himself as he took one step away from the crowd.

Then the system notification sounded in front of him.

[MEGAN WHITMORE.]

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION ALERT.]

[SAVE HER.]

Damien lay there in the frozen pit with his broken body sinking deeper into the ice and garbage, with the cold wrapping tighter around his chest like invisible hands squeezing the last bits of warmth out of him, and somewhere in the fog of pain and exhaustion his mind started drifting toward his mother."I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice so weak it barely made a sound, so thin it almost disappeared into the frozen air around him. "I'm so sorry, Mother, I failed you."The words came out broken and slow because his throat was closing up from the cold, because his lungs were struggling to pull in air, because every part of him was shutting down piece by piece."I failed you," he said again, and tears started sliding down his frozen cheeks. "I was so foolish, I believed them, I believed every single word those good-for-nothing bastards told me, I thought if I just worked hard enough, if I just did what they asked, they would keep their promise, they would give me the ring, they would le
