Chapter 1 - The Fire Ring
Damien stood in the center of the Whitmore family's grand living room with his hands clasped together in front of him and his heart pounding so hard he could hear it in his ears.He had been waiting for this day for three years now, three long years of sitting inside four walls while the world outside stayed frozen and deadly, three years of working himself to exhaustion every single night just so he could finally earn what they promised him when he first came to this house broken and desperate. The fire ring. That small piece of metal that would let him walk outside again without his lungs freezing in his chest, without his skin cracking open from the cold, without dying like so many others had died since the apocalypse came and turned the entire world into a frozen graveyard. The frozen apocalypse had struck without warning five years ago and it swallowed cities whole, it killed billions in the first month alone, and if it were not for the top families who worked day and night to cr
Chapter 2
Damien stood there listening to them talk and for a moment he felt a strange kind of pride swell up in his chest because he was the one who made that drug, he spent three years locked in a basement lab mixing chemicals and running tests and failing over and over again until he finally figured it out.He did that. And now the Whitmore family was going to be one of the richest families in the entire world because of him.Damien looked at Clara and smiled. "I am glad it worked."Clara glanced at him for half a second and then looked back at her father without saying anything. That was when the door opened.Everyone turned toward the sound and a man walked into the room like he owned it.He was tall, maybe six foot two, with dark hair slicked back and a suit that probably cost more than Damien had earned in his entire life, his face was handsome in a cold sharp way and his eyes swept over the room with the kind of confidence that only came from being born into money.Julian Crane.Damien
Chapter 3
Immediately Damien's hands curled into fists against the floor and his whole body started shaking, not from fear, not from pain, but from rage. "My father died when the apocalypse hit, he died instantly, but my mother, she lasted two more years, two years of begging you for help, two years of me working for you so you would give her a ring, and you let her freeze to death anyway.""Your mother was weak," Clara said.Damien's head snapped toward her and his breath caught in his throat.Clara was looking at him now with her arms still crossed and her face completely calm. "She was weak and she was a burden and giving her a ring would have been a waste, we made the right choice."Damien stared at his wife, the woman he had been married to for four years, the woman he thought he loved, the woman who used to hold his hand when things were hard and tell him everything would be okay."How can you say that?" Damien whispered."Because it is the truth," Clara said. "And now that we have the fo

Julian nodded slowly and looked at Richard with the kind of expression that said they were both thinking the same thing. "He is absolutely going to be a problem."Richard's face hardened and he walked back toward the center of the room where Damien was still on the floor with the guards holding him down. "We cannot let him leave."Margaret folded her arms across her chest and her voice came out sharp and final. "Not after what just happened, not when we are this close.""Close to what?" Damien said, his voice muffled against the floor. "You already collected everything, you tookthe formula, I gave you three years of my life, what else do you want from me?""We want you silent," Julian said, and he said it like he was discussing the weather. "Right now you are the only person in the world who knows the truth about that drug, and if word gets out that you were the one who created it, every top family in this city is going to want you, they are going to hunt you down, they are going to o
Chapter 5
Then she moved to his left arm and did the same thing.Damien lay on the floor with both legs broken and both arms broken and blood pouring from his mouth and his nose and cuts all over his face, he could not move, he could barely breathe, every inch of him was on fire with pain so intense that his body kept trying to shut down just to escape it.Clara handed the bat back to the guard and smoothed her dress with both hands like she had just finished something ordinary."Good," she said quietly. "Now I can forgive you for wasting my time."Damien stared at her through the haze of pain and shock and he could not believe this was real, could not believe this was the woman he had been married to for four years, the woman he thought he knew. How did he let them trick him like this? How did he not see it coming? He was so angry, so devastated, so destroyed that he could not even form words anymore, all he could do was lie there and shake and bleed and wait for whatever came next.Richard lo
Chapter 6
Damien lay there in the frozen pit with his broken body sinking deeper into the ice and garbage, with the cold wrapping tighter around his chest like invisible hands squeezing the last bits of warmth out of him, and somewhere in the fog of pain and exhaustion his mind started drifting toward his mother."I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice so weak it barely made a sound, so thin it almost disappeared into the frozen air around him. "I'm so sorry, Mother, I failed you."The words came out broken and slow because his throat was closing up from the cold, because his lungs were struggling to pull in air, because every part of him was shutting down piece by piece."I failed you," he said again, and tears started sliding down his frozen cheeks. "I was so foolish, I believed them, I believed every single word those good-for-nothing bastards told me, I thought if I just worked hard enough, if I just did what they asked, they would keep their promise, they would give me the ring, they would le
Chapter 7
The moment Damien heard his mother’s voice and saw her standing alive in front of him, he could no longer control himself. He rushed forward and pulled her into his arms. His movement was so sudden that his mother stumbled back, her eyes widening as she stared at him in complete shock, but Damien held her tightly against his chest as though she might disappear the moment he let go.For two years, he had watched her suffer. For two years, he had listened to her weak breathing and seen the cold slowly take her life while the Whitmore family kept the fire ring that could have saved her.For two years, he had blamed himself for not being able to protect her.Now she was standing in front of him again, warm, healthy, and confused, and Damien could not stop the tears from filling his eyes."What the hell is going on?" his mother asked, her voice filled with worry. "Why are you doing this? Damien, are you okay? What happened to you?"Damien did not answer her.He only held her tighter while
Chapter 8
At that moment Damien stared at the notification without blinking.Another line of text appeared beneath it.[STARTER ATTRIBUTES HAVE BEEN UNLOCKED.][1. UNLIMITED SYSTEM STORAGE.][2. UNLIMITED SYSTEM FARMLAND.][3. SYSTEM TIME DIFFERENCE.][ONE MINUTE INSIDE THE SYSTEM EQUALS ONE DAY OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM.]Damien's eyes widened as he read the next line.[ONE HOUR INSIDE THE SYSTEM EQUALS SIXTY DAYS OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM.]He quickly began calculating in his head. One day inside the system had twenty-four hours, and every hour held sixty minutes, which meant one day inside the system contained one thousand four hundred and forty minutes. If one thousand four hundred and forty days in the system world would equal one day in real words That was almost four years in the system word.Damien's lips slowly parted. He had sixty days before the apocalypse, but inside the system, he could spend over 240 years and still gain the same amount of outside time before the disaster arrived. With that mu

At that moment, Damien could not stop himself from smiling. The smile slowly spread across his face, deep and full of hope, because one thing was clear in his mind now: he was not going to make the same mistake again. He would not trust the Whitmore family. He would not wait for someone else to save him.He would not waste the second chance he had been given. Before he could say anything else, another notification appeared in front of him, and the system screen that had been floating in the air suddenly changed.[SYSTEM MISSION COUNTDOWN ACTIVATED.][TIME REMAINING BEFORE THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION IS RELEASED: 01:00:00.][THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION WILL BE ACTIVATED IN ONE HOUR.]Damien stared at the countdown as the numbers began to move.[00:59:59.]His heart started beating faster. He had one hour before the system gave him his first mission, one hour before he found out what he needed to do to begin gaining experience, system points, and rewards, and even though he had no idea what k
Chapter 10
At that exact moment, Damien felt his entire body go rigid with shock, and it was not the shock of receiving another system mission that froze him in place, it was the single word attached to that mission, a name that struck something deep and painful inside him the second it registered in his mind.Whitmore.That name alone was enough to send a cold shiver crawling up his spine, a name he had never once expected to hear again so soon, a name that belonged to the very family who had destroyed everything he once loved in the life he had already lived through. Clara, his wife in that frozen future, the woman who stood over him with a bat in her hands and broke every bone in his body without a flicker of guilt on her face, her family name had been Whitmore. That could only mean one thing, and the realization hit him like a punch to the gut, this woman lying on the ground bleeding out in front of him, this Megan Whitmore, had to be connected somehow to that same bloodline, to that same r
