Chapter 6: The Bloodmere Trap
last update2026-08-26 16:43:52

The heavy steel door of the shelter groaned as Nyvara kicked it open, the frozen hinges snapping like dry bone. The blizzard outside had been replaced by something far worse: the smell of ozone and the rhythmic, heavy thrum of hovering gunships.

“He’s already here,” Nyvara whispered, her hand tightening around the hilt of her blade until her knuckles turned a ghostly white. “The frequency of that mana... it’s suffocating.”

Kaelion stepped out behind her, squinting against the harsh red glare of emergency flares lighting up the horizon toward the colony. “So, Zarek. High-Council defector, telepathic creep, and apparently a fan of dramatic entrances. Does he always travel with a private army, or am I just that special?”

“You’re that special,” Nyvara snapped, already breaking into a sprint toward the colony’s perimeter. “Move, Kaelion! If those mercenaries breach the inner sanctum, the civilian casualty count won’t just be a number. It’ll be an extinction event.”

“Right behind you!” Kaelion yelled, his boots hitting the cracked pavement with unnatural force. Every stride felt like he was being launched from a catapult. “System, give me a status update. How many red dots are we looking at?”

[ DETECTED: 412 HOSTILE SIGNATURES. ]

[ WARNING: LARGE-SCALE GRAVITY WELL DETECTED IN SECTOR 7 PLAZA. ]

“Four hundred?” Kaelion whistled, swerving around a scorched husk of a transport truck. “That’s not a siege; that’s a parade. Hey, Nyv! Is it normal for an S-rank to bring this much backup just for one guy?”

“Zarek doesn’t take risks!” Nyvara shouted over her shoulder. “He’s a tactician. He doesn’t just fight; he dismantles. Look!”

They cleared the final rise of debris, and Kaelion skidded to a halt. The colony—the only home he’d ever known—was being folded into the earth. Massive, shimmering violet spheres were suspended in the air, crushing buildings beneath them as if the air itself had gained ten thousand tons of weight.

“What the hell is that?” Kaelion gasped. “The ground is literally sinking!”

“Gravity tech,” a voice grunted from a nearby pile of rubble.

A man with a jagged scar across his nose and a massive, dented shield crawled out from behind a barrier. Beside him, a woman with short-cropped hair was frantically reloading a rail-cannon, her fingers bloodied.

“Vanya! Therion!” Nyvara landed beside them in a blur of silver light. “Report! Where’s the rest of the garrison?”

“Scattered or squashed, Commander,” Therion spit out a mouthful of dust, gesturing to the violet spheres. “Zarek’s mercenaries dropped those gravity anchors ten minutes ago. We can’t even get a shot off. The projectiles just get sucked into the ground before they hit anything.”

“And the mercenaries?” Nyvara asked.

“They’re picking us off like fish in a barrel,” Vanya said, her voice tight with suppressed rage. “They have localized dampeners. They move through the high-gravity zones like it’s a stroll in the park, while my team can’t even lift their own rifles.”

Kaelion looked at the spheres, then at the soldiers. “Wait, so if I go in there, I’m basically going to be a pancake?”

“Worse,” Vanya looked at Kaelion, her eyes widening. “Wait, is this the kid? The one from the reports? The ‘Phoenix’?”

“In the flesh. Well, mostly new flesh,” Kaelion said, offering a weak wave. “Listen, if I can get to those anchors, can I break them? I’ve got 250 Strength. That’s got to count for something.”

“Don’t be a moron,” Therion growled. “It’s not just weight. It’s a polarized energy field. You’ll be disintegrated before you get within ten feet of the core. Even Nyvara can’t pierce it.”

“He’s right,” a smooth, melodic voice drifted through the air, seemingly coming from every direction at once.

The gravity spheres suddenly pulsed, and the mercenaries—masked figures in high-tech obsidian armor—parted like the Red Sea. A man floated toward them, his feet never touching the ash-covered ground. He wore white robes that looked pristine despite the carnage, and his eyes were the color of a bruised sunset.

“Zarek,” Nyvara hissed, stepping in front of Kaelion.

“Nyvara. You look tired,” Zarek said, his smile thin and devoid of warmth. “And you’re protecting a treasure you don’t understand. Step aside. I don’t want to kill the Silver Valkyrie today. It would be such a waste of talent.”

“You’re not touching him, Zarek,” Nyvara said, her shadow-chains beginning to coil around her arms, humming with lethal intent.

“‘Him’?” Zarek chuckled, his gaze shifting to Kaelion. “You see a boy. I see an engine. Kaelion Vexaris—the man who found the glitch in the universe. Do you know what your ‘Undying’ core is actually made of, boy? It’s not fire. It’s compressed solar data. A fragment of the Prime System that the Council thought was lost.”

“Cool story,” Kaelion retorted, though his heart was hammering against his ribs. “Does it come with a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign? Because I’m not interested in being your battery.”

“Interest is irrelevant,” Zarek said, raising a hand. One of the gravity spheres shifted, drifting toward them like a slow-motion wrecking ball. “The extraction process is... messy. You won’t survive it, but your core will. It will power a new era for the Rifts. One where we aren't the prey.”

“Therion, Vanya, now!” Nyvara screamed.

Therion roared, slamming his shield into the ground to create a shockwave, while Vanya unleashed a barrage from her rail-cannon. But as soon as the energy rounds approached Zarek, they curved sharply downward, cratering the asphalt feet away from him.

“Is that all?” Zarek sighed.

The gravity intensified. Kaelion felt his knees buckle. It felt like an invisible giant had placed its palm on his head and was pushing. He looked at Vanya and Therion; they were already pinned to the ground, gasping for air. Even Nyvara was struggling, her silver light flickering as she fought to stay upright.

“Damn it,” Kaelion wheezed, his eyes darting to his system screen. “System! There has to be a way. How do I get through that shield?”

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Kaelion muttered, a hysterical laugh bubbling up. “Another death? Really?”

“Kaelion, get back!” Nyvara yelled, her voice strained as she forced herself to stand, her shadow-chains lashing out at the encroaching mercenaries. “I’ll hold them! Just run!”

“Nyv, listen to me!” Kaelion crawled toward her, his face inches from the cracked concrete. “The shield! I can break it, but I need a specific evolution. I need to die again, Nyvara. Right now.”

Nyvara froze, her head snapping toward him. “What? No. No way.”

“It’s the only way!” Kaelion grabbed her ankle, his eyes glowing with a desperate, golden light. “The system says I need ‘Energy Immunity’ to bypass Zarek’s anchors. If I respawn with that buff, I can walk right through his gravity wells and punch those anchors into scrap metal!”

“I am not killing you, Kaelion!” Nyvara screamed, a bolt of mana from a mercenary grazing her shoulder. “We can find another way! We can retreat!”

“There is no retreat!” Kaelion pointed to Vanya and the dying soldiers behind them. “They’re going to die! You’re going to die! Zarek is just playing with us. He’s waiting for us to get tired so he can peel me like an orange!”

“I can’t do it again,” she whispered, her voice breaking, the stoic S-rank mask finally shattering. Her eyes were shimmering with tears she refused to let fall. “I watched you turn to ash once today. I won’t be the one to do it. I won't.”

“Nyvara, look at me!” Kaelion forced himself up, grabbing her gauntlets. The gravity was crushing his lungs, making every word a battle. “You’re the Silver Valkyrie. You do what needs to be done. If you don’t do this, we all lose. Trust me. Please. Trust the Phoenix.”

“How can you ask me this?” she sobbed, even as she raised her blade, the silver metal trembling in her hand.

“Because you’re the only one I trust to do it right,” Kaelion said, forcing a smile. “Just... try to aim for the heart. I hear it’s faster that way.”

Zarek watched them with amused detachment. “A lover’s quarrel? How quaint. Mercenaries, advance. Bring me the boy. Kill the rest.”

The obsidian-clad soldiers moved forward, their blades humming with purple energy.

“Nyvara, do it!” Kaelion yelled, the gravity now so heavy he could hear his own ribs beginning to crack. “Do it now, or it’s over!”

Nyvara looked at the approaching army, then at Kaelion’s face. Her eyes were wide, filled with a raw, agonizing conflict. She gripped her blade with both hands, the mana-edge glowing with a blinding, mournful light.

“I hate you,” she whispered, her voice a broken thread. “I hate this system, and I hate you for making me do this.”

“I know,” Kaelion said softly. “But you’re still going to be my favorite bodyguard when I wake up.”

Nyvara let out a strangled cry, a sound of pure, unadulterated pain, as she lunged forward. The silver blade blurred, aimed directly at the center of the glowing wing tattoo on Kaelion’s chest.

“Kaelion!” Vanya screamed from the ground, but it was too late.

The blade pierced through him, the silver mana erupting out of his back in a spray of golden light. Kaelion’s eyes widened, his breath leaving him in a single, sharp gasp. He felt the cold steel, the sudden, familiar void of death reaching up to claim him.

He slumped forward, his forehead resting against Nyvara’s shoulder one last time.

“Thank... you...” he whispered into her ear.

Nyvara didn't let go. She held him as his body began to dissolve into embers, her screams lost in the roar of the gravity wells and the approaching thunder of Zarek’s laughter.
