Chapter 7: The Ultimate Sacrifice Play

The embers of Kaelion’s body didn't just fade into the wind; they ignited. A pillar of white-gold radiance erupted from the spot where he had fallen, pushing back the crushing violet gravity of the anchors with the sheer force of a newborn star.

[ EVOLUTION COMPLETE. ]

[ PERMANENT PASSIVE ACQUIRED: ‘NULL-POINT VITALITY’ (ENERGY IMMUNITY). ]

Kaelion stepped out of the fading light, his skin humming with a pale, translucent shimmer. He looked down at his chest. The hole Nyvara had carved was gone, replaced by a wing tattoo that now pulsed with a rhythmic, golden heat.

“I really have to stop meeting you like this, Nyv,” Kaelion said, his voice sounding oddly calm despite the chaos. He reached out, helping Nyvara to her feet.

“You... you’re alive,” Nyvara breathed, her eyes red-rimmed, her hands still shaking as she gripped her silver blade. “I felt your heart stop. I felt it.”

“Yeah, well, my heart has a very short attention span,” Kaelion quipped, turning his gaze toward the gravity anchors. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some expensive lawn ornaments to break.”

“Wait, Kaelion! Zarek isn't—"

Before she could finish, Kaelion was gone. He didn't run; he blurred. With 320 Agility, the world became a gallery of frozen statues. He stepped into the high-gravity zone around the nearest anchor. Usually, this was where bones turned to powder, but the violet energy simply washed over him like a light breeze.

“My turn,” Kaelion muttered. He wound up a punch, his arm glowing with the intensity of a forge.

CRACK.

The gravity anchor didn't just break; it shattered into a million violet glass shards. The oppressive weight over the sector vanished instantly. Vanya and Therion, pinned to the ground just moments ago, gasped as the pressure lifted.

“Impossible,” Zarek whispered, his pristine white robes fluttering as he drifted back. “No human evolution allows for total kinetic-energy displacement. What are you?”

“I’m the guy who’s tired of being dead!” Kaelion shouted, already lunging for the second anchor.

Two more strikes, two more explosions of violet light. In less than ten seconds, the ‘unbreakable’ siege was dismantled. Kaelion stood in the center of the plaza, steam rising from his knuckles, looking directly at the High-Council defector.

“So, Zarek,” Kaelion said, cracking his neck. “About that ‘extraction’? I’m ready if you are. But I should warn you, I’m a bit of a biter.”

Zarek’s thin smile returned, but it was sharper now. “Impressive. Truly. You’ve bypassed the physical laws of this world. But you’ve forgotten one thing, Phoenix. I don't need to break you to win.”

Zarek flicked his wrist. A shadow detached itself from the ruins behind Nyvara.

“Nyvara, look out!” Kaelion screamed, but he was too far.

A tall, gaunt man with eyes like void-glass—Orvian—appeared behind her. Before she could react, he drove a jagged, obsidian dagger into the small of her back. It wasn't a deep wound, but the effect was instantaneous. Nyvara’s silver light didn't flicker; it curdled. She fell to her knees, a silent scream caught in her throat as black veins began to crawl up her neck.

“What did you do?” Kaelion hissed, his golden aura flaring dangerously. “What did you do to her?!”

“This is a Soul-Eater blade, Kaelion,” Zarek explained, drifting closer, his voice silkily smooth. “It doesn't kill the body. It consumes the essence. Your little Valkyrie won't regenerate. She won't wake up. In three minutes, her soul will be entirely digested by the blade. Unless, of course, you provide a more... appetizing meal.”

“Let her go,” Kaelion said, his voice dropping to a low, vibrating growl.

“Orvian,” Zarek signaled.

The shadow-assassin twisted the blade slightly. Nyvara let out a choked gasp, her eyes unfocused.

“Stop!” Kaelion stepped forward, his hands raised. “Stop. You want the Core? You want the System? Take it. Just let her go.”

“Kaelion... no...” Nyvara managed to whisper, her voice barely a thread. “Don't... he’s lying...”

“Shut up, Nyv. I’ve got this,” Kaelion said, though his eyes were darting frantically across his system screens.

“System, what do I do?” Kaelion thought, panic finally clawing at his chest. “I can't punch a soul-curse! Give me something!”

Kaelion froze. Ninety-nine. He had died ninety-nine times. He looked at Orvian, then at the obsidian blade in his hand.

“One more,” Kaelion whispered.

“What was that, boy?” Zarek asked, tilting his head.

Kaelion looked at Orvian. The assassin was a specialist. He wasn't just a fighter; he was an executioner. His mana felt like the void—cold, absolute, and final.

“Hey, Shadow-guy,” Kaelion said, his voice suddenly devoid of its usual sarcasm. “Zarek told you to kill me if I resisted, right?”

Orvian’s void-eyes locked onto his. “I am the end of all things.”

“Yeah, yeah, you’re very edgy. I get it,” Kaelion stepped toward him, ignoring Zarek’s confused expression. “But let me ask you something. Have you ever actually killed someone? I mean, really killed them? Not just stopped their heart, but watched the light go out of their eyes?”

“Kaelion, what are you doing?” Nyvara wheezed, her hand clutching the ground.

“I’m making a deal, Nyv,” Kaelion said, his gaze never leaving Orvian. “Orvian, use your ‘Shadow Execution.’ The one that’s supposed to be forbidden. The one that deletes the target's presence from the world. Do it to me.”

“Kaelion, no!” Nyvara screamed, her voice cracking. “You don't know what that is! It’s not just death! It’s—"

“I know what it is,” Kaelion interrupted. He was standing right in front of Orvian now, the tip of the assassin’s shadow-blade touching his throat. “Everyone thinks this is easy. They see the gold fire and the stats and they think I’m playing a game. They think dying is just a nap.”

Kaelion looked back at Nyvara, and for the first time, she saw the sheer, soul-crushing exhaustion behind his golden eyes.

“Do you know what it feels like, Nyv? To die ninety-nine times?” Kaelion asked, his voice shaking. “The first ten, it hurts. It’s a burning, screaming agony. The next thirty? It’s cold. You feel your thoughts freezing, one by one. By the fiftieth time, you start to forget your own name for a few seconds when you wake up. By the eightieth... you start to wonder if the ‘you’ that woke up is the same one that went to sleep.”

The plaza went silent. Even the mercenaries stopped their advance, staring at the scavenger who was speaking of death with the familiarity of a brother.

“And now?” Kaelion turned back to Orvian, a haunting, empty smile on his face. “Now, I’m at ninety-nine. I’ve felt my guts on the pavement, I’ve felt my soul being shredded by frost, and I’ve felt my own friend put a sword through my heart. I am the world expert on leaving. So go ahead, Shadow-man. Give me the hundredth. Give me your best shot.”

“You are insane,” Orvian whispered, his blade trembling slightly.

“I’m efficient,” Kaelion corrected. “Kill me, and the System synchronizes. I’ll have the power to stop that soul-curse. If you don't kill me? I’m going to tear your head off and use it as a bowling ball. Choose.”

“Orvian, do it!” Zarek commanded, his composure finally breaking. “If he wants to meet his end, grant it! The Core will remain regardless!”

Orvian’s shadow-mana flared, turning the air around them into a pitch-black vortex. He raised his hand, his fingers elongating into claws of pure darkness. “Shadow Execution: Abyssal Silence.”

“Kaelion, please!” Nyvara sobbed, trying to reach out, but the black veins had reached her face, paralyzing her. “Don't leave me! Not like this!”

Kaelion looked at her one last time. The humor was completely gone. In its place was a profound, quiet love that no stat-screen could measure.

“I’m not leaving, Nyv,” he whispered. “I’m just... leveling up.”

Orvian’s hand plunged into Kaelion’s chest.

There was no blood. There was no gold fire. There was only a sickening, hollow thump that echoed through the minds of everyone present. Kaelion’s eyes went wide, the gold light in them sputtering like a dying candle.

[ COMMENCING ABYSSAL ASCENSION. ]

“Wait,” Zarek gasped, stepping back as the temperature didn't rise—it plummeted into the negatives. “This isn't the Phoenix. This is... something else.”

Kaelion didn't dissolve into embers this time. His body began to crack like parched earth, and from the fissures, a thick, oily black void began to pour out. The light of the colony, the red flares, even the moonlight—everything was being sucked into him.

“Kaelion?” Nyvara whispered, her eyes wide with terror.

The boy she knew was gone. In his place stood a silhouette of absolute darkness, his eyes no longer gold, but two vertical slits of abyssal purple. The wing tattoo on his chest had turned into a jagged, bleeding scar that seemed to swallow the light around it.

[ WARNING: SYSTEM STABILITY AT 12%. ]

[ THE ABYSS HAS NOTICED YOU. ]

The screen faded to black, the last thing visible being Kaelion’s hand reaching out toward Orvian—not with a punch, but with a grip that seemed to erase the very shadows the assassin commanded.

The silence that followed was louder than any explosion.

The smoke of Sector 7 didn’t just choke the lungs; it froze them. As Kaelion and Nyvara rounded the corner into the Commercial Plaza, the world shifted from a burning wasteland to a jagged, crystalline nightmare. Towering pillars of black ice pierced through the asphalt, and the air was thick with a mist that tasted like old copper and frostbite.“I hate my life!” Kaelion yelled, his voice cracking as they skidded to a halt in front of a fallen barricade. “I really, really hate my life!”“Save the complaining for the afterlife!” Nyvara laughed, her silver hair whipping behind her as she scanned the carnage.“You said that already! It wasn't funny the first time!” Kaelion pointed a trembling finger at a twelve-foot-tall humanoid composed of translucent blue ice and hatred. “That’s a Frost Giant, Nyvara! A real one! Can you keep up, or do I need to carry you like a sack of mana-crystals?”“I’m keeping up!
