EVELYN

The air in the Crystal Ballroom smelled of lilies, champagne, and victory.

I smoothed the silk of my custom ivory gown and adjusted the thirty-carat diamond necklace Derek had sent to my suite that morning. Fifty television cameras and more than a hundred of the city's richest faces filled the rows below the stage. Above us hung a huge gold-stitched banner that said everything I had waited three years to see:

STRATEGIC ALLIANCE AND ENGAGEMENT: VANCE ENTERPRISES AND STERLING APEX

My mother, Clara, leaned into the microphone with a bright, proud smile.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," she said, her voice carrying under the crystal chandeliers. "Today our family is reborn. For three painful years, my daughter Evelyn was forced into a low, shameful marriage with an uneducated, penniless man, only to honor my late father's foolish dying wish."

A murmur ran through the press. The cameras moved closer to my sad, practiced face.

"But now," my mother said, lifting her chin, "justice and dignity have returned. Late last night, Evelyn ended things with that penniless parasite, Julian Hayes! Today we celebrate her future with a true giant of Emerald Bay society, Mr. Derek Sterling!"

The room burst into applause and flashing lights.

I leaned toward the microphone and let a graceful, winning smile touch my lips. "Julian simply could not rise to our level. I hold no anger toward him, but a woman must protect her family's legacy. The Sterling family has kindly agreed to put thirty million dollars into Vance Enterprises today, so our shipping lines can lead this coast."

In the front row, a reporter from the Emerald Financial Times stood up. "Miss Vance, if this alliance is official, why haven't Mr. Derek Sterling or his father come on stage yet? The signing was supposed to start fifteen minutes ago."

My mother's smile slipped for a moment, but she waved the question away. "Mr. Sterling is finishing an important takeover downtown. Real billionaires keep busy schedules. He will be here any second to sign the joint declaration."

BAM.

The heavy double doors at the back of the hall flew open.

"Ah! You see?" my mother crowed into the microphone, waving her arm. "Ladies and gentlemen, the heir to Sterling Apex!"

Her voice broke off.

Derek did not stride down the red carpet like a prince.

He stumbled in like a ghost, soaked in cold sweat. His shirt was torn at the collar and stained with dirt. His eyes darted around the room like a trapped animal's. Two officers from the State Commercial Bureau followed him at a slow, steady pace.

"Derek?" I stood up from my chair as a cold fear crept up my neck. "Derek, what is this? Why are you dressed like that in front of the press?"

Derek did not even look at me. His teeth were chattering so hard I could hear them from the stage.

Before anyone could understand what was happening, the doors opened again.

Two people walked in side by side.

On the left was Vivienne Croft, the untouchable Ice Queen of Emerald Bay. She wore a charcoal pantsuit and carried herself with total authority. Her cool hazel eyes swept over the hall like an empress looking over a crowd of servants.

On the right was Julian.

My breath stuck in my throat.

He wore a navy suit cut from cloth so dark and rich that it seemed to swallow the light. His back was straight, and his jaw looked carved from stone. The slouch of the obedient dockhand was gone. The quiet nobody who scrubbed my mother's floors was gone. In his place walked a man with the heavy, easy presence of a king.

The ballroom exploded.

"Is that Vivienne Croft?!"

"Who is that next to the Ice Queen?!"

"Wait, that face... isn't that Julian Hayes? The live-in husband Clara just called a parasite?!"

Camera flashes strobed like gunfire.

My mother turned red and gripped the podium until her knuckles went white. "Julian Hayes! Security! Where is hotel security?! How dare this beggar crash our private press conference!"

Seeing him beside Vivienne Croft set off a sharp, choking jealousy in my chest. Had he rented a designer suit with his divorce scraps just to pretend he was a man?

"Julian," I snapped into the microphone, desperate to take back control, "did you really rent a designer suit to come here and make a scene? Are you clinging to Miss Croft's coat to save your wounded pride? Derek is standing right there! If you don't crawl out of this hotel right now, the Sterling family will have you locked in a cell!"

JULIAN

I did not raise my voice. I did not need to.

"Is that so, Evelyn?"

My words were not loud, but they cut straight through the noise of the microphones.

I walked down the center aisle, and the reporters moved aside as if the sea were splitting. I did not look at Clara. I did not look at Evelyn's spotless ivory dress.

I stopped at the foot of the stage. My eyes found Derek Sterling, who stood five feet to my right, shaking like a leaf in a storm.

"Derek," I said calmly. "Your fiancée is waiting for your thirty-million-dollar check. Why don't you step up and sign it?"

VIVIENNEBy 7:30 PM, the storm clouds over Emerald Bay had turned the sky the color of a dark bruise. The parking garage under Croft Tower was cold, wide, and empty. The big exhaust fans hummed, and their sound bounced off the concrete pillars. Long shadows lay across the rows of expensive cars.I walked beside Julian, with four guards in plain suits around us.My phone had not stopped buzzing for two hours. The plan we made in the car had already landed its first hard hit. Three of Raymond Blackwood's biggest donors had promised twenty million dollars to his mayor campaign. Now they were getting sudden calls from their European banks demanding payment. Two of them had panicked and pulled their support before the evening news even aired."The judge handling Raven's hearing just moved it up to 9:00 PM," I told Julian, glancing at my tablet. "He got a quiet call from the State Judicial Committee. His family's secret bank account in the Bahamas was just flagged for a tax audit."Julian n

  • CHAPTER 17: BLACKWOOD'S THREAT

JULIANThe rain had washed the dirt off the stone steps of City Hall, but it had not cooled the fire in my chest.I stood beside the back door of the Maybach and watched the red and blue lights of Chief Dalton's police car fade down Government Boulevard. Raven was inside it. Handcuffed. Taken away like a street thug for protecting me from Blackwood's hired men.Behind me, the eight operators who had walked into the chamber stood in a quiet circle, their coats buttoned over their guns."Master Julian," Briggs, my head of security, said, stepping up to my shoulder. "We have twenty men around Central Booking. Give the word, and we stop the transport before it reaches the police garage. Nobody in this city has the firepower to stop Squadron Seven.""Stand down, Briggs," I said. My voice was quiet and even. "Blackwood staged all of this in front of fifty live cameras. If we break Raven out by force, we prove his lie. We become the foreign criminals he says we are, on prime-time TV. That is

  • CHAPTER 16: THE WARNING SHOT

VIVIENNEThe City Council Chambers were packed to the ceiling.Every local TV crew, city contractor, and news anchor had crammed into the grand, wood-paneled hall under the dome of City Hall. Behind the high oak stage sat the seven members of the Municipal Development Committee, but only one man ruled the room.Councilman Raymond Blackwood. At fifty-five, Blackwood looked like the perfect politician: neat silver hair, a sharp charcoal suit with a flag pin on the lapel, and the loud, practiced confidence of a man who owned the police, the courts, and the press. He leaned into the center microphone, and his voice rolled across the hall."Let me be completely honest with the people of Emerald Bay," Blackwood said, waving his hands at the cameras. "This morning, a predatory front company calling itself Skyward Holdings tried to take over our deep-water harbor using secret foreign money. We do not know who controls this company. We do not know where their billions came from."Blackwood pau

  • Chapter 15: THE DRAGON'S LEDGER

JULIAN The basement of the Old Customs House smelled of damp stone, motor oil, and old dust. It was built in 1920, right on the waterline of Emerald Bay's oldest wharf. Under its lowest floor lay a bunker wrapped in three feet of navy-grade steel: the Dragon Deposit Trust. There were no eye scanners, no keypads, and no cameras linked to the city network. An old clerk with thin white hair and wire glasses sat behind a heavy iron cage and studied my tarnished key under an antique lamp. "Box 001," the old man rasped, and his cloudy eyes lifted to my face. "Registered sixty years ago by the Ashcombe patriarch. Nothing taken out since October 18th, 2008." The night my parents died. "Bloodline check," the clerk muttered, and slid a brass needle and a glass plate across the counter. I took the needle, pricked my right index finger without flinching, and pressed one drop of blood onto the cold glass. The machine under the desk whirred. Chemicals hissed inside the counter as they compa

  • CHAPTER 14: SLEEPING ON CONCRETE

JULIANThe VIP recovery wing of St. Anselm's was silent except for the slow, steady beep of a heart monitor. The smell of old medicine had been replaced by the clean scent of fresh lilies. Two armed guards stood outside the frosted glass door of Room 304 with their hands resting on their holsters.Inside, Grandma Martha lay propped up on crisp Egyptian cotton pillows with a drip feeding her thin arm. Color had come back to her wrinkled cheeks. The dark bruise along her temple was neatly bandaged.I sat in the low armchair beside her bed and peeled an apple with a small silver knife."You were always terrible at sitting still, Julian," Martha rasped. Her voice was weak, but it still had the same warm, stubborn edge that had kept me alive on cold winter nights at her diner counter.A rare, real smile softened my face. I cut a slice of apple and handed it to her. "Eat, Grandma. Lawrence says your vitals are normal, but you need sugar."Martha took the slice and chewed slowly. Her gray ey

  • CHAPTER 13: BLOOD ON THE DOCKET

JULIANThe tarnished iron key felt cold in my palm.I ran my thumb over the double-headed dragon carved into the metal. Eighteen years ago, my parents died when the family freighter, the Ashcombe Horizon, exploded in the deep channel of Emerald Bay. The Coast Guard report blamed a gas leak in the engine room. My grandfather never believed it. He had sent me here to live in poverty for three years and called it a lesson in humility. But Old Master Vance's letter had just shown me the truth.I had not been sent here to learn patience. I had been sent here to dig up the grave of a murder."Raven," I said, and my voice cut through the quiet of the penthouse lounge."Sir?""This key belongs to an old mechanical lockbox. Where is this crest registered?"Raven leaned over the table and studied scans of the dragon mark on her tablet. Her fingers moved fast across the glass."It isn't from any bank in Emerald Bay," Raven said. "It's the mark of the Dragon Deposit Trust, a private vault under t
