JULIAN

Every camera in the Crystal Ballroom swung from me to Derek.

"Derek, darling, what is this peasant talking about?" Clara demanded. She hurried down the stage steps with a forced, shrill laugh for the journalists. "Put this rude stray in his place! Show the reporters the Sterling Group's check!"

Derek's knees gave out.

THUD.

He dropped to his hands and knees on the red carpet and pressed his forehead to the floor. He sobbed in front of fifty live cameras.

"Julian... Master Hayes... please!" Derek wailed, his tears mixing with the dust. "I'm begging you! Spare my father! Tell Skyward to unfreeze our accounts! We give up! We give up the harbor, we give up our licenses, we give up everything!"

The ballroom went so silent that you could hear the air vents humming overhead.

On stage, the microphone slipped in Evelyn's hand. "D-Derek? What are you doing? Why are you on your knees to him?!"

"Shut your mouth, you stupid woman!" Derek screamed, lifting his tear-streaked face to glare at her with pure hate. "You dragged me into this! You told me he was a homeless orphan! You swore he had no background! Because of you, Skyward called in all six hundred million dollars of our bonds at dawn! My father is bankrupt! The Sterling family is ruined!"

A roar of voices tore through the room.

Reporters shoved each other and shouted into their cameras. Live satellite feeds carried Derek Sterling's breakdown to every screen in Emerald Bay.

Clara clutched her throat, and her face went the color of ash. "B-bankrupt? The Sterling empire? Six hundred million?"

Beside me, Vivienne Croft took two calm steps up onto the stage. She adjusted the microphone, and her cool, clear voice brought instant silence.

"Let me explain the facts to the press," Vivienne said, her hazel eyes cutting through Evelyn. "As of 8:00 this morning, Croft Enterprises completed a partnership with Skyward Holdings, backed by two billion dollars in free cash. Also, all supply and business ties between Croft Enterprises and Vance Enterprises are now permanently cut."

Vivienne turned her head and looked at the frozen woman in the ivory dress.

"And the thirty-million-dollar lifeline you promised your lenders?" Vivienne let out a soft, mocking breath. "The lenders holding your family's debt were bought by Skyward ninety minutes ago. You are not getting thirty million, Miss Vance. You have twenty-four hours to pay seventy million in overdue debt, or the state marshals take your family home."

"No... no, that's impossible!" Clara shrieked. Her legs failed, and she fell against the press table. "Skyward is a national fund! They would never touch a penniless son-in-law! Julian is a street dog! My father picked him up out of pity!"

I did not answer her. I walked up the stage stairs.

The guards the Vance family had hired shrank back into the curtains. They kept their heads down and would not meet my eyes.

I stopped two feet from Evelyn.

EVELYN

When I looked up into Julian's eyes, the rest of the room seemed to fade to black.

For three years, this man had brought me tea every morning. He had washed my clothes and cleaned our house. He had taken my mother's slaps and insults without one word of complaint. I had thought he was a coward. I had thought he stayed because he had nowhere else to go.

Now I looked into his eyes and saw no anger. No love. No old hurt.

Only a deep, empty calm.

"Your grandfather was an honest man, Evelyn," Julian said. His voice was quiet and cold, like falling snow. "He knew who I was. He gave you the chance to stand above the whole world. But you could only see fool's gold."

Julian reached into his jacket and took out a small velvet box.

He set it on the glass podium between us. It landed with a soft, hollow click.

"The three-year debt of honor is paid," he said, and turned his back on me. "From this second on, the Vance name means nothing to me."

"Julian! Wait!"

Terror ripped through my chest. The thirty million was gone. My family faced seventy million in debt. The Sterlings were ruined. My whole world was falling apart.

I threw away every bit of pride I had left. In front of the flashing cameras, I lunged forward and reached for his navy sleeve. "Julian, it was all a misunderstanding! Derek tricked me! My mother pushed me to sign those papers! We were husband and wife for three years, Julian! You loved me! You can't just leave me like this!"

My fingers never touched his coat. A dark shape blocked my way.

Raven Blake's hand shot out with terrifying speed and clamped around my wrist like a steel trap. She twisted my arm back and forced me down onto my knees on the hard stage. Pain shot up my arm.

"Keep your dirty hands off Master Julian," Raven whispered, her voice flat and deadly. "You are not worthy to touch his shadow."

JULIAN

I did not turn around to watch Evelyn cry on the stage.

I walked down the center aisle, and Vivienne fell into step beside me without a word. We moved in perfect rhythm, as if we had done it a hundred times. Eight guards in plain suits formed an arrow around us and stepped right over Derek Sterling as he groveled on the floor. We walked out into the morning sun.

The moment the glass doors of the Grand Crown closed behind us, the burner phone against my chest buzzed.

I tapped my earpiece. "Report."

A grim, urgent voice from my European intelligence desk came through the secure line.

"Master Julian, we have a serious problem. Marcus Sterling did not go down with his company. He just boarded a fast private yacht at the south marina. And he has the access codes for Grandma Martha's medical life-support system."

VIVIENNEBy 7:30 PM, the storm clouds over Emerald Bay had turned the sky the color of a dark bruise. The parking garage under Croft Tower was cold, wide, and empty. The big exhaust fans hummed, and their sound bounced off the concrete pillars. Long shadows lay across the rows of expensive cars.I walked beside Julian, with four guards in plain suits around us.My phone had not stopped buzzing for two hours. The plan we made in the car had already landed its first hard hit. Three of Raymond Blackwood's biggest donors had promised twenty million dollars to his mayor campaign. Now they were getting sudden calls from their European banks demanding payment. Two of them had panicked and pulled their support before the evening news even aired."The judge handling Raven's hearing just moved it up to 9:00 PM," I told Julian, glancing at my tablet. "He got a quiet call from the State Judicial Committee. His family's secret bank account in the Bahamas was just flagged for a tax audit."Julian n

  • CHAPTER 17: BLACKWOOD'S THREAT

JULIANThe rain had washed the dirt off the stone steps of City Hall, but it had not cooled the fire in my chest.I stood beside the back door of the Maybach and watched the red and blue lights of Chief Dalton's police car fade down Government Boulevard. Raven was inside it. Handcuffed. Taken away like a street thug for protecting me from Blackwood's hired men.Behind me, the eight operators who had walked into the chamber stood in a quiet circle, their coats buttoned over their guns."Master Julian," Briggs, my head of security, said, stepping up to my shoulder. "We have twenty men around Central Booking. Give the word, and we stop the transport before it reaches the police garage. Nobody in this city has the firepower to stop Squadron Seven.""Stand down, Briggs," I said. My voice was quiet and even. "Blackwood staged all of this in front of fifty live cameras. If we break Raven out by force, we prove his lie. We become the foreign criminals he says we are, on prime-time TV. That is

  • CHAPTER 16: THE WARNING SHOT

VIVIENNEThe City Council Chambers were packed to the ceiling.Every local TV crew, city contractor, and news anchor had crammed into the grand, wood-paneled hall under the dome of City Hall. Behind the high oak stage sat the seven members of the Municipal Development Committee, but only one man ruled the room.Councilman Raymond Blackwood. At fifty-five, Blackwood looked like the perfect politician: neat silver hair, a sharp charcoal suit with a flag pin on the lapel, and the loud, practiced confidence of a man who owned the police, the courts, and the press. He leaned into the center microphone, and his voice rolled across the hall."Let me be completely honest with the people of Emerald Bay," Blackwood said, waving his hands at the cameras. "This morning, a predatory front company calling itself Skyward Holdings tried to take over our deep-water harbor using secret foreign money. We do not know who controls this company. We do not know where their billions came from."Blackwood pau

  • Chapter 15: THE DRAGON'S LEDGER

JULIAN The basement of the Old Customs House smelled of damp stone, motor oil, and old dust. It was built in 1920, right on the waterline of Emerald Bay's oldest wharf. Under its lowest floor lay a bunker wrapped in three feet of navy-grade steel: the Dragon Deposit Trust. There were no eye scanners, no keypads, and no cameras linked to the city network. An old clerk with thin white hair and wire glasses sat behind a heavy iron cage and studied my tarnished key under an antique lamp. "Box 001," the old man rasped, and his cloudy eyes lifted to my face. "Registered sixty years ago by the Ashcombe patriarch. Nothing taken out since October 18th, 2008." The night my parents died. "Bloodline check," the clerk muttered, and slid a brass needle and a glass plate across the counter. I took the needle, pricked my right index finger without flinching, and pressed one drop of blood onto the cold glass. The machine under the desk whirred. Chemicals hissed inside the counter as they compa

  • CHAPTER 14: SLEEPING ON CONCRETE

JULIANThe VIP recovery wing of St. Anselm's was silent except for the slow, steady beep of a heart monitor. The smell of old medicine had been replaced by the clean scent of fresh lilies. Two armed guards stood outside the frosted glass door of Room 304 with their hands resting on their holsters.Inside, Grandma Martha lay propped up on crisp Egyptian cotton pillows with a drip feeding her thin arm. Color had come back to her wrinkled cheeks. The dark bruise along her temple was neatly bandaged.I sat in the low armchair beside her bed and peeled an apple with a small silver knife."You were always terrible at sitting still, Julian," Martha rasped. Her voice was weak, but it still had the same warm, stubborn edge that had kept me alive on cold winter nights at her diner counter.A rare, real smile softened my face. I cut a slice of apple and handed it to her. "Eat, Grandma. Lawrence says your vitals are normal, but you need sugar."Martha took the slice and chewed slowly. Her gray ey

  • CHAPTER 13: BLOOD ON THE DOCKET

JULIANThe tarnished iron key felt cold in my palm.I ran my thumb over the double-headed dragon carved into the metal. Eighteen years ago, my parents died when the family freighter, the Ashcombe Horizon, exploded in the deep channel of Emerald Bay. The Coast Guard report blamed a gas leak in the engine room. My grandfather never believed it. He had sent me here to live in poverty for three years and called it a lesson in humility. But Old Master Vance's letter had just shown me the truth.I had not been sent here to learn patience. I had been sent here to dig up the grave of a murder."Raven," I said, and my voice cut through the quiet of the penthouse lounge."Sir?""This key belongs to an old mechanical lockbox. Where is this crest registered?"Raven leaned over the table and studied scans of the dragon mark on her tablet. Her fingers moved fast across the glass."It isn't from any bank in Emerald Bay," Raven said. "It's the mark of the Dragon Deposit Trust, a private vault under t
