Chapter 32

The penthouse suite of the Vanguard Council tower in the Capital City smelled of stale cigar smoke and panic.

Lord Castellano paced furiously in front of his massive mahogany desk. The old patriarch’s face was flushed a dangerous shade of crimson. He gripped his private cell phone so tightly his knuckles were white.

"What do you mean, my accounts are frozen?!" Castellano roared into the receiver, spittle flying from his lips. "I am a founding member of the Vanguard Reserve! I own the bank!"

"I'm terribly sorry, my Lord," the terrified bank manager stammered on the other end of the line. "The override didn't come from our end. The master security keys were used. Your liquid assets, your offshore accounts, your Cayman trusts... they’ve all been routed into a blank shell corporation. And, sir..."

"What?!" Castellano barked.

"The deed to this tower. It was digitally transferred thirty minutes ago. You are currently trespassing on private property."

Castellano hurled the phone across the room. It shattered against the bulletproof glass window.

The heavy mahogany doors of his office swung open. Victoria Sterling stepped inside. She wore a stunning charcoal pantsuit, holding a silver tablet in her perfectly manicured hands. She looked entirely serene.

"Having a rough morning, Castellano?" Victoria purred, closing the doors behind her.

"Victoria," the old man snarled, marching toward her. "Someone has hacked the Treasury! Vance is using some kind of supercomputer! We need to rally the other Patriarchs! We need to order a full kinetic strike on Valmont City!"

"The other Patriarchs are currently locked out of their penthouses," Victoria said smoothly. She tapped the screen of her tablet. "Their accounts are empty. Their private security details have been laid off. You see, Castellano, I didn't come here to rally you. I came here to finalize my resume."

Castellano stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes widened as the horrific reality of the situation washed over him. He looked at the silver tablet in her hand. He looked at her cold, shattered-ice eyes.

"You..." Castellano breathed out, his chest heaving. "You gave him the master keys. You sold us out to that vagrant!"

"He's not a vagrant," Victoria smiled, stepping closer, utterly unafraid of the furious old man. "He is the new god of this state. And I prefer to stand at the right hand of a god than babysit a room full of dying dinosaurs."

Castellano lunged at her, his hands extended like claws, aiming for her throat.

Victoria didn't even flinch. She simply sidestepped his clumsy attack, hooking her heel behind his ankle, and shoved him hard against his own mahogany desk. The old man collapsed, wheezing in pain.

"Pack your things, Castellano," Victoria whispered, looking down at him with absolute disdain. "You have one hour before Vance Corp security arrives to toss you into the street."

She turned and walked out of the office, tapping her earpiece. "Arthur. It's done. The Vanguard Council is utterly bankrupt. The deed to the tower is in your inbox."

Three hundred miles away, inside the Absolute Domain of the Apex Estate, Arthur Vance listened to Victoria’s report.

He sat in the subterranean vault, bathing in the blue light of the System interface.

"Excellent work, Victoria," Arthur replied, his voice echoing in the Capital City hallway through her earpiece. "Consider your trial period over. Welcome to Vance Corp."

He tapped the button to end the call.

Nyx spun around in her rolling chair, popping a pink bubble. "Boss, the Ice Queen actually did it. The Vanguard Council is entirely liquidated. But... we have a small complication."

"Define complication," Arthur said, crossing his arms.

"Before Victoria locked Castellano out of his accounts, the old man authorized a private jet. He sent a retrieval team to Valmont City," Nyx explained, her fingers dancing across phantom keyboards. "They picked up your ex-wife, Eleanor. They’re currently flying her back to the Capital City."

Vera, standing by the vault door, tilted her head. "Shall I shoot the plane out of the sky, Master?"

Arthur chuckled darkly. "No. Let Castellano keep her. It gives us a perfect excuse to visit the Capital in person."

Arthur pulled up the System interface. It was time to use his Level 3 privileges.

System, Arthur commanded. Open the Military-Tier Vanguard Summons. I need a siege engine.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed. He needed points. He needed to spend money immediately to fund his war machine.

He pulled out his phone and transferred fifty billion dollars from his endless reserves directly into the failing infrastructure of the Capital City’s poorest districts, instantly buying up hundreds of miles of real estate and commercial debt.

Ding.

Purchase Ares.

The vault literally shook. The concrete floor cracked under the sheer density of the mass materializing in the center of the room. It wasn't a shadow. It was a localized storm of kinetic energy and dark matter.

When the light faded, a towering behemoth of a man stood before Arthur.

Ares was six-foot-eight, clad in impossibly thick, matte-black tactical armor that looked like it belonged on a futuristic tank. His face was entirely obscured by a brutal, featureless ballistic mask with glowing crimson optics. He carried a massive, rotary rotary-barrel heavy machine gun effortlessly in one hand, as if it weighed nothing.

The giant dropped to one knee, the impact cracking the floor tiles. His voice sounded like grinding tectonic plates.

"Vanguard 'Ares' online. Awaiting targeting coordinates, Commander."

Arthur grabbed his charcoal suit jacket off the couch and slipped it on. He adjusted his blood-red tie, his eyes gleaming with infinite malice.

"Vera. Ares. Nyx," Arthur commanded, his Aura of the Sovereign making the very air in the vault hum with tension. "Get the jet ready. We are going to the Capital."

He tossed the fading, useless shaft of the Spear of Genesis aside. The magnetic casing dissolved into violet dust before it hit the marble balcony."Vera! Hyperion!" It looked like a jagged wound in reality, bleeding a deep, terrifying violet light. From the rift, the weapon descended. It wasn't a gun. It didn't have a trigger or a stock. It was a six-foot-long javelin composed entirely of condensed, swirling anti-matter encased in a shifting magnetic field. It hummed with a low, bone-rattling frequency that made the hair on everyone’s arms stand on end.Arthur stepped forward and reached out."Master, do not touch it!" Vera warned, taking a rare step backward, her instincts screaming that the weapon was anathema to biological life.Arthur ignored her. It was a lightless, frozen void where human ambition went to die.Arthur Vance wasn’t human anymore. He stood on the bridge of the Abyssal Leviathan, a deep-sea exploration vessel he had purchased from the Level 5 System Store for an effortless half-million SP. The ship was constructed from self-repairing dark matter and propelled by a frictionless gravity drive. It descended through the pitch-black water at terrifying speeds.Ares stood like a monolith at the back of the bridge, his red optics cutting through the dim cabin lighting. Nemesis hovered near the navigation console, her shadow-wrapped form completely unbothered by the crushing depths outside the viewport. Vera stood directly beside Arthur, her hand resting on her combat blade out of pure habit."Depth: thirty-five thousand feet," the ship’s automated AI reported in a smooth, synthetic voic
