Alex asked his men to take Terence hostage and clear the mess at the nightclub. They left through the back door, and Bobby parted ways with a promise, swearing to get the dirt on Tyrell Jameson.

Benjamin was still unsure of the best course of action. Having seen Alex shoot Bobby and his henchmen without a hint of hesitation, he had realized that Alex wasn’t a mere businessman.

Right now, Benjamin was more Terrified of Alex than the Mancuso family. And since he had already divulged too many secrets, he knew he wasn’t safe in Nexus anymore.

However, leaving the city wasn’t an option, since he was also a part of the ongoing investigations regarding Felicia Rashford’s accident.

After a great deal of back-breaking thinking, he finally decided to take his chances with Alex.

“Please let me come with you. I swear I won’t snitch on you again.”

Alex stopped in his tracks, but didn’t turn around. “You can come with me, but you will have to earn your keep.”

“How?” Benjamin asked.

In accordance with the rules, Lateesha had been notified about all the witnesses long ago. However, she still hadn’t done her research on Cynthia, as she had been confident about wrapping things up with Tony Montoya’s testimony. However, the mechanic’s criminal confession held little value now after Enrico’s sudden demonstration. The judge ordered the police to take Tony back into custody and interrogate him further to learn the truth. At the same time, Cynthia’s arrival in the court as a technical expert tipped the scales in Alex’s favor.“Ms. Cynthia Jones works as a full-time Research and Development Supervisor at Electra Mobility Solutions. Thus, she has sufficient knowledge to serve as a technical expert and throw light on the car crash,” Enrico informed the judge before asking Cynthia to take her place in the witness stand.Although Cynthia knew that getting involved in this case would compel her to spill her secrets and most probably cost her the job she loved so much, she was

  • 137. Irrefutable Evidence

Tony Montoya, the rugged-looking mechanic, stood up from the third row, and Lateesha smirked, already believing that she had won the case.In her mind, there was absolutely no way Alex could wiggle his way out of this snare once the mechanic’s testimony revealed that he had been an accomplice in this murder.“Mr. Montoya, please take your stand in the witness box,” the judge instructed.Once Tony had sworn on the Bible, Lateesha began, straight and direct.“Mr. Montoya, do you know the accused who is sitting here in this courtroom today?” she asked.“Of course, I do. That is Alex Verlaine. The same guy who threatened to kill my family if I didn’t help him do his dirty deed,” Tony replied, frowning at Alex. “I’d say he should be hanged till death. That guy’s a damn menace to society!”The raw emotions moved the crowd, but the judge intervened to restore order.“Please only answer what is being asked. The court will decide what to do with Mr. Verlaine, not you. So kindly refrain from ha

As the hearing began, the judge turned to Lateesha first, and she stood up to address him.“Your Honor, I will be replacing Malone Sanders as the new public prosecutor. My colleague is unwell and cannot continue,” she said with a commanding arrogance in her voice.“Very well,” the judge replied. “Please continue.”Lateesha pointed at Alex while still facing the judge. “Your Honor, the accused, Mr. Alex Verlaine, tried to earn the public sympathy by pleading police harassment last time. But now that he has enjoyed the open air, I am sure he is finally ready to face the music. I would like to call him to the witness stand.”On the judge’s order, Alex stood up and made his way to the witness stand, where he swore on the Bible and promised to speak the truth.Lateesha looked him dead in the eye and asked, “Mr. Verlaine, how long were you and Ms. Felicia Rashford married?”“Three years and 2 months,” Alex replied.Lateesha raised an eyebrow and smirked. “Would you be so kind as to tell the

  • 135. A latent threat

Bobby Mancuso’s brutal death shocked the whole Mancuso family, leaving Nexus city rattled by the evening news.Alex knew that things would have turned out differently if he hadn’t decided to use Bobby as his pawn in this game. In a way, he blamed himself for Bobby’s tragic fate.Terence Mancuso, however, knew exactly who was behind this and swore to avenge his cousin.Hearing the morbid news, Enrico advised Alex to immediately cut all ties with the crypto mafia, warning him of the dire consequences if the prosecutor found out about his recent activities. That night, Alex returned to the hotel and set up a conference call with his associates.Elizabeth, Jakob, Benjamin and Cynthia were all on the line.“Enrico advised me to stay silent about what happened, but I think you deserve to know. Bobby Mancuso was murdered in broad daylight, and the killer left a warning note on his body. We are swimming in dangerous waters now.”“It must have been one of Tyrell’s men,” Jakob muttered angrily.

With less than 12 hours remaining for the next hearing, Alex met up with Cynthia, Elizabeth, and Jakob at his lawyer’s new office on the outskirts of Nexus City.“How is the decryption coming up?” he asked Cynthia.“It’s almost done. I think I’ll have all the service data ready for viewing by evening,” she replied.“And you’re sure it would help in my trial?”Cynthia nodded. “If what I am thinking is correct, then we can blow that mechanic’s story about the cooling system out of the sky. I just need a few more hours to confirm my suspicion.”Alex acknowledged her hard work and then turned to Jakob. “Have you managed to find any leads on the Tesler Service Center where Felicia last visited with her car? Any leads on the staff?”Jakob shook his head dejectedly. “I tried my best. I really did. But the staff seem to have vanished into thin air. I even asked around, but barely anyone was willing to talk.”Although Alex was a bit disappointed by this loose end, he didn’t ponder too much upo

Lateesha Crawford was a name that had appeared several times on the front pages of the most popular news articles and electronic papers. She wasn’t just any lawyer, but among the most corrupt public prosecutors in the city.Alex knew his trial would only get more difficult with Lateesha poking her nose in the matter. However, one thing he didn’t understand was why the government lawyer had been changed so suddenly, especially just a day before the next hearing. It all pointed toward the involvement of an influential figure who wanted to keep Alex tied to the courtroom.“Mr. Verlaine, are you there?” Enrico’s voice repeated from the other side.Alex pulled his head out of his troubled thoughts and asked, “Do you know Lateesha personally?”“I don’t,” Enrico replied. “But I have analyzed a few of her past hearings. She is quite vivacious and has a penchant for twisting the truth by manipulating witnesses and finding innovative ways to trap the accused.”Alex listened carefully before ask
