The dusty dagger glinted in the air as the shaman raised it menacingly above his head. His lips curved into a freakish grin as something primal exploded in his eyes, driving him past devotion.

Yelling like a crazed fanatic, he swung his bony arms with all his might, aiming to plunge the dagger into Alex’s heart.

“Malsumis, I offer you the blood of the lamb!”

Alex watched as the blade rushed toward him, spearing through the air like a viper’s fangs.

It was just inches away from his chest when Alex pulled his frayed rope binds apart and smacked the shaman in the head with a stone he had grabbed from the ground.

The sudden blow cracked the shaman’s skull open, killing him instantly.

While the shaman was chanting his prayers, Alex had used the distraction to grab a sharp, flat-edged stone from the ground and slowly chisel away at his bindings until the ropes were almost ready to give in.

Without breaking character, he had waited for the other tribesmen to leave before breaking free when t

Three hours later, Alex opened his eyes to the crackling of wood and found himself staring at an open flame that blazed inches from his face.“Look who is finally awake,” a familiar voice buzzed in his ears.Alex inhaled sharply, breathing in the earthy aroma. His throat felt dry, like he had just swallowed sand, and his lips were parched and swollen.“Where am I?” he grunted in a groggy voice as he tried to get up. “What the hell is going on?”But his hands were tied behind his back, and his feet knotted together with dry vines.“Relax, Whip Cracker,” the same voice echoed again. “You have passed all your trials. And now it is time to accept your just reward.”Alex recognized Holata’s voice even though his cloudy vision barely allowed him to make out the facial features of the man standing before him.Still dizzy and reeling, Alex was barely holding himself together as he struggled to awaken from his daze.“Why…am I here?” he mumbled, his voice barely above a groggy whisper. “What…di

  • 206. Trial of Wisdom

Alex had spent his whole life sacrificing everything, whether it be for his family or his nation. And another sacrifice would mean nothing more than a drop in that same bucket.Holata’s cryptic words echoed in the hazy darkness, as the gray incense swirled upward, and the face of the tribe’s revered deity stared at Alex. The totem stood stock-still, but the flames dancing around it dazzled the eyes of the ancient guardian carved into the wood, its hollow eyes swirling with darkness.Alex had always been against such cryptic rituals, but he realized the tribe’s faith was tied to these ancient traditions.Knowing the stakes at play, Alex understood he had to honor their customs to truly win their trust and be accepted as an ally.“Fine, I’ll offer my blood to your guardian,” he declared before slicing his palm open with the ceremonial dagger kept on the altar before him.As the blood dripped onto the clay bowl, the flames shot up, and the room brightened with a sudden warmth that made t

By killing the beast that had been hunting their sheep, Alex had earned the title of the monster slayer and cemented his place in the tribe as a true warrior. However, amidst all the praises and shouts of victory, Alex found his mind wandering to a darker place. The beast he had just killed wasn’t any ordinary brown bear.Alex had encountered Grizzlies in the wild before, but there was something seriously wrong with this one.For one, the bear had no reason to enter human territory and start ambushing livestock when it had plenty of food in the wild.Secondly, since it was already November, it was time for most bears to start hibernating. Yet, this lone Grizzly was actively hunting prey instead of slumbering inside a cave to escape the cold. But what bothered Alex the most was the fact that this bear’s skin looked rotten, and it had shown far more fearlessness and resilience than other predators prowling the wild.Alex was still lost in deep thought when Nashoba’s voice disrupted him

It wasn’t fear that made Alex tremble. The tremors that shook his whole body were neither natural nor expected.Recollecting his recent conversation with Dr. Lucy, he quickly realized that this was most probably a side effect of the adulterated God Serum, which was still in his system. As Alex’s heart raced inside his chest, his breathing turned ragged and sporadic, and he could barely keep his nerves under control.Meanwhile, the diseased brown bear snarled at him and bared its fangs as a final warning before lowering its head and charging straight toward him.Alex clenched the knife tighter than ever and stood his ground, his legs spread wide and his hands stretched outward to make him appear much bigger than he was.The hungry bear pulled back barely a couple of feet away from Alex, abruptly breaking its charge, and growled at him.Alex had read the beast perfectly.Despite weighing almost 600 pounds and possessing the most formidable claws and fangs, the bear was still wary of its

  • 203. Trial of Strength

The last time Alex had gone hunting was five years ago, during a training mission with Captain Williams. But things were completely different now. Not only was he unarmed, save for the knife strapped to his waist, but also without any backup.Streams of moonlight filtered through the fleecy gray clouds as Chayton led Alex through the corn fields and brought him to the open green pastures on the other side. The cool breeze kissing Alex’s neck felt exhilarating, as the wind carried with it the fragrance of juniper berries and the mild scent of rain-soaked earth.“A great beast roams these lands. It is a ghost that disappears during the day but emerges from the shadows at night,” Chayton spoke in a prophetic voice and pointed at the trees and thicket up ahead. “The beast lurks in the shadows and stalks its prey, waiting for the perfect chance to strike. Be wary and listen to your instincts if you want to survive.”Alex scanned the area and asked, “What kind of beast is it? A wolf?”“The
