Charlotte expected to be met with cold hostility and was prepared to use her feminine charms to soften Alex up, just enough to get him to listen.

But instead of pushing her away, Alex welcomed her like an old acquaintance.

“I was expecting you. Just didn’t think you’d show up so soon.”

“I know you hate me, but I just need you to hear—”

Charlotte stopped midway, stumped by Alex’s calm acceptance. She was prepared to face his wrath, and couldn’t figure out why he seemed so calm.

“You were?” she mumbled softly. “But why? I was the one who first aired the news about the cancer patients. It all started from my channel…the Weekly Buzz.”

Alex merely smiled at her and held the passenger door of his car open.

“I believe such matters should not be discussed out in public. Please get in, and we can continue this conversation.”

Looking at Alex’s unusually calm behavior, Charlotte hesitated. She simply couldn’t read a single thought behind those hazel eyes, and it made her increasingly nervous.

As morning dawned on Glenmonte the next day, a sleepless Henry Pietersen checked his phone for the thirteenth time. He had been calling Charlotte since last night, but she seemed to have disappeared without a trace.Neither was she answering her calls nor responding to any texts or emails.“Come on. You just had one God damn job to do,” Henry muttered, still staring impatiently at his screen as if it would miraculously cause a new message to pop open. “You can’t rely on anyone these days. Freaking lousy slackers all around me!”As the day went by, things only went from bad to worse with more terrible news flooding in from all corners.By evening, Henry was thoroughly agitated by the news buzzing on the TV, showing his oil farms being overrun by native American protestors. He called the chief of police a third time to fix the issue.“It’s been seven hours now! Get these pests off my land!” he barked into the phone. But the weary chief replied in the negative.“We already did that once.

Charlotte’s throat dried up as she stared at the bruised men tied to the chairs. She could see her own dark future as she looked at them, and it made her shudder at the thought.“So, what do you think, Ms. Harrison?” Alex reiterated. “Have you weighed the pros and cons of sticking with Henry, or would you want me to repeat?”Charlotte wanted to speak, but words failed her.Alex snapped his fingers, and immediately two of his guards dragged the captives away, into a lightless secret room behind the wall on the other side.“Come now. Let me get you a drink.”Alex escorted Charlotte with the civility of a perfect host and led her to the drawing room, where she cautiously found her seat on a couch. But her eyes remained glued to the guards standing around.“I think the men are making you uncomfortable. I don’t like that.”Alex snapped his fingers again, and the guards left the room, leaving them alone.A maid dressed in a neat black skirt and white top, complete with a frilly apron, stepp

All eyes in the room turned to Alex as the reporters waited impatiently, and the cameras snapped behind them like excited seagulls.Alex stood up from his seat with the confidence of a man who knew he had already won the battle even before it began.“I want to regain the trust of the people of Alexandria. And I believe the best way to do it is through a personal demonstration,” he said, taking off his coat and folding his right sleeve up to his elbow.Curious eyes stared fixedly at him as the eager reporters tried to figure out what he was planning to do.Alex walked under the spotlight and pulled out a surgical scalpel. Then, completely unexpectedly, he used the scalpel on his own arm, slicing straight up to his elbow and shocking the crowd. As blood dripped from the slit on his arm, some of the reporters shrieked while others called out for help. But Alex assured them everything was fine.“There is no need to panic. I just want to show that I have complete faith in our product.”A n

Henry had used his connections not only to influence the media to spin false narratives about the healing gels but also to manipulate the different medical stores and clinics so that they banned Derma Heal from their shelves. As Kronos Tech’s name was dragged through the dirt, the public outrage caused an even larger fallout, and its ripples were felt all across Glenmonte.People not only refused to use the new healing gels, but also started raising questions about all other serums and medications developed by the same company.Throughout the day, the panic selling continued, and Kronos Tech’s share prices plummeted 25% before the fall was finally arrested by new inflows.Sitting back in his cushioned armchair, Henry was enjoying the carnage when the graph changed suddenly.Within a matter of seconds, Kronos Tech’s stock price stabilized, and the line on the graph shot upward, rocketing above the opening price and instantly turning green.Henry’s expression changed from mildly annoyed

Alex was surrounded from all sides as an angry mob of infuriated protestors thronged to his SUV while reporters crowded around like vultures. The flashes from the cameras nearly blinded his driver as clicks and snaps lit up the windows, adding further fuel to the fire.“Don’t stop. Just keep driving!” Alex ordered. After a slow crawl, the car finally managed to reach the gate, where the cops and the private security agents managed to push the crowd back and escort them to safety. But all the noise came back at once, erupting in a furious uproar as soon as Alex stepped out of the SUV and headed up the stairs.“Mr. Verlaine, how could your company be so careless with the testing?”“Do people’s lives have no value?”“How are you going to compensate those who contracted skin cancer?”“Can people still trust in Kronos Tech? Or has it all become a part of its new strategy under you?”The same crowd that had once cheered for his announcement a week ago was now out on a witch hunt, ready to b
