At seven fifty sharp, the jockeys accompanied their horses to their respective lanes and waited at the starting line.

Meanwhile, a middle-aged man with back-brushed black hair stood atop a raised platform, inside a wooden enclosure. There was a microphone in front of him and a stack of papers on the podium.

Soon, all the members of the Grid Iron club started arriving, quickly filling the stands around the race track.

Theodore Smith and Arthur Cromwell arrived by carriage while Malcolm Browning accompanied Blake on horseback.

“That was really refreshing. One should always go out for rides in the morning. Good for the heart, you know?” Blake said, reining his horse to the side and climbing down cautiously. “You know, if I didn’t hail from the illustrious Warrington family, I might have become a horse jockey myself,” he boasted, showing off his riding skills.

But Malcom Browning had seen enough over the years to know he was just a kid with an obnoxiously large mouth.

For now, Alex decided to lie low instead of doing anything rash. Henry Pietersen and the mayor could wait while he dealt with the cops and cleared his name in this messy investigation.Samantha Atkins was already handling the business end of affairs in Glenmonte, and Rachel Dawson was there to prevent any collateral damage and keep him updated about any changes in the weather.Meanwhile, Alex was planning on staying out of the public eye and stopping this matter from escalating any further. Thus, even though he wanted to do things more proactively, this time he had to rely upon pulling his strings from afar instead of taking the bull by the horns.Cynthia met up with Jakob at a private library, and there they discussed how to handle the matter most effectively. After a detailed conversation, they eventually decided the smartest way to go about clearing Alex’s name from the list of suspects was by launching a private investigation and finding their own evidence to solve the puzzle. At

  • 111. A second chance?

Alex always believed everyone deserved a second chance. Another opportunity to leave the past behind and start afresh. But over the last few days, he had learned the hard way that trusting old snakes never ended well.Still, the fact that Jakob had called Enrico to bail him out of trouble moved him, making him ponder Jakob’s request. However, it felt a little too strange to discuss a position in Femme Fatale when Jakob’s sister and mother had just recently died in a tragic car crash. It was almost as if he was barely affected by his great loss and only wanted to get back on his feet.Seeing Alex standing there, lost in thought, Jakob spoke again to clear the air.“I know what you must be thinking. Felicia and my mother just died, and here I am begging you to take me back into the fold. It’s not like I don’t feel their loss. But if I walk away from the family business permanently, it will mean I have abandoned everything that my father built. I only want to carry his legacy forward, ev

  • 110. An unlikely ally

Sergeant Doherty wasn’t the kind to let someone else dictate terms to him inside his own police station, but Enrico’s reputation as an uncompromising lawyer preceded him. Thus, despite his unwillingness, the Sergeant was compelled to release Alex.“You are one lucky man, Mr. Verlaine. Who would have thought that your lawyer would show up here without any notice?” he grumbled. “You are free to go.”“This isn’t over. You will hear from me shortly,” Enrico warned with an air of condescension. “Officers like you give the department a bad name, but I will make sure that you remember where the real power lies.”Sergeant Doherty kept his calm and smiled. “I am sure you will. I don’t know the laws as well as you, but all your knowledge will be useless once we find the proper evidence against Mr. Verlaine.”“Then you'd best get to work right away without wasting your time harassing my client,” Enrico snapped back at him. “Good night, officer. We are done here.”Alex kept quiet and followed Enr

Once again, Alex found himself in the thick of things. And the police technician’s discovery about the tampering only made the situation worse.“Sit down, Mr. Verlaine. We are going to have a long discussion now,” Sergeant Doherty instructed in his gruff voice, pulling out a chair for Alex.“You can’t do this to me. There is absolutely no reason for you to label me as a suspect,” Alex muttered back, standing defiantly in his space.“Don’t refuse a direct order. I won’t be so polite next time,” Sergeant Doherty grumbled, fixing his searing gaze on Alex. “Sit down and cooperate unless you want me to throw you behind bars.”“I don’t think Alex was involved in this. You’ve got the wrong man,” Jakob protested, desperate to put an end to this tense situation. But Sergeant Doherty refused to budge.“Your valuable opinion has been noted. But you are free to leave,” he replied. “I know how to do my work, so please do not interfere.”On the Sergeant’s orders, a couple of junior officers escorted

  • 108. Mounting Suspicion

The next morning, Alex sat down in front of his laptop with a cup of freshly brewed dark-roasted coffee and started putting all the scattered pieces together, trying to find any leads he could.Felicia’s car was on the way to Nexus City, but it crashed on the Avilon bridge before falling into the Georgetta River.Alex highlighted three important locations: the bridge, the river, and the city that lay ahead.Along with these three locations, there were also three incidents leading to the tragic mishap: a sudden fiery explosion that caught Felicia off guard, the resulting navigational failure, leading to the car crashing into the stone railings, and finally, the vehicle falling into the river. There were multiple factors to be considered when determining the true cause of the accident, but one thing was crystal clear: there was something wrong with their vehicle. As Alex was trying to gather the pieces of missing information, his phone rang, and that same dreaded name flashed on its scr

  • 107. A ghost from the past

At six in the evening, Cynthia walked out of Electra Mobility’s main office building and got back in her car. But just before she could drive off, her assistant handed her a flash drive along with the laptop she had forgotten inside her cabin.Alex watched from the third floor of the shopping mall, noting the number on the car and marking it with a tracking dart from his state-of-the-art surveillance watch.“I’m sorry it has to be this way, Cynthia. But I really need your help to sort out my mess again.”Back inside the car, Cynthia leaned back and took off her glasses before wiping her face with a wet tissue. She was tired from her hectic shift and didn’t want to look at another screen for the rest of the night.“Straight to home, madame?” the driver asked from the front seat.Cynthia breathed a sigh and parted her dry lips. “No. I need to pick up some food first. I'm not in the mood to cook anymore. Head to the closest Asian drive-through. I am thinking about trying some Chinese toni
