Alex strolled across the backyard, taking a deep breath of the fresh morning air as he planned his next move. The race track had seven lanes and ran for 2 miles, looping around a little pond and a distant mound.

The race was due to start in half an hour, and the caretakers and curators were already out there, setting up hurdles and sweeping away the stray branches and dead leaves from the track.

Walking down the narrow, muddy path, Alex turned to the left and headed for the stables where the horses were being prepped.

There were a total of five stallions and a lone mare.

Alex took a good look at the Black Dwarf, a stout and heavy-set stallion, and approached its jockey.

“That’s a fine horse you got there, friend.”

Hearing the unexpected voice, the jockey turned around and looked Alex up and down.

“You look surprised,” Alex said, approaching the horse and running his hand across its side.

“None of the elites are too fond of getting their boots dirty, so barely anyone comes up to the sta

Beads of cold sweat appeared on Oliver’s forehead as he felt a shiver run along his spine. The sharp steel pressed against his throat made his mouth dry up as he tried to speak.“I…don’t know what you are…ta…talking about. There must be some mis…misunderstanding,” he mumbled, trying to squirm his way out of trouble with a sniveling lie.But Alex wasn’t buying his act of innocence.“Kenneth and Barry already spilled all the beans. It is not nice to lie to your elders,” he whispered, pressing the knife so firmly against Oliver’s throat that it nicked his skin.As blood trickled from the shallow cut and stained Oliver’s collared white shirt, he panicked, and his breathing turned ragged and sporadic.“I…am not…the guy you’re looking…for. They lied…to you. I didn’t do anything!”“Let’s try this again!” Alex’s voice boomed from behind as the blade flashed in his hand, moving sharply against Oliver’s cheek and leaving another gash on his skin.“Argh! My face!” Grabbing his bleeding cheek wit

Alex’s plan to lure the Brotherhood out by offering a contract on Dan Horowitz was already in motion. However, he was pretty sure by now that it wasn’t a single person pulling the strings from behind the curtains. The first lead, Oliver Martinez, was already on his mind. And he knew exactly where to find him.Alex looked at his watch and saw it was almost 3 am. He only had a narrow window to catch up to Oliver before he returned home from the nightclub.“Oliver Martinez, the little black sheep of the Martinez family. I think it’s time we finally got to know each other more personally.”Alex picked up his phone again and reached out to the police sergeant whose team had arrested the biker crew. All of them except Kenneth and Barry were still in the lockup, and their bikes had been confiscated as well.“Sergeant, I need to talk to one of your delinquents. Put me on the line with the girl.”The Sergeant did as instructed, and the next voice Alex heard was Maven’s.“He…hello?” she stutter

Kenneth frowned at Alex, his fingers tightly clenched into fists as he shook with suppressed rage.“What the hell are you talking about?” he snapped. “Do we look dead to you?”“No, but you soon will be,” Alex replied with an unnerving calm as he texted someone on his phone.By now, Barry had realized what was happening and turned pale as a ghost. He looked from one smirking face to another before finally turning to Alex.“You can’t be serious. You are no killer. You are a God damn businessman!” he cried in a quivering voice.Alex turned to look at him and replied with clinical cruelty, “You are right. I am a businessman. And you crossed the line by hurting my business. Now, it’s time I made you pay for my losses.”“What the hell are you two going on about?” Kenneth muttered, still clueless about what was about to transpire.“He is trying to get us killed. These cops are in on this as well!” Barry filled in, shaking all over.It was then that Kenneth got the whole picture, and it made

Alex glanced at his speedometer and realized that, despite slowing down a bit, Kenneth was still going well over 150 miles per hour. The Nelson Tunnel was barely 2 miles away, down the winding uphill path, and there was no way he was going to catch up to Kenneth before he was already inside the tunnel.“Alex! Are you even listening?” Zachary cried out again, his voice nearly breaking as he strained his vocal cords. “Stop while you still can! There will be no coming back if you get inside that tunnel!”“Thank you for the heads-up. The race is almost over,” Alex replied with unnatural calm before disconnecting and dialing up the previous speed dial number. “We have a problem here. Kenneth’s headed for the Nelson tunnel. It’s time to step up.”“Our cars are still far away. We won’t be able to get there on time,” a concerned voice replied from the other end.“Then it’s time for plan B. Go in with everything. We need to stop Kenneth before he kills himself!”Up ahead, Kenneth was having th

“You really shouldn’t be doing this!” Zachary’s voice buzzed in Alex’s ear over the wireless headphones he was wearing. “There is still time to back out. Kenneth and Barry are reckless idiots, but you’re not. This race is madness!”“Thank you for your concern, Zach. But I must do it, even if it is madness,” Alex replied before disconnecting the wireless.Beside him, Kenneth revved the Superleggera, throttling up while holding the clutch. The tires burned on the asphalt, spewing out gray smoke like a chimney.“Now this is what real power feels like. Let’s see if you’re as good a biker without your own bike!”Alex ignored the remark and leaned forward, narrowing his eyes on the highway ahead.“Just focus, Ken!” Barry sniped, fixing his gaze on the towel in Maven’s hand.Maven took a deep breath and finally unclasped her fingers, dropping the towel in the middle of the road.“Go! Go! Go!”Even before the towel could hit the ground, all three bikers whizzed past her, speeding up the slopi

  • 256. Hell’s Highway

Shocked gasps escaped from the lips of the other bikers as they heard Kenneth’s suicidal plan.Hell’s Highway was the name assigned to the nightmarish stretch of highway 19C that ran from Glenmonte to Cobalt Cove, which was notorious for accidents.Over the last two years, 25 bikers had lost their lives on Hell’s Highway, with some ending up under the wheels of pickup trucks and others skidding off the road and smashing their heads into the ragged fields flanking the highway.Highway 19C was riddled with speed breakers, concrete barricades and was almost always under the radar of police patrol cars. But that wasn’t even the worst part.Any biker brave or stupid enough to race on Hell’s Highway had to dive headfirst into incoming traffic since it became a special one-way road after midnight.Just the very thought of getting down on the highway made Maven turn pale.“Yo, Kenneth. You are taking this too far, dude. You already got the Superleggera. You can beat Lex on any of our normal t
