Chapter 50

Chapter Topic: Day One, Again

Ryatt's POV

The scratching came again, slow and deliberate, like a question.

I swung my legs off the cot. The Restraint skill purred at the base of my skull, smoothing every jagged thought into something soft and forgettable. *Go back to sleep. It's only a stray.*

I looked at the ink on my palm.

**DON'T HIT HIM. FIND WREN.**

I didn't remember writing it. The handwriting was too small and too rushed to be mine, and yet the pressure of the pen had cut deep

Chapter 51The Lighthouse That Wasn't ThereRyatt's POVThe grass gave way to pebbles, and the pebbles gave way to a strip of gray sand that squeaked under my boots like something alive. Wren trotted ahead, nose low, ears flicking at every gust. Mira walked at my shoulder, her arms wrapped around herself, staring at the water."It's too quiet," she said. She was right. The sea moved, but it made no sound. Waves curled up the shore and slid back without a hiss or a splash, as if someone had muted the world. Far out, the lighthouse stood against a sky the color of dishwater, its beam sweeping slowly across the mist."It's not a real sea," I said."How can you tell?""Because it's tidy." I crouched and let a wave run over my fingers. It was cold and wet and perfectly ordinary, yet the water left no salt on my skin. "Everything in this town is tidy. The birds, the cars, the people. Nothing here is allowed to be messy. Except this.""Except this," Mira murmured. "The one place he forgot to

Someone had wanted this message to survive the night.I crossed the room and opened the door. The dog sat on the gravel in the early light, ribs showing under a patchy gray-brown coat, both ears notched, one eye clouded with an old scar. He didn't wag his tail. He simply looked at me, and the look went through me like a nail.I knew those eyes. I couldn't say from where."You're not supposed to be here," I said hoarsely. "I haven't seen you before."The dog's lip twitched.

Chapter 49Chapter Topic: The Cage Wants to Be StruckRyatt's POVThe second hand swept backward, faster with every pass, and the room began to come apart at the edges. The whiteboard bled gray. The desks lost their corners. The twelve students kept humming that same four-note tune, their mouths barely moving, and the sound pressed against my ears until my teeth ached."Ryatt!" Mira screamed. "Whatever you're going to do, do it now!"My arm was already rising. The wrench felt perfect in my grip, balanced like a service pistol, and my body knew the angle without being told. Left temple. Short arc. One strike and a man in a cardigan would be on the floor.Sterling stood perfectly still, hands open at his sides, waiting. He wasn't afraid. He looked relieved.*Hit me,* he'd said. *Let's see what breaks first.*Something cold slid down my spine, and for once it wasn't the Restraint skill. It was the memory of a hospital corridor. I'd watched Captain Easton lunge at that gargoyle with every

That was the worst part. Everything in this town looked harmless.I stopped at the edge of the parking lot, the wrench hidden against my back. Mira stood beside me, her small shoulders rigid. The Guardian pressed against her leg, his notched ears pinned flat, a low rumble vibrating in his chest."You said the school was three blocks from the garage," I said quietly. "It took us twenty minutes to get here.""Time stretches," Mira said. "The closer you get to the Architect, the harder the loop fights you."I flexed my fingers. Back in the ruined city, I used to feel the system humming under my skin like a second heartbeat. Lesser Healing Factor knitting my bones. Shadow Leap coiled in my legs like a spring. High Luck whispering that the next corner would be safe. Here, there was only silence,

  • Chapter 47

Ryatt’s povThe heat shimmered off the asphalt of the main road, a hazy distortion that made the small town look like it was melting. I stood at the edge of the junkyard, my hands shoved deep into the pockets of my grease-stained coveralls. Something was different today. The air felt heavy, charged with a static I hadn't felt since I woke up in this "peaceful" reality. Then I saw her.A girl, no older than fifteen, trudged down the center of the road. She wore a tattered hoodie and jeans covered in the dust of a long journey. Her hair was a matted mess, and she moved with a limp that spoke of miles she shouldn't have been able to walk. But it was her face—younger than I remembered, softer, yet carrying eyes that had seen the end of all things."Mira?" I whispered, my voice cracking. She stopped. Her head snapped up, her eyes locking onto mine. There was no blue core glowing in her chest, no supernatural aura radiating from her skin. She looked like a normal, exhausted kid. "Ryatt?" s
