Caleb sat alone inside the dark rented warehouse. He opened his laptop and let out a cold laugh.
He had the physical property deed to the penthouse. He also had Evelyn’s official identification cards. As the live in husband, Caleb always handled everything in the household. Evelyn was too lazy to manage her own paperwork. Because of this, all of her documents were perfectly placed right in his hands.
He connected to a secure network. Caleb went straight to the darkest corners of the internet. He found a notoriously violent small loan company.
They were ruthless loan sharks who broke bones when they did not get paid. Caleb used the penthouse deed and Evelyn’s documents to borrow two million dollars.
The approval was instant. But Caleb did not stop there. He drained every single online lending platform he could find. He took out every shady underground black market loan available under her name.
Notification bells rang constantly on his phone. His available funds rapidly rose back to five million dollars.
Caleb smiled a deadly smile. He deliberately set the final repayment deadline for exactly five days before the apocalypse. He had absolutely no intention of paying back a single cent.
He wanted the violent lending companies to come knocking. He wanted the debt collectors to find Evelyn and fight her family over the house. Caleb planned to sit back and watch both sides completely tear each other apart.
The next morning, Caleb drove back to the Pinecrest Sanctuary. He was exhausted from stockpiling heavy supplies all day yesterday. He just wanted to rest.
However, a nosy neighbor had seen Caleb spending money like water the previous day. The neighbor immediately spread the news. It quickly reached Evelyn’s ears.
Toby was absolutely furious when he heard the gossip. He screamed that Caleb was spending his money. Toby demanded an immediate explanation from Evelyn.
Evelyn became extremely angry. She brought her entire family straight to the gate of Caleb’s new villa.
When Caleb arrived at his gate, he saw them waiting. The Vanguard construction workers were busy welding steel plates. A large crowd of curious neighbors had already gathered on the street to watch the drama unfold.
Martha pointed a shaking wrinkled finger right at Caleb’s face. She shouted loudly so the entire crowd could hear her.
"You are a filthy scumbag! You want to divorce my daughter now that you have money!" Martha screamed.
Caleb stepped out of his car. He was completely speechless. He looked at the greedy family standing before him. He decided to mock them in front of everyone.
"You are a family of pathetic bloodsuckers," Caleb announced loudly. "I have never seen anyone whose younger brother expects his brother in law to pay for his wedding."
The crowd of onlookers gasped. They immediately started discussing the situation out loud. People pointed fingers at Toby and laughed at the grown man begging for handouts.
Evelyn saw the crowd judging them harshly. Her expression changed slightly. She realized screaming would only make them look worse. She immediately put on a sweet face and tried to coax Caleb.
"Caleb sweetheart," Evelyn purred softly. She took a step forward. "How can you call us bloodsuckers? We are just borrowing money from you. We are all family. When my brother gets married, he will always remember your kindness."
Caleb felt a deep sickness in his stomach. He flatly refused her request. He told her to prepare for the divorce.
Evelyn finally realized Caleb had truly changed. The obedient dog was gone. She immediately blocked his path to the gate.
"If you will not give us money, fine. But you have to hand over that jade pendant!" Evelyn demanded.
She glared at him with intense greed. "You clearly promised to give it to me before. How can you go back on your word?"
Evelyn had experienced a very strange dream last night. In that vivid dream, she held that exact jade pendant. She lived very comfortably during a terrifying apocalypse. In the same dream, Caleb was brutally killed by her own clever scheme.
When she woke up, she could not remember the actual content of the dream at all. She only remembered that the jade pendant was incredibly important. She absolutely had to get it.
Caleb looked into her desperate eyes. He sneered coldly. "Fine. I will give it to you in two days."
He did not want to waste another breath on these parasites. Caleb signaled the foreman. He ordered the heavy construction crew to drive Evelyn’s family away.
The burly workers raised their tools and aggressively chased the screaming family down the street.
Standing on the sidewalk a block away, Martha was completely furious. She slapped Evelyn hard on the arm. "You only care about your own stupid jade pendant! You did not get a single cent of the house money from him!"
Evelyn rubbed her temples in frustration. She had a terrible headache.
"If he is unwilling to give it to us, we cannot just rob him in broad daylight," Evelyn explained sharply. She turned around and tried to comfort her mother and her brother.
Toby dropped to his knees and started crying loudly. "If the house is not renovated, my girlfriend will break up with me!" Toby sobbed hysterically.
Evelyn sighed deeply. She comforted the two of them. "Julian has plenty of money. It is only right to have him give money to his future brother in law."
She pulled out her phone and contacted Julian to ask for the money. Julian was a famous playboy. He was a very rich second generation heir. Being with Evelyn was purely a matter of one being greedy for money and the other being greedy for sex.
Julian laughed smoothly through the phone. He quickly agreed to give her the cash.
"The money is fine baby," Julian said with a dark tone. "But you have to show some serious appreciation tonight. I have already booked room number one at the De Luxe Hotel."
Evelyn felt a wave of exhaustion. But she reluctantly agreed. However, her body ached from the stress of the morning.
"I am not feeling well today," Evelyn lied smoothly. "I need a couple of days to rest first."
Julian clicked his tongue in annoyance. But he accepted the delay. Evelyn hung up the phone. She stared back down the road toward Caleb’s heavily guarded fortress. The war between them was just starting.
