Colton's POV.

Just then, Felix started gasping for breath. His face turned pale, and his lips went dry.

Without wasting another minute, I carried him on my back as I ran from the village to the main city. Each step I took was filled with fear; my body shook in pain as I continued running.

“Please, Felix. Just hang in there”

I ran from house to house, seeking help. “My son is dying, help me”

“Get out”

“I don’t want any curse upon my family”

“It seems his curse will kill his son just like it did to his parents. Poor child, he chose the wrong person to be his father”

Hot tears streamed down my face; I’ve never hated my life in this way before. Are they telling the truth? Will this curse kill my son?

“Arggh no!!” I fastened my pace. No matter how long it will take me, I must get to the main city.

A journey of 2 hours by bus took me 3 hours of running as I missed the last bus.

Upon arriving at the hospital, the Nurses rushed to help out. Felix lay on the bed, looking as pale as though all life had drained from him. That terrified me the most. That terrified me the most.

“Please, help me check him. Is my son alive?”

"Yes, he is. However, his breathing is very low, and his temperature has dropped. It’s advisable to start treatment immediately to avoid putting his life at risk,” The nurse explained.

I move my head slowly in response, my eyes glued to Felix. “Please start the treatment”

“We can only mobilize his condition right now; you will need to pay for your son's bills before he receives proper attention," The nurse explained.

I lowered my head. If only Lisa had not taken my savings, things wouldn't end up this way. “Please, can you save him first? I promise to pay back”

My tears-filled eyes met with the nurse, each word trembling as they left my mouth.

"There is nothing we can do without payment." She replied, shaking her head.

The smell of antiseptic filled my nose. Nurses rushed past me while families waited anxiously outside the wards. Yet none of it mattered. My thoughts were fixed on Felix. I don't have any money left; my farm suffered from a flood about 2 weeks ago, I hadn’t recovered from the loss, and now my son’s life is at risk.

I stumbled out of the ward, my vision blurred by tears.

I didn't know where to go.

I didn't know whom to ask.

Then, Bang! I crashed into someone near the emergency ward.

A paper cup flew into the air. Hot coffee splashed across her white coat.

"Holy shit!"

I looked up.

A young woman stared down at her ruined white coat, the stain clinging to her professional badge. She was a doctor.

Guilt washed over me. I crouched to wipe the coffee. My hands were shaking; I couldn't even wipe it properly

She was about to respond when a voice interrupted. "Doctor! A newly admitted child with pneumonia is not showing vital signs!"

The doctor and the nurse rushed int- the emergency room immediately.

I let out a deep sigh, covering my face in shame. “Thank God an emergency came up; what if she asks me to pay”

I took a step forward when my heart pondered a thought. “Pneumonia? Newly admitted?” My eyes widened the moment the reality set in.

Felix!!!

After different attempts that lasted for thirty minutes, Felix finally became stable.

"It's just septic shock due to his low blood pressure. He is stable for now, but he needs adequate treatment to ensure his stability," The doctor explained things to me after attending to Felix.

In the terrifying moment, the doctor was the same woman beside me earlier.

I let out a deep sigh. Only then did I realize she was the same doctor I'd bumped into earlier, and that's enough for me. "Thank you so much, Doctor Maita. I will try my best to look for the money for his treatment"

"Please, come to my office," she said.

A few moments later, we sat across from each other in her office. The smile she'd worn earlier was gone, replaced by a serious expression.

"Mr ..?" She mumbled, trying to get my name.

"I'm Colton Ross", I completed the sentence.

She nodded calmly. "So, Mr Ross, I will be sincere with you: Felix’s condition is very critical. And if we delay his treatment any longer, his life might be at risk"

Tears brimmed at the corner of my eyes; no parents will want to put their son's life at risk. However, it's so painful that I can't even afford my son's bills; I hate myself so much at the moment.

"Please, Doctor, I'm a single father, and Felix is the only one I have left in this world. I promise to do anything in return, just save my son"

If anyone could save Felix, it was the woman sitting in front of me. From the way the nurses address her, she is definitely someone important.

If begging her on my knees will make things easy for Felix, I'm ready to do it.

"Oh, sorry about that. Accept my condolences; may your wife continue to rest in peace," she consoled.

"No, my wife is not dead", I replied, wiping my tears.

The Doctor blinked. "You mean?"

"She left me for another man"

"So sorry, I wasn't expecting that" Her eyes widened in surprise.

I stood from my seat and went on my knees. "Please save my son; I'm ready to do anything"

Just then, a call came in. "Sorry, I have to take this", she said as she answered the call.

I sobbed silently as she received the call; my heart won't stop aching as I put my head down.

"I'm too busy to spend my time in a fancy restaurant having unnecessary conversation!" Doctor Maita's voice increased with every response, even though she tried to control it.

Then our eyes met, and she smiled.

"I think I found a better option" And with that, the call ended.

Doctor Maita leaned back in her chair, studying me in silence. Her fingers tapped lightly against the desk.

"There may be one way I can help you..." She paused, looking carefully at my reaction.

My heart leaped. "Anything."

She met my eyes.

"Then become my husband.”

Colton's POVThe board meeting had been pushed back for weeks after Felix woke up. Maita wanted to give me enough time with Felix before handling the company affairs. Today was finally the day.I stood in front of the mirror and adjusted the dark suit Maita's stylist had chosen for me. I checked the collar, straightened my tie, and buttoned my jacket carefully. If I was going to walk into that room as Sterling Colton, I would at least make sure I looked like I belonged there. My new phone vibrated on the table, Maita had changed everything about me. Before I could reach for it, there was a knock on the door. Maita stepped inside, already dressed for the meeting. She carried a thin folder in one hand and a few photographs in the other.“We need to discuss something before we leave.”I turned toward her. “What is it?”She walked over and placed the photographs on the table. The first picture showed Lisa leaving a restaurant with a man. The next showed them together at a hotel, and ano

Colton's POV. I turned immediately, my eyes leaving Lisa's face. “Your son is awake!” I didn't wait for anything else. I rushed back toward Felix's ward, leaving Lisa standing where she was.I pushed the door open and found Felix sitting halfway up in the bed. His eyes were open, but they moved around the room without settling on anything. Both hands were pressed against the sides of his head, and his eyebrows were pulled together as though he was struggling to understand where he was.“Felix?” I moved closer. “Son, it's Daddy.” He didn't answer. I reached for his hand, but he

Colton's POVThe next morning, I woke before the alarm on my phone. For a few seconds, I stared at the unfamiliar ceiling, trying to remember where I was. Then everything from the previous day came rushing back.I sat up carefully, waiting for the ache in my ribs to settle before getting out of bed. The room was quiet, and the clothes someone had left for me were neatly arranged on a chair. I changed without paying much attention to them, then picked up my phone and called the hospital before leaving the estate.“Felix is stable,” the nurse told me. “He is still unconscious, but there hasn't been any major change.” I closed my eyes briefly and nodded. “I'm coming.” Those two words were all I could manage before ending the call.A driver was waiting outside when I stepped into the driveway. I stopped for a moment, looking at the car. It was another reminder that things had changed overnight, even though nothing that mattered to me had changed at all. I got into the back seat, gave the

Colton's POVThe agreement was finalized before I could fully process what was happening. I sat across from Maita in the same office where I had begged her to save my son, a pen resting between my fingers as I stared at the pages in front of me. Every clause seemed strangely distant, as though I were reading about someone else's life. Marriage for one year. Separate personal lives. No interference with her business. In return, Felix's treatment would be covered. I signed where she pointed, my signature appearing beneath hers. When I placed the pen down, Maita collected the documents and checked the final page carefully. “It's done.” Her voice was as matter-of-fact as it had been throughout the entire arrangement. I nodded slowly, but my eyes remained on the papers. Done. Just like that, I was no longer simply Colton Ross, the farmer who had spent the day running through the city with his sick son on his back. I had become part of an agreement I never imagined signing. The lawyer si

My mind struggled to process what I had just heard, but my body reacted before my thoughts could catch up. My fingers tightened around the arm of the chair, and I remained silent, staring at the woman sitting across from me.Slowly, I tried to sit up straighter, but the movement sent a dull ache through my bruised ribs. I stopped halfway and gripped the chair harder until the pain eased. Only then did I remember the beating I had taken earlier. My entire body felt exhausted, my arms heavy, my legs almost too weak to carry me, yet Maita's proposal had somehow forced me to forget the pain for a moment.“Why me?” The question finally escaped my lips. My voice sounded rough and unfamiliar, even to me. I looked down at myself before meeting her eyes again. My clothes were dirty and wrinkled, my face st
