Chapter 14

Colton's POV

The morning after Maita carried Felix out of the school, I watched them from the doorway of Felix’s room. Felix was asleep with one hand curled around the edge of Maita’s sleeve, as if even in sleep he needed to know she was still there. Maita sat beside him without moving, her expensive dress wrinkled from the hours she had spent on the chair. She had a board meeting that morning, yet she had chosen to stay beside a little boy who was not even her biological son.

Chapter 15Lisa's POV. Everything had changed after Maita removed Derek from his position. He kept telling me it was temporary, that he had connections and would recover soon, but I watched those connections disappear one after another. People who used to answer his calls suddenly became unavailable. The expensive dinners became less frequent. The gifts stopped arriving. Even the apartment that once made me feel like I had finally escaped poverty had started feeling strangely quiet.Derek came home late that evening, dropping his keys on the table before walking past me. “You're back,” I said. He barely looked at me. “I'm tired.” I waited for him to say more, but he simply headed toward the bedroom. “You didn't tell me you were coming home late.” He stopped and glanced over his shoulder. “Lisa, I said I'm tired.” Something about his tone made an old memory surface before I could stop it.Colton had come home tired too. There were nights when he returned from the farm with mud on

Maita sat beside him without moving, her expensive dress wrinkled from the hours she had spent on the chair. She had a board meeting that morning, yet she had chosen to stay beside a little boy who was not even her biological son.Something about that stayed with me.I had spent days telling myself that this marriage was a means to an end, but watching Maita brush Felix’s hair away from his forehead made that excuse harder to hold onto.Still, I had a promise to keep.Lisa had taken my money, my dignity, and years of my life. I wasn't ready to forgive her. I left Felix in Maita’s care.Somehow, she put my mind at rest. The room had become my second battlefield.Documents covered the desk. Company reports, payment records, supp

CHAPTER 13COLTON’S POV******Felix had never liked unfamiliar places, but I had hoped the school Maita chose would be different. The moment the car stopped in front of the enormous building, I knew I had been too hopeful. The school looked more like a private university than a place filled with children. Tall glass windows reflected the morning sun, neatly trimmed gardens surrounded the entrance, and students in expensive uniforms moved between the buildings with their parents and teachers. Felix stared at everything from the back seat without making a sound. When I opened the door, he did not move. His small hand stayed wrapped around mine, and when I tried to guide him out, he held on tighter. I looked at him through the open door and crouched beside the car. "You do not have to be afraid. I will stay with you until you are comfortable." Felix did not look at me. His attention remained fixed on the school entrance, as if he were trying to understand what waited beyond those door

Maita's POV I had never liked people touching what was mine. That was one reason I hated crowded places. Too many hands. Too many people crossing boundaries as if they had the right. But what happened with Donald was different. The moment his fingers closed around Colton's shoulder, I had wanted to remove his hand myself. That thought followed me long after Donald left.I sat behind my desk, staring at the same document for several minutes without reading a single line.Colton had stood there quietly while Donald warned him.My husband. The words looked strange in my mind. "My husband."A man who had entered my life because we needed something from each other. That was supposed to be all.A contract for one year. Simple. So why had seeing Donald touch him annoyed me that much?I closed the file. "Ridiculous."My phone rang.I answered without checking the number. "Yes?""Maita."I leaned back; it's my Uncle. "Go on. Is there any problem?""Derek is asking for his position back, and I

Colton's POV. Damn! It's just my imagination. My mind went too far while looking at Lisa with the knife in her hand, she was trying to make a self defence. Derek rushed toward me, and I moved before he could land a punch. I caught his arm, twisted it behind his back, and drove him to the ground. I had spent years working on a farm, lifting heavy sacks, carrying equipment, wrestling with broken machinery when there was nobody else to help. I was not a trained fighter, but I knew how to use weight, movement, and whatever strength I had.And right now, I had plenty of anger to work with.I looked at Derek, then Lisa. The sight of them standing together dragged something out of me that I had spent months trying to bury.Felix in the wardrobe. His small voice telling me he had been left there. The hospital. The empty bottle of medicine.Lisa walking away with another man while our son could barely breathe. All those memories crowded.Derek became every humiliation I had swallowed because

Chapter 010.Colton's POV Maita tried to stand, but the moment she shifted her weight, her body betrayed her again. I caught her before she could fall. For a second, neither of us moved. She was still half-seated against me, one hand resting on my shoulder while I held her around the waist. Our faces were close enough that I could see the faint tiredness beneath her eyes, something she had managed to hide all morning behind her perfectly arranged hair and that controlled expression she wore whenever she was working. Then the door opened without a knock."Well."Maita immediately pulled away from me.The man standing at the entrance looked like he owned the room. He was dressed in an expensive charcoal suit, silver threaded through his dark hair, and his gaze moved from Maita to me before settling on Maita again."Uncle Donald," Maita said coldly. He smiled. "So this is the husband."Maita's expression changed. Whatever little softness had been there moments ago disappeared. "What are
