The heavy steel gate of Chamber 07 ground upward with a stressed hydraulic shriek.

Kaelen stepped out onto the cold concrete walkway of the evaluation floor, his hands casually tucked back into his faded uniform pockets. The sand on his boots left a faint trail behind him. In the spectator gallery above, the absolute silence was almost suffocating. Dozens of recruits were pressed against the reinforced glass, their jaws practically on the floor as they stared from him to the display screen that was still flashing a bright, emerald green: [Evaluation: Complete.]

Jaxson was standing near the front rail, his knuckles white as he gripped the iron banister. The smug, superior grin he'd worn just ten minutes ago had completely shattered, replaced by a twitching look of pure, unadulterated disbelief.

"Hey, Thorne," the senior instructor on the catwalk finally called out, his booming voice cutting through the quiet. He was leaning over the rail, his sharp eyes narrowing as he stared intently at Kaelen's left wrist. "Bring your tracker band over to the scanning station. Right now."

Kaelen walked over to the waist-high steel pedestal at the edge of the pit. His thoughts were running at an icy, deliberate pace. Let them dig. The ancient Beastcaller network inside his father's pendant was humming warmly against his collarbone, perfectly maintaining the deep camouflage protocol it had thrown up the moment the biometric needles bit into his flesh.

He extended his arm, pressing the matte-black face of the military band against the glass scanner.

Ping.

A holographic readout projected into the air between them: [Recruit: Thorne, Kaelen. Core Rank: F (Stable). Vital Signs: Elevated Adrenaline. Combat Method: Psychological/Acoustic Distraction.]

The instructor stared at the readout for five long seconds, tapping his digital pad with a heavy sigh. "An F-rank core with a high-frequency vocal anomaly. You didn't suppress the beast with energy; you managed to trigger a localized auditory panic loop in its damaged inner ear. Lucky bastard. A pass is a pass. Move to the secondary assembly area."

A collective murmur of understanding rippled through the gallery.

"I knew it!" one of Jaxson's lackeys blurted out, laughing in relief. "He didn't actually fight it. The freak just used some weird street-rat trick because the monster was already limping! A pure fluke!"

Jaxson let out a loud, aggressive breath, his shoulders dropping as his confidence flooded back. "A fluke is right. Enjoy your little miracle, zero. Tomorrow we enter the live wilderness sectors, and tricks won't save your skin when a whole pack opens their jaws."

Kaelen didn't turn back to look at them. The faintest trace of a smile touched the corner of his mouth as he walked down the dim corridor toward the barracks. Let them believe it was luck. The longer they looked at him like a defenseless mouse, the easier it would be to build his empire right under their noses.

[Camouflage efficiency: 100%.]

[Target Unit 'Quillback Scavenger' has been successfully registered to your vacant sovereign slot.]

[Current Bond: 100% (Absolute Submission). Sub-space summoning available.]

The barracks were exactly what one would expect from a frontline outpost—rows of cold, iron triple-bunk beds, concrete floors that sweated moisture, and the distant, rhythmic thud of the perimeter defense turrets firing at wandering aerial spores.

By the time lights-out rolled around at 22:00, the room was filled with the heavy, exhausted snoring of fifty traumatized teenagers. Kaelen lay flat on his back on the middle bunk, his hands behind his head, staring at the metallic ceiling panels.

The room was freezing, but the small, pulsing warmth from the brass pendant kept his core incredibly comfortable. He closed his eyes, letting his consciousness slip into the newly unlocked sub-space pocket within his mind.

In the quiet, dark expanse of his inner thoughts, a massive, glowing blue sigil floated in the air. Right beneath it, the Quillback Scavenger he had subdued earlier was curled into a tight, leathery ball on a patch of ethereal sand. The second his mental shadow approached, the deadly, razor-sharp quills along its spine instantly flattened. It raised its hairless, grey head, its large yellow eyes blinking with a strange, almost pathetic eagerness.

‘Quiet,’ Kaelen communicated through a silent, mental ripple. *We have a long trip tomorrow.*

The massive, terrifying alien predator let out a tiny, soft whimper in his mind, shifting its heavy paws and tucking its snout under its tail like a thoroughly scolded family puppy.

Kaelen couldn't help but chuckle silently in the dark. If the high-and-mighty generals at the capital knew that one of the most hated vanguard scavenger species could be turned into a needy household pet with a simple lark whistle, they'd probably lose their minds.

The next morning came with the brutal violence of an emergency siren.

"Gear up! Vests on! Live field deployment in ten minutes!" The barracks doors slammed open as three junior officers marched down the aisle, tossing heavy canvas tactical packs onto the floorboards.

The room erupted into instant, terrified chaos. Recruits were scrambling for their boots, swearing under their breath as they tried to fasten their standard-issue armor plates. Kaelen pulled his boots on, his movements incredibly light and fluid due to the lingering agility boost from the day before. His pack was strapped and secured before Jaxson had even managed to rub the sleep out of his eyes.

Ten minutes later, they were standing in the massive lower launch bay. The rear blast doors were fully retracted, exposing the raw, wild expanse of the Ashfall Basin's outer wilderness. It was a jagged landscape of black volcanic rock, dead timber, and thick, undulating purple mists that drifted through the ravines like toxic rivers.

"Your objective today is simple!" the head instructor shouted over the roaring wind, pointing toward the desolate valley. "A three-kilometer navigation march through the outer perimeter. Your tracker bands are synchronized. Any recruit that strays past the white marker flags will be outside the defensive shield loop—meaning you become fair game for the wild breeds. Form your three-man fireteams now!"

Instantly, the wealthy heirs and D-rank recruits clustered together, leaving the weaker Level-E students to scramble for whatever scraps were left.

Jaxson walked up to Kaelen, flanked by his two heavy-set lackeys. He adjusted the straps of his tactical vest, his dark green wristband glowing confidently against the grey mist.

"Well, look at that. The zero is all alone," Jaxson sneered, blocking Kaelen's path toward the supply rack. "What's the matter, Thorne? None of the charity cases want to team up with a freak who relies on flukes? Too bad. If you can't find a fireteam in two minutes, the regulations say you have to march the rear trail entirely by yourself."

Kaelen looked past Jaxson's shoulder, staring out into the dense, swirling purple fog of the valley. The basic Beast Comprehension skill in his brain was already twitching, picking up dozens of faint, low-frequency vibrations resonating through the distant rocks. There were things out there. Large things. And they weren't limping.

"I don't need a team, Jaxson," Kaelen said, his voice carrying a flat, deadpan indifference that completely ignored the older boy's attempts at intimidation.

He slung his rucksack higher onto his shoulders and walked straight past him, stepping off the concrete launch ramp and directly into the cold, unpredictable wilds of the alien sector.

Behind him, Jaxson's jaw tightened. But Kaelen was already gone, swallowed by the mist, a faint, almost imperceptible whistle threading through the wind.

Managing a sixty-strong swarm of mutated, venom-dripping scavengers turned out to be significantly more annoying than Kaelen had anticipated. The newly unlocked Swarm Link feature was a tactical marvel on paper, allowing him to issue complex, multi-unit commands to a hive-mind simultaneously. In practice, however, it felt like trying to listen to sixty different radio stations broadcasting static at the exact same time. Every time one of the Ash-Blighted Quillbacks stepped on a sharp piece of volcanic glass, Kaelen felt a phantom pinch in his mind. When two of them argued over a patch of dry moss, a spike of petty, hissing irritation bloomed behind his eyes. "Mute," Kaelen muttered, rubbing his temples as he navigated a narrow ravine. "Everyone, mute. Only the alpha stays on the open channel."Instantly, the mental cacophony dropped to a dull, manageable hum, leaving only the crisp, disciplined tactical feed of the Blighted Alpha trotting at his left knee. • CHAPTER 6: The Pack in the Fog

Walking through the Ashfall Basin with four apex predators as an escort was, surprisingly, a very quiet affair. Kaelen moved at a steady, unhurried pace, his boots crunching softly on the volcanic glass. Flanking him in a perfect diamond formation were the four Ash-Stalkers. The alpha, which Kaelen had mentally dubbed 'Shadow', took the point. Its six legs moved in absolute silence, the scythe-like front claws retracting slightly to pad softly against the rock. For the first kilometer, Kaelen used the time to experiment with his newly upgraded Beast Comprehension (Level 2). The system had promised a deeper connection, and it hadn't disappointed. By focusing on the base of Shadow’s skull, Kaelen found he could temporarily sync his neural pathways with the beast’s sensory cluster. He closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting his physical vision fade. Instantly, the world exploded into a breathtaking, three-dimensional wireframe of vibrations. He couldn't see the purple mist or the

  • CHAPTER 5: Into the Purple Mist

The transition from the concrete launch ramp to the raw wilderness of the Ashfall Basin was like stepping from a sterile hospital ward into a slaughterhouse. The moment Kaelen’s boots crossed the threshold of the defensive shield loop, the temperature plummeted. The air here didn’t just feel cold; it felt heavy, saturated with a fine, abrasive ash that coated his tongue with the taste of copper and old fires. Above him, the sky was a bruised, sickly violet, choked by the thick, undulating mists that rolled through the jagged ravines like toxic rivers. He didn't look back. He could already imagine Jaxson and his lackeys standing at the edge of the ramp, laughing at the "F-rank idiot" who had just walked into a death trap without a fireteam. Let them laugh. Laughter made people careless, and in the wilds beyond the perimeter, carelessness was the fastest way to end up as fertilizer.Kaelen adjusted the straps of his canvas rucksack, his breathing steady and rhythmic. The military transport shuttle didn't land; it dropped. The deceleration was a brutal, teeth-rattling descent that forced every recruit against their nylon safety harnesses. Through the narrow, reinforced plexiglass port across the aisle, the grey horizon of Tartarus Outpost finally slammed into view. It was a sprawling, concrete scar carved directly into the jagged, ash-strewn valley of the Frostfall Sector, completely surrounded by a towering, pulsating iron perimeter shield that kept the local alien spores at bay.The heavy hydraulic ramp hissed open, hitting the tarmac with a resounding metallic thud. Instantly, the thin, freezing mountain air rushed into the cabin, carrying the sharp, synthetic stench of burning jet fuel and ionized ozone."Out! Out! Line up by row! Move your lazy asses!" a drill instructor bellowed through a portable megaphone at the bottom of the ramp, his scarred face twisted into a permanent mask of military irritation.Kaelen unbuckled his harness, his finge

  • CHAPTER 2: The Resonance of the Wind

The morning sun didn’t rise so much as it bled through the heavy grey smog hanging over the eastern district. When the automated 5:30 AM buzzer blared through the rusty speaker grill above his bunk, Kaelen didn't groan or drag his feet like he usually did. He sat straight up, his eyes wide open in the dim light of the dormitory. He immediately pressed his palm against his ribs. Nothing. The sharp, breath-catching ache from Jaxson’s boots was completely gone. He pulled his undershirt down, staring at his skin in the reflection of the small cracked mirror bolted to the locker door. The deep purple bruising that should have been there had vanished, leaving only smooth, healthy skin.It wasn't a dream. His hand went to the brass wolf pendant resting against his collarbone. It felt warm, humming with a strange, low-frequency current that resonated directly with his heart. The moment his fingers brushed the metal, the soft blue text materialized in the empty space before him, casting a cool
