The Iron Claws
The loud screech of tearing metal echoed through the massive circular chamber. Giant iron claws burst from the steel deck floor, their sharp mechanical talons snapping near Maeson's bare feet. Dense sparks of blue electricity showered over the platform, casting wild shadows across the dark walls. Maeson leaped back fast, pulling her mother and the baby away from the grasping iron jaws."Get behind me!" her father shouted, stepping in front of the group with his boots planted firm on the vibrating floor.Administrator Vane stood on the upper ramp, his dark coat drifting in the hot air rising from the floor gaps. He held his iron staff high, the red crystal on top glowing with intense power. His cold, pale face showed no mercy as he controlled the mechanical talons with simple hand gestures."You cannot win this fight, Subject 84," Vane stated in his smooth, dry voice. "The facility defense system controls every piece of metal in this room."Kael stepped forward, his sleek steel arm hum
The Eye Above
Maeson stared up at the vast blue sky as the clouds tore apart like wet cloth. The giant eye looked down from the heavens, its huge dark pupil pulsing with a cold red glow. The gentle wind died in an instant. The green leaves on the trees hung still, frozen in mid air like painted glass. Her heart hammered in her chest as the sweet smell of meadow flowers turned into the sharp stink of burnt copper."Maeson!" her mother cried out, reaching over to pull the baby close. Her mother's face turned pale in the strange red light casting down from above. Her father stepped in front of them, his heavy fists raised toward the open sky. "What is this?" he shouted, his voice shaking with anger. "We broke the paper maze! We crossed the threshold!"Kael looked down at his mechanical hand. The metal joints clicked and sparked, blue energy leaking from the wrist seams. "The environment is locking down," Kael said, his voice tense. "The system is trying to roll back our physical state to the start of
The Choice Pen
Maeson stood on the shaking sheet of white paper as the void opened up below. Her heart slammed against her ribs with terrifying force. Cold air whipped through the dark space, pulling at her hair and clothes. Just ten feet away, the paper split right down the middle with a sharp tearing sound. Her mother and father slid toward the widening edge, their hands clawing at the slick parchment in total desperation."Maeson!" her mother screamed, her voice echoing into the dark abyss."Hold on to me!" her father shouted, grabbing his wife's arm with a desperate grip as their feet slipped over the brink.Maeson did not hesitate. She dropped to her knees on the edge of the floating page, holding the author's child tight against her shoulder with her left arm. She stretched her right hand out into the empty air, her fingers missing her father's sleeve by mere inches.High above their heads, the giant iron pen hovered in the dark clouds. The sharp nib glowed with a harsh red light, casting a bl
The Ink Press
Maeson froze near the heavy wooden desk. Her heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird. She stared across the vast underground library at the tall man wearing the golden crown. The King of Solis held a heavy steel chain in his gloved right hand. The metal links dragged across the stone floor with a harsh clanking sound.Attached to the end of the chain were three iron collars. The collars locked around the necks of her mother, her father, and Ava. Her family looked thin, tired, and bruised, their clothes torn from long days in dark cells. Behind them stood a massive mechanical machine with giant iron rollers that dripped with thick black ink. The dark liquid pooled on the stone floor below, smelling like hot copper and scorched oil."Mother! Father! Ava!" Maeson called out, her voice raw with deep human pain. Her mother raised her head slowly, her dark eyes filling with tears of relief. "Maeson..." her mother whispered, her voice weak and hoarse. "Do not give him the child!"
The Frozen River
The cold air whistled past Maeson's ears as she fell toward the canyon floor. She held the small bundle tight against her chest, wrapping her body around the sleeping child. Below them, the wild river water froze into a thick sheet of clear glass in a single second. The giant mechanical hand reached out from the icy surface, its long steel fingers opening wide to catch her.Maeson slammed into the palm of the giant metal hand. The heavy impact rattled her bones, but the smooth steel plates gave way slightly, cushioning her fall. She landed hard on her side, her arm protecting the small baby from any harm. She lay there for two brief seconds, taking long, ragged breaths of cold air as her chest heaved."Are you alright, little one?" Maeson whispered, pulling back the cloth to check on the infant. The baby boy looked up at her with soft dark eyes. He did not cry or scream. The golden book mark on his hand faded back into a warm glow, shining gently against his pale skin. Maeson let out
The Author's Son
Maeson dropped the wooden branch onto the soft moss. She rushed forward, catching the young woman before her face hit the damp forest floor. The woman’s skin felt ice cold to the touch. The silver mark on her forehead flickered weak, its blue light dying like an old lamp. She held the small bundle against her ribs with a tight, desperate grip."Hold on," Maeson said gently, lifting the woman's head up from the dirt. "Stay with me."The woman shook her head slowly, her breath coming in quick, shallow gasps. Tears cut clean lines through the dark dirt on her pale cheeks. "There is no time," she whispered, her raw voice barely louder than the rustling pine leaves overhead. "The King's scouts tracked us from the high border. They know he is alive."Maeson looked down at the bloody cloth. She carefully pulled back a small corner of the fabric. Resting inside was a tiny baby boy, fast asleep. His small face looked peaceful, unaffected by the cold forest air. But right on the back of his lef
