I gripped my knife tightly, my senses on high alert. The Darach's eyes seemed to bore into my soul, its gaze hypnotic. "You're... different," the Darach repeated, its voice low and menacing. "A threat to my existence." My heart pounded, my breath caught in my throat. "I won't back down," I said, trying to sound braver than I felt. I sprinted up the stairs, slamming my bedroom door shut behind me. Breathless, I rummaged through my worn leather bag. Amidst the chaos, a tattered book emerged.
