Surgical Precision Under Fire

The air inside the dissection theater grew so still that the faint, rhythmic ticking of Caelen’s golden timer sounded like a hammer striking an anvil.

[ 10 Years : 00 Months : 23 Hours : 28 Minutes ]

Twelve elite Enforcement guards held their breath, their fingers trembling against the triggers of their lowered energy rifles. Officer Lyra Vance stood three paces back, her hand lingering inches above her rapier, her gray eyes locked onto Caelen’s every move with hyper-focused intensity.

Caelen didn't hesitate. His kinetic vision flared, mapping the pine crate in a web of glowing vector lines.

[ TARGET: BIOLOGICAL BOMB DISARMAMENT ]

[ SENSITIVITY: HIGH (Pressure-sensitive mana-capsules along sternum alignment) ]

[ SAFE ACCESS POINTS: Lateral iron structural pins (Left Side) ]

Holding his scalpel like a precision chisel, Caelen drove the flat edge beneath the top-left iron band encasing the box. With a flick of his wrist, he sheared through the iron rivet without striking the pine wood beneath.

Clink.

The iron band snapped back, curling like a silver ribbon. He repeated the motion three times in rapid succession—clink, clink, clink—his movements so blindingly fast and steady that his hands appeared as a blur beneath the flickering mana-lamps.

"He's not even measuring the angle," one of the guards whispered in awe, swallowing hard. "He's cutting blind!"

"He's not cutting blind," Lyra growled softly under her breath, her eyes tracking the flawless trajectory of Caelen’s blade. "He knows the exact density of the steel."

With a soft groan of dry timber, Caelen wedged the flat of his bone saw beneath the lid and levered it upward.

A puff of sickly greenish-gray mist hissed from the seam.

"Don't breathe!" Caelen commanded coldly.

Without breaking stride, he reached into his satchel with his left hand, grabbed a glass bottle of liquid nitrogen used for freezing tissue samples, and smashed the neck against the stone table. He tipped the freezing liquid directly along the open crack of the crate.

Fzzzzzt!

A plume of white frost instantly blanketed the box. The greenish mist froze mid-air, crystallizing into tiny harmless flakes that clattered against the stone floor like ice chips.

[ HAZARDOUS GAS NEUTRALIZED VIA HYPER-COOLING ]

[ CONTAINER OPENED SAFELY ]

Caelen threw the wooden lid aside. It smashed against the floor, revealing the corpse inside.

The body was that of a middle-aged man dressed in the simple linen robes of a lower-district laborer. But his skin was a mottled, horrifying shade of dark obsidian, crisscrossed with glowing purple veins that throbbed with a sickening, artificial pulse despite his lack of a heartbeat.

Directly over the corpse's chest, embedded into the breastbone, was a clear glass sphere filled with a swirling, crimson liquid—a high-grade mana-detonator wired directly into the dead man's major arteries.

"Merciful Gods," Tim, the young assistant instructor, gasped from the far wall. "That's... that's a Chrono-Rot charge! If that sphere ruptures, the airborne infection will liquefy the lungs of everyone in this room!"

"It's worse than that," Caelen said calmly, leaning over the corpse. His Diagnostic Eye zoomed into the micro-structures of the dead man's heart. "The rot isn't natural. It's a synthetic strain designed to attach to the target's life-span frequency. The moment it infects you, your timer doesn't just stop—it drains back into a central collection node."

He looked up, his dark eyes fixing on Lyra. "Tell me, Officer Vance. Who collects the expired lifespans when an 'accidental' bio-hazard outbreak occurs in the Lower Precinct?"

Lyra’s jaw tightened. "The Medical Guild's Reclamation Division. They harvest the unallocated hours from deceased citizens and transfer them to the municipal reserve."

"To the 'reserve,'" Caelen mocked, a sharp, bitter laugh escaping his lips. "Or to Dr. Valerius Sterling's personal time-bank account. This man didn't die of a natural mana-vein rupture. He was murdered three hours ago with an intravenous injection of Chrono-Rot, then rigged with a detonator so that whoever opened his chest would become the scapegoat for a precinct epidemic."

He pointed his scalpel at the corpse's left shoulder, where a tiny, circular puncture mark was hidden beneath a fake medical stamp.

"Look closely," Caelen commanded. "That's the official seal of the Guild's Central Pathology Division. The exact same division that authorized this corpse's transfer to my laboratory."

Lyra stepped closer, her boots clicking softly against the frost-covered stone. She bent down, inspecting the puncture mark and the glass detonator embedded in the sternum. Her face grew paler with every second, her storm-gray eyes flashing with cold, dangerous fury.

"Valerius signed the transfer order himself," she whispered, her voice laced with poison. "He told my department that a rogue instructor was planning to steal a dangerous specimen..."

"He used you," Caelen said simply. "He knew you had seventy-two hours to live. If the bomb went off, you and your squad would die, I would be framed as a crazy bio-terrorist, and Valerius would sweep in to 'clean up' the laboratory while pocketing the remaining years from your dead bodies."

Silence descended upon the anatomy theater.

The twelve guards looked at one another, their faces contorted with rage and disgust. They were soldiers who had bled for the Academy's security, only to discover they were being led into a butcher's trap by the very directors they were sworn to protect.

"That corrupt old bastard," the lead guard growled, his knuckles turning white around his rifle grip. "He traded our lives for a few extra years of youth!"

"Commander Vance," another guard stepped forward, his voice trembling. "What are our orders?"

Lyra didn't answer immediately. She stood over the frozen corpse, her chest heaving as a sudden, sharp spasm of pain wracked her left side. She clutched her ribs, a hoarse gasp escaping her lips as a thin trail of dark, crystallized blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.

[ WARNING: TARGET LYRA VANCE EXPERIENCING ACUTE ARTERIAL SPASM ]

[ COUNTDOWN ACCELERATING: 48 HOURS REMAINING ]

Caelen moved instantly. He caught her by the shoulder before her knees could buckle, easing her back into a wooden dissection chair beside the table.

"Sit down," he ordered, his voice commanding and devoid of hesitation. "Your mana-artery is expanding. If you throw another fit of rage, the tissue will tear before nightfall."

"I don't... take orders... from suspects," Lyra gritted out through clenched teeth, though she lacked the strength to push his hand away.

"You aren't dealing with a suspect," Caelen said, snapping a pair of sterile rubber gloves onto his hands. "You're dealing with your surgeon. Tim! Fetch me two bottles of grain alcohol, a spool of silk vascular thread, and the high-grade silver cautery irons from the storage vault. Now!"

The pale assistant didn't ask questions this time. "Y-Yes, Dr. Voss!" he yelled, sprinting toward the supply cabinet.

"Voss..." Lyra gasped, sweat pouring down her forehead as the nerve blockers in her system completely failed. "You can't... perform surgery here... without an operating theater... without stasis field generators..."

"Stasis fields are for doctors who don't know anatomy," Caelen said coolly, setting a tray of gleaming steel tools on a small side cart. "I've performed open-heart procedures in the back of moving ambulances during rainstorms. A cold stone basement is a luxury."

He picked up a clean scalpel and a bottle of antiseptic, turning his dark, burning eyes down to meet her pain-filled gaze.

"You have two choices, Officer Vance," Caelen said softly, his voice cutting through her agony like a beacon of absolute certainty. "You can let your guards carry you back to the Guild hospital, where Valerius will give you another bottle of poison and watch you die in seventy-two hours... or you can lie back, keep your mouth shut, and let a real doctor save your life."

Lyra looked up at the ceiling, her breath coming in shallow, agonizing gasps. She felt the cold death creeping into her chest—the same cold death she had tried to ignore for six agonizing months.

Then she looked at Caelen. She saw the steady, unwavering hands of a man who had faced down an armed squad, disarmed a biological bomb with a bone saw, and forced the Chrono-System itself to break a Chief Director.

Slowly, painfully, Lyra leaned her head back against the wooden rest.

"If you kill me, Voss..." she whispered, her gray eyes locking onto his with raw, fierce determination, "...my men will shoot you before my heart stops beating."

"They can try," Caelen replied, a faint, razor-sharp smile touching his lips as he raised the scalpel. "Hold her down, gentlemen. This is going to burn."

Outside the anatomy theater, night fell over the Chrono-Medical Academy.

In the towering, glass-spired estate of the Upper District, Dr. Valerius Sterling sat in a plush velvet armchair, staring into a crystal glass of amber wine. His face was pale, lined with deep, unnatural wrinkles, and his once-vibrant dark hair was now a dull, silver-gray.

Above his head, his golden counter read: [ 132 Years : 08 Months : 12 Days ].

Ten years gone. Ten full years stolen by a penniless, disgraced insect he should have executed weeks ago.

"Why hasn't the report come in?!" Valerius smashed his glass against the marble fireplace, the amber liquid splattering across the pristine white stone. "The specimen was delivered two hours ago! Officer Vance should have detonated the charge by now!"

A shadowed figure stepped out from behind the velvet drapes—a tall, slender man wearing a high-collared black coat embroidered with a silver needle piercing an hourglass.

The mark of the Poison Guild.

"Officer Vance did not detonate the charge," the shadowy man said, his voice flat and sibilant like a sliding snake. "Our scouts report that the Lower Precinct laboratory has been sealed from the inside. Officer Vance's elite squad is guarding the perimeter, refusing entry to all Guild representatives."

"What?!" Valerius stood up, his aged body trembling with violent fury. "She’s committing mutiny! Seize her! Send the High Guards! I want Caelen Voss’s head on a silver spike before sunrise!"

"It is not that simple, Director," the shadowy man replied calmly, pulling a black parchment scroll from his coat. "Caelen Voss did not just disarm the detonator. He neutralized the Chrono-Rot strain using localized nitrogen freezing—a method not recorded in any Guild medical manual."

The shadow leaned forward, his glowing red eyes piercing through the dim firelight.

"The boy you tried to execute is not a simple disgraced professor, Valerius. His diagnostic speed exceeds human parameters. The Guild Council has taken notice."

Valerius’s eyes widened with a mix of fear and desperation. "Then activate the secondary plan! The freshman welcoming banquet is tonight! Five hundred students from the major noble houses will be in the central hall! If Voss isn't dead, he will try to expose us!"

The shadowy man smiled—a thin, lifeless slit across his pale face.

"Let him try," the shadow whispered softly. "The wine has already been served. In twenty-four hours, the entire freshman class will belong to the Poison Guild... and if Dr. Voss attempts to save them, he will find that even a god-tier surgeon cannot operate on five hundred dying hearts at once."

Back in the cold, stone basement of the Lower Precinct, Caelen pulled the final silk suture tight against Lyra Vance’s chest, snipping the thread with a sharp snip of his surgical scissors.

[ SURGICAL PROCEDURE SUCCESSFUL ]

[ MANA-ARTERY REPAIRED & STABILIZED ]

[ TARGET LYRA VANCE EXPIRATION RESET: 42 YEARS ]

Lyra lay still on the table, her chest rising and falling in deep, painless breaths. The dark purple discoloration on her neck had completely vanished, replaced by the healthy, warm flush of living blood.

Above her forehead, her pale blue counter flickered violently before exploding upward with a dazzling light:

[ 42 Years : 06 Months : 10 Days ]

The twelve guards gasped, dropping to their knees in absolute reverence.

Lyra opened her eyes, sitting up slowly. She placed a hand over her chest, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of her heart—a heart that no longer burned, no longer bled, no longer screamed in agony.

She looked up at Caelen, her gray eyes filled with a complex, overwhelming storm of emotion.

"You... you actually cured me," she whispered.

Caelen didn't answer right away. He washed his blood-stained hands in a basin of clean water, wiping them dry with a clean towel before pulling his heavy coat back over his shoulders.

He looked at his golden counter glowing above his head, then at the black cardstock note lying on the counter.

"I kept my end of the deal, Officer," Caelen said softly, turning toward the heavy iron exit doors. "Now it's time for you to keep yours."

Lyra stood up from the operating table, her movement fluid, graceful, and entirely free of pain. She buckled her rapier back onto her waist, her face hardening into an expression of iron resolve.

"Where are we going, Doctor?" she asked, her voice steady and lethal.

Caelen paused at the door, looking back over his shoulder with a sharp, terrifying smile.

"The Upper District Gala," Caelen said. "We have five hundred patients to crash."
