The express-tram slowed with a smooth, magnetic hiss as it glided into the Private Spire Terminal of the Upper District. Outside the reinforced quartz windows, crystalline skyscrapers cut into the night sky like polished glass daggers, their spires laced with golden energy filaments that fed power and light directly into the estates of the Timeless Elite.

Caelen stepped out onto the carpeted platform, his leather coat open over his dark medical tunic. Lyra walked alongside him, her hand hovering near her rapier hilt, her eyes scanning the grand marble concourse. Her twelve Enforcement guards fanned out into a defensive wedge around them, their heavy boots echoing against the polished floor.

"The Grand Atrium is two levels above us," Lyra whispered, her voice low as they approached a private brass elevator guarded by two gilded automata. "The banquet officially began twenty minutes ago. The inaugural toasts are scheduled for the stroke of nine."

Caelen checked his internal clock. His vision faintly outlined the ticking golden counter floating above his head:

[ 10 Years : 00 Months : 23 Hours : 04 Minutes ]

"Then we have less than fifteen minutes before five hundred students raise their glasses to drink liquid death," Caelen said quietly.

Before they could reach the elevator doors, a heavy iron chime resonated through the hall.

The brass doors of the service elevator to their left groaned open, and three figures in white, blood-stained lab coats stumbled out into the concourse. They were young medical interns from the Lower Precinct's triage division, their faces pale and slick with sweat. Pushed behind them on a floating anti-gravity gurney was a young woman wrapped in a silver thermal blanket, her body convulsing violently under heavy leather restraints.

"Get out of the way!" the lead intern screamed, steering the floating gurney toward a side medical bay. "Clear the platform!"

Lyra immediately shifted her stance, her hand snapping to her rapier. "Stand firm," she ordered her guards.

Caelen, however, didn't draw a weapon. He stepped directly into the gurney’s path, forcing the interns to slam the magnetic brakes to avoid plowing into him.

"Are you insane?!" the lead intern shouted, wiping blood from his forehead with a sleeve. "This is an active bio-hazard case from the lower residential sectors! She’s experiencing acute vascular collapse!"

"She's not collapsing from a natural illness," Caelen said, his eyes narrowing as his kinetic vision instantly swept over the thrashing patient.

A translucent diagnostic mesh overlaid the young woman’s body in his vision. Her abdominal wall was dark, swollen, and radiating a sickly purple heat beneath her clothes. Deep within her mesenteric arteries, tiny crystalline deposits were rapidly multiplying, cutting off oxygen to her lower organs.

[ TARGET DETECTED: Female (Age 19, Lower Precinct Resident) ]

[ DIAGNOSIS: Acute Nightshade-Chrono Strain B Intoxication ]

[ CAUSE: Ingestion of contaminated food/water supply within past 6 hours ]

[ IMPENDING DEATH: 00 : 08 : 42 ]

[ STATUS: Critical vascular calcification; secondary toxic shock ]

Caelen’s eyes hardened into ice. The Poison Guild hadn't just targetted the freshmen at the banquet. They were already testing the strain on the lower residential sectors to gauge the mortality rate before the grand harvest.

"Where did you pick her up?" Caelen demanded, grabbing the lead intern by his blood-stained collar.

"The... the Lower Market Sector," the intern stammered, terrified by the sheer intensity in Caelen's dark eyes. "She collapsed at a bakery! Dozens of others are falling sick in the slums right now! The Guild told us to transport the early cases to the Upper District isolation wards for 'examination'!"

"They aren't examining her," Caelen growled, releasing the man's shirt. "They’re collecting her baseline data to calculate the exact dosage needed to wipe out the students upstairs."

He turned to the gurney, unhooking the leather restraints with two rapid flicks of his fingers.

"What are you doing?!" the intern yelled. "You can't touch an isolation patient without Guild clearance!"

"She has eight minutes to live," Caelen snapped. "If you take her to the Guild’s isolation ward, she’ll be dead before you reach the third floor, and her remaining hours will be siphoned into their corporate account."

He reached into his satchel, pulling out a silver syringe kit and a small vial of highly concentrated atropine-based reagent he had extracted from the lab earlier.

"Lyra, secure this platform," Caelen ordered, leaning over the gurney. "No one leaves, and no one calls the Upper Security desk."

"You're going to operate right here on a transit platform?" Lyra asked, her eyebrows pulling together, though she immediately gestured to her guards to form a perimeter around the medical bay entrance.

"Disease doesn't wait for an operating room, Officer," Caelen said.

He ripped open the patient's silver blanket, exposing her abdomen. Without hesitation, he located her femoral artery by touch alone, his fingers sinking into the tissue with absolute precision. He held the syringe at a seventy-degree angle, driving the silver needle directly into her vascular line.

[ KINETIC SURGICAL VISION: ACTIVATED ]

[ TARGETING: Mesenteric Arterial Blockage ]

The world around Caelen slowed to a crawl. The frantic shouts of the interns, the hum of the platform lights, and the distant murmur of the city faded into absolute silence. In his mind's eye, he mapped the movement of the liquid reagent as it flooded her bloodstream, chasing the dark purple crystals of the Nightshade toxin.

"Hold her shoulders!" Caelen commanded the lead intern.

The intern, paralyzed by Caelen's terrifying aura of authority, immediately dropped to his knees and pinned the young woman’s arms to the gurney.

Caelen took a small, curved lancet from his cart, making a lightning-fast, two-inch micro-incision near her lower right abdomen. He didn't cut deep enough to trigger severe bleeding; instead, he inserted a narrow silver drainage tube directly into the localized fluid pocket surrounding her swollen mesenteric vessels.

Sizzzzle!

A thick, dark purple fluid hissed as it drained through the tube, pooling into a glass collection jar Caelen held beneath the gurney. The moment the pressurized toxic fluid escaped her body, the young woman’s violent convulsions stopped. Her back relaxed against the mattress, and she pulled a long, deep, shuddering breath into her lungs.

Above her forehead, her pale blue counter—which had been flickering at a desperate [ 00 Days : 01 Hour : 12 Minutes ]—stabilized and began to climb back up as her body’s vital functions restored:

[ 14 Years : 02 Months : 11 Days ]

The three interns stood frozen, their mouths agape as they stared at the rising counter.

"He... he reversed a terminal vascular collapse in four minutes..." one of them whispered in utter disbelief. "Without a stasis field? Without an automated surgical rig?"

Caelen capped the collection jar containing the dark purple toxin, tossing it to Lyra. She caught it deftly, holding the glass up to the light. The thick, viscous liquid swirled with tiny, shimmering silver specks—the exact same color as the residue found on the black Poison Guild cardstock.

"That's our proof," Caelen said, wiping his scalpels clean with an antiseptic cloth and slipping them back into his coat. "The same toxin being tested on the lower sector citizens is about to be served in the inaugural wine casks at the banquet."

Lyra’s face turned to stone. She looked at the young woman on the gurney, who was now breathing peacefully, then down at the bottle of dark poison in her hand.

"They're poisoning the slums to refine the weapon, and poisoning the nobles to harvest the wealth," Lyra said, her voice dripping with lethal anger. "Sterling and his Guild allies aren't just corrupt. They’re running a slaughterhouse."

"And tonight, the slaughterhouse closes," Caelen said, stepping toward the private elevator. He pressed his palm against the brass panel, overriding the security locks with the master key-rune he had taken from Officer Marcus at the transit gate.

The heavy brass doors slid open with a deep, echoing tone.

"Officer Vance," Caelen said, looking back at her as he stepped into the elevator cabin. "Are your men ready to crash a party?"

Lyra drew her rapier halfway from its sheath, the blade glowing with a sharp, lethal blue light that illuminated her storm-gray eyes.

"Doctor," she replied, stepping into the elevator beside him as her twelve guards marched in behind them, "I've been waiting to crash this party for six years."

The brass doors slid shut, and the elevator surged upward toward the grand ballroom of the Timeless Elite.
