The Inquisitor’s Scalpel

The morning fog hanging over Sector 9 did not burn away with the sunrise; it thickened, turning a cold, oily gray as rain began to fall in heavy, rhythmic sheets.

Inside the newly minted Sector 9 Emergency Clinic, the air smelled of iodine, boiling river water, and clean linen.

Caelen Voss stood behind the heavy wooden counter, his coat sleeves rolled past his forearms. His hands—encased in thin, sterile rubber gloves—moved with terrifying, mechanical speed. In three hours, he had examined sixty-four patients. He had cleared two bronchial occlusions, set three fractured compound tibias, and neutralized seventeen cases of early-stage Chrono-Rot using localized intravenous alkali flushes.

Not a single hour of life-span had been taken. Not a single contract had been signed.

"Doctor," Tim, the young assistant, called out, wiping sweat from his forehead as he hauled a fresh tub of boiled bandages from the back room. "The queue outside... it’s not shrinking. Word reached Sector 10. There are at least four hundred people waiting in the rain."

"Then we keep working," Caelen said without looking up, using a silver forcep to draw a jagged iron splinter from a dockworker's forearm. "Tim, swap the alcohol basins. Lyra, how is the perimeter?"

Officer Lyra Vance leaned against the thick stone frame of the front entrance, her navy coat draped loosely over her shoulders. Her rapier remained unsheathed, its tip resting lightly on the damp floorboards. Her gray eyes scanned the crowded plaza with an intensity that kept the waiting crowd orderly.

"The crowd is calm, Voss," Lyra said softly, her voice carrying over the sound of the rain. "But the air is wrong."

Caelen paused, dropping the iron splinter into a metal tray with a soft clink. "Wrong how?"

"The local gang scouts—the Bone-Saws who usually hustle these corners—they vanished twenty minutes ago," Lyra replied, turning her head slightly to look down the main avenue. "And the street vendors just abandoned their stalls. When the lower slum rats run for cover, it means a heavy predator is stepping into the alley."

Before Caelen could answer, a sudden, unnatural silence fell over the Iron Market square.

The four hundred waiting citizens stopped murmuring. The rain, which had been hammering against the cobblestones, seemed to muffle, as if a heavy velvet curtain had been dropped over the entire sector.

From the northern avenue leading toward the Upper Spire, three figures emerged through the gray mist.

They wore long, heavy coats made of dark, iron-plated leather, tailored so tightly they resembled sleek suits of armor. Across their shoulders hung white mantles embroidered with a silver skull pierced by a balance scale—the terrifying mark of the Imperial Inquisitorial Executioners.

The man in the center stepped with deliberate, measured weight. He was tall, gaunt, and possessed skin so pale it looked translucent under the dim sky. Where his left eye should have been, a complex, brass-ringed optical lens rotated rhythmically, clicking as it focused on the clinic building.

High Inquisitor Vane.

Above Vane’s head, a deep, blood-crimson counter burned with an eerie, steady light:

[ 310 Years : 02 Months : 14 Days ]

Behind him walked two Executioner Specialists, carrying heavy, double-barreled time-compression rifles that hummed with a terrifying, low-frequency vibration.

The four hundred slum residents gasped in collective horror.

"Executioners..." an old woman whimpered, pulling her grandchild into an alleyway. "The High Council sent the purifiers..."

Within ten seconds, the plaza emptied. Frightened citizens scrambled into side streets, barricading themselves behind wooden shutters and rusted iron doors. Only Caelen’s small team remained in the square—standing inside the open doors of the stone clinic.

Lieutenant Harrow and Lieutenant Kael immediately stepped into the doorway, their heavy halberds raised, their faces set in grim stone.

"Officer Vance," High Inquisitor Vane spoke, his voice sounding like two dry slate tiles sliding against one another. It was quiet, yet it resonated inside the eardrums of everyone present. "Step away from the fugitive. You are in violation of Imperial Security Code 9."

Lyra didn't step back. She stepped forward, standing directly on the wooden threshold of the clinic, her rapier igniting with a sharp, lethal blue mana-aura.

"Inquisitor Vane," Lyra countered, her voice ringing clear across the empty plaza. "This facility is operating under emergency public health protocols. We have neutralized a biological weapon deployed by the Poison Guild and saved over six hundred citizens. I suggest you return to the Upper Spire and report to the Grand Council."

Vane stopped thirty feet from the clinic doors. His brass optical lens clicked, expanding as it scanned Lyra's chest.

"Fascinating," Vane whispered, his thin lips curling into a dry, humorless smile. "Officer Vance... your medical files listed you as terminally degraded. Vascular crystallization. Estimated expiration: forty-eight hours. Yet your arterial pressure is optimal, and your life-span counter stands at forty-two years."

The brass lens shifted, locking squarely onto Caelen, who was calmly stepping out from behind the counter, holding a clean surgical towel in his hands.

"Caelen Voss," Vane continued, his voice dropping an octave into pure, frigid steel. "The man who cured an uncurable vascular collapse, executed Chief Director Valerius, destroyed a Guild bio-refinery, and stole three hundred years of authorized Imperial capital in less than twelve hours."

"I didn't steal capital, Inquisitor," Caelen said, walking slowly past Lyra and stepping out onto the wet cobblestones of the plaza. He wiped his hands dry, tossing the towel to Tim. "I confiscated contraband. Valerius and Malakor were running an illegal mass-harvesting operation using an unrefined strain of Chrono-Rot."

"It does not matter what they were running," Vane said flatly. "The Guild is the law. The Bank is the balance. You are an unsanctioned anomaly disrupting the life-span economy of this continent."

Vane raised his right hand. The two Executioner Specialists behind him instantly raised their double-barreled rifles, aiming the glowing blue muzzles directly at Caelen's chest.

"Protocol Zero-Hour is active," Vane declared quietly. "Sector 9 is declared a bio-hazardous quarantine zone. All personnel inside this facility are to be liquidated. Their hours will be reclaimed by the Imperial Treasury."

"Try it," Lyra snarled, her rapier whistling through the air as she took a high combat guard.

"Wait, Lyra," Caelen commanded softly.

He took three calm steps forward, standing alone in the center of the rain-slick plaza between the Inquisitors and his allies.

Caelen’s dark eyes locked onto Vane’s rotating brass optical lens.

[ KINETIC SURGICAL VISION: ACTIVATED ]

[ DIAGNOSTIC JUDGMENT: INITIATED ]

A translucent crimson grid exploded across Caelen’s vision, piercing straight through Vane’s heavy iron-plated coat, through his sternum, and into his vital organs.

[ TARGET DETECTED: High Inquisitor Vane ]

[ PATHOLOGY FOUND: Mechanical Ocular Graft Rejection & Latent Cerebral Abscess ]

[ CAUSE: Unsanctioned cybernetic-mana integration (Left Temporal Lobe) ]

[ IMPENDING COLLAPSE: 00 : 14 : 32 ]

[ CURRENT STATUS: Acute localized inflammation; severe motor-cortex pressure ]

Caelen’s lips curled into a razor-sharp, dangerous smile.

"Inquisitor Vane," Caelen said, his voice terrifyingly calm despite the two heavy rifles pointed at his heart. "You came here to execute me. But you have roughly fourteen minutes before that cheap brass lens in your left eye causes a fatal cerebral hemorrhage."

Vane’s brass optical lens froze mid-rotation.

For the first time, a flicker of genuine shock crossed the Inquisitor's pale, emotionless face.

"What did you say?" Vane rasped.

"Your left temple," Caelen said, pointing a single gloved finger at his own head. "It's throbbing at 120 beats a minute. You’ve been taking heavy mana-suppressants every four hours to stop the muscle spasms in your left arm. You think it's just 'adaptation strain' from your mechanical graft."

Caelen took another step forward, his voice cutting through the sound of the falling rain like a razor.

"It isn't adaptation strain, Vane. The metal casing on that brass optical lens is corroding into your left temporal lobe. In fourteen minutes, the abscess behind your eye will rupture. You won't execute anyone today. You'll die on these cobblestones, gasping for air while your own brain liquefies."

The two Executioner Specialists looked at their commander in sudden, frantic confusion. They knew Vane had been secretly visiting the High Guild’s private surgical wards every week—a secret that was supposed to be classified under Level 5 Imperial Security.

Vane’s left hand, which had been resting on his sword hilt, began to twitch violently. A sharp, searing spasm of agony shot through his left eye, causing his breath to hitch sharply in his throat.

[ COUNTDOWN: 00 : 13 : 15 ]

"Lie... lies..." Vane gritted out through clenched teeth, though sweat was suddenly pouring down his pale cheeks. "A desperate parlor trick... Guards! Fire!"

The two Specialists hesitated for a fraction of a second—just long enough for Caelen to act.

"Lyra, now!" Caelen roared.

Lyra didn't need another word. She moved like liquid lightning, her rapier flashing in a blinding arc of blue energy.

SLASH!

The blue mana-wave severed the barrels of both time-compression rifles in a single strike. The heavy weapons exploded into harmless sparks, throwing the two Specialists backward onto the wet cobblestones.

Before Vane could draw his own blade, Caelen closed the distance. His kinetic vision accelerated his perception to absolute perfection.

He didn't hit Vane with a fist. He reached out with two fingers, driving them with terrifying precision into the pressure point right behind Vane’s left jawbone—the exact nerve bundle feeding into his corroded temporal graft!

"AAAAGGGHH!"

Vane let out a bloodcurdling scream as a wave of excruciating neurological shock paralyzed his entire left side. He dropped to his knees in the mud, clutching his face as his mechanical eye spun wildly out of control, emitting a thin wisp of acrid black smoke.

Caelen stood over the kneeling Inquisitor, his dark eyes glowing with a cold, terrifying authority.

He leaned down, whispering into Vane’s ear:

"I am the only doctor on this continent who can remove that graft without killing you, Inquisitor. Now... do you want to talk about Protocol Zero-Hour, or do you want to die in twelve minutes?"
