Adam Swift's POV

The revolving doors of the Grand Imperial Hotel turned slowly as guests continued to arrive. Luxury cars lined the entrance. Camera flashes illuminated the evening.

Reporters hurried from one influential guest to another, eager to capture the country's wealthiest businessmen and politicians.

The hotel itself was magnificent. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, their light reflecting across polished marble floors. Elegant flower arrangements decorated every corner, while soft classical music drifted through the enormous lobby.

Everything about the evening spoke of prestige. Power. Influence.

I adjusted the collar of my black suit before stepping out of the vehicle. Dax followed a few steps behind. Neither of us attracted much attention.

Among the countless wealthy guests entering the hotel, we blended into the crowd.

"Security?" I asked quietly.

Dax glanced around without moving his head. "Heavy."

I followed his gaze. Uniformed guards stood at every entrance. Private security agents patrolled the ballroom. Plain-clothes officers mingled with the guests, carefully watching every movement.

William Hayes clearly valued protection. Or perhaps… Someone else inside required it. We entered the lobby.

Immediately, the atmosphere changed. Businessmen laughed as they exchanged handshakes. Government officials discussed new investment projects. Journalists rushed between interviews.

Waiters carrying silver trays moved gracefully through the crowd, offering glasses of champagne and expensive wine. It looked less like a charity gala and more like a gathering of the country's elite. Dax leaned closer.

"The Hayes family is hosting tonight's fundraiser."

I nodded. "I know."

He looked at me. "So what exactly are we looking for?"

I answered without hesitation. "The truth."

Nothing else mattered. Not rumors. Not assumptions. Only the truth.

We walked deeper into the ballroom. A massive stage stood at the far end of the hall. Above it hung a banner celebrating the Hayes Foundation's annual charity banquet.

Guests applauded politely as another speaker finished thanking the sponsors. I barely listened. My attention remained elsewhere. Scanning. Observing. Searching. Then...

I saw him. Ethan Hayes. He stood beside William Hayes, greeting guests with calm confidence. Unlike the other young heirs laughing loudly around him, Ethan remained reserved.

He smiled politely. Shook hands. Listened more than he spoke. There was something different about him. Something familiar. Not his appearance. His mannerisms.

The way he stood with his hands behind his back.

The slight tilt of his head whenever someone spoke to him. The quiet habit of observing a room before entering it. Tiny details. Details no one else would notice. But I did. Because once upon a time...

A little boy had done exactly the same things. I felt my heartbeat quicken. No. Stay calm. Ten years change people. Hope can make strangers look familiar. I refused to let emotion cloud my judgment.

"General." Dax's voice broke my thoughts. "You've been staring."

"I know."

"Do you think it's him?"

I looked away. "I don't know."

And that uncertainty frustrated me more than anything. A round of applause echoed through the ballroom.

William Hayes stepped onto the stage. The room gradually fell silent.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he began warmly, "thank you for joining us tonight."

His speech was simple. He spoke about education. Hospitals. Helping disadvantaged families.nEverything about the man seemed genuine. No arrogance. No unnecessary display of wealth. Just quiet dignity.

As the audience applauded again, I noticed Ethan standing alone near one of the pillars. For the first time that evening, he wasn't surrounded by guests. He looked… Lonely.

Almost as though he didn't belong among the crowd. He stared through one of the ballroom windows toward the city lights beyond.nHis expression was distant. Lost.

A strange feeling settled in my chest. I have worn that same expression countless times over the past ten years. The expression of someone carrying memories they could never share. Without thinking, I took a step toward him. Then stopped. Not yet.

If Derek had told the truth… If Ethan truly was Taylor… Rushing this moment could destroy everything. I needed proof. Not emotion.

Across the room, Ethan suddenly frowned. Slowly… His eyes lifted. For the briefest moment… Our gazes met. Neither of us moved. The noise around us faded. The applause. The conversations. The music. Everything disappeared. He looked at me with quiet curiosity. Not fear. Not recognition. Just curiosity. As though something about me seemed strangely familiar.

A waiter walked between us carrying a tray of drinks. The moment he passed… Ethan looked away.

Another group of guests approached him, pulling him back into conversation. The moment was gone.

Dax exhaled quietly. "Interesting."

I nodded once. "He felt it."

"You think so?"

"I don't know why..." My eyes remained fixed on Ethan across the ballroom. "...but for a second..." I paused. "...it felt like he was trying to remember someone."

Outside, thunder rolled softly across the night sky. Inside the ballroom, the gala continued as though nothing had happened. But deep inside me… For the first time in ten years… Hope no longer felt impossible. It felt close enough to touch.
