By the time Mara left the room that evening, Rylan had already closed himself off, clearly deciding he wasn't going to continue the conversation.

Kelvin didn't force him to talk.

Whatever heavy truth Rylan had been about to reveal regarding Antherion could wait. He could see how much the memories took out of his friend.

Eventually, they both turned in, and the dorm sank back into a heavy silence.

The next morning arrived, Kelvin woke to the familiar sound of Rylan rustling around the small room. “Wake up,” Rylan called out, tossing a shoe toward Kelvin's bed. Kelvin groaned loudly, pulling the thick blanket straight over his face. “Get up before I sprinkle water on your face,” Rylan said pointing at him. “Can you let me sleep a little,” Kelvin muttered, his voice muffled by the fabric. Rylan let out a dramatic sigh. “Fine. I'll just head down to the courtyard and tell Mara you refused to get out of bed.” Kelvin instantly kicked off the blanket and sat upright, his

  • CHAPTER 36 — RYLAN'S STORY

The room fell completely silent when Rylan finally spoke. Kelvin sat quietly on the edge of his bed, his eyes fixed on his friend, watching every subtle shift in his expression. Rylan stood near the stone window frame, his arms wrapped tightly across his chest. The teasing, careless smile that usually lit up his face was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, heavy shadow. “My family was happy,” Rylan began, his voice surprisingly soft. Kelvin stayed still, not wanting to break the moment. Rylan stared out at the twilight sky. “I mean really, truly happy. We weren't wealthy or anything, but we never felt like we were missing much. My parents loved each other. My younger sister was always getting into mischief, and my mother somehow found a way to blame me for almost everything she broke.” A faint, sympathetic smile touched Kelvin's lips. “I can relate to that,I also have younger ones.” Rylan let out a soft, breathy chuckle. “She broke a plate once and swore up and down to my mothe

  • CHAPTER 35 — TRUST

The next morning passed without anything unusual happening. Kelvin almost felt relieved by that. After breakfast, he and Rylan returned to their usual classes with Mara,Raze and the other students. The Tower felt like itself again. Students complained about assignments, teachers moved between classrooms, and the corridors stayed crowded throughout the morning. Kelvin made a conscious decision not to behave differently around Rylan. He didn't watch him constantly. He didn't question every movement. He didn't study his expressions looking for hidden meaning. He simply treated him the way he always had. When Rylan made a stupid joke, Kelvin laughed. When Rylan complained about the amount of work they had been given, Kelvin told him to stop complaining. When Rylan tried to copy one of Kelvin's notes, Kelvin moved his book away. Everything was normal. At least, Kelvin tried to make it normal. Rylan noticed. He didn't say anything during the first class. He di

  • CHAPTER 34 : BETWEEN FRIENDS

For several minutes after Adrain left, neither Kelvin nor Rylan spoke. The room had become strangely quiet. Kelvin sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the drawer where he had hidden the parchment. The words were no longer visible, but they remained in his mind. DON'T TRUST YOUR ROOMMATE. He hated how easily four words could get inside his head. Rylan was already lying on his mattress, one arm behind his head as he stared at the ceiling. “You're thinking about it again,” Rylan said softly, his voice cutting through the silence. Kelvin looked over at him. “How do you know?” “Because you've been staring at that drawer for almost a minute.” Kelvin looked away, letting out a heavy breath. “I can't help it,” Kelvin admitted. “I know,” Rylan replied, his tone growing quieter, free of its usual teasing edge. Kelvin rubbed his hands together, staring down at his floorboards. “Adrain said we shouldn't let fear make our decisions for us.” “Your guardian sounds like he gives good

  • CHAPTER 33:THE WARNING

Three slow knocks echoed from the other side of the locked door. Knock.Knock.Knock. Kelvin and Rylan stared at each other, their bodies going completely rigid. Neither moved. The parchment remained resting between them on the table, its four words still glaringly visible: DON'T TRUST YOUR ROOMMATE. Another knock came. This one was lighter, softer against the thick wood. Rylan swallowed hard, his throat dry. “Did you tell anyone about this?” he whispered. Kelvin shook his head quickly. “No.” “Neither did I,” Rylan murmured, his breathing uneven. They both turned their heads, looking toward the door. Rylan slowly approached it, his steps cautious and quiet, while Kelvin remained near his bed, watching his roommate carefully. “Who is it?” Rylan called out, his voice tense. There was no answer. Rylan frowned and looked back at Kelvin, uncertainty pooling in his eyes. “Maybe it's someone looking for Raze.” Kelvin's expression changed instantly. “Raze isn't her

  • CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO:NEVER TRUST YOUR ROOMMATE

A loud, sharp knock rattled the door, followed by Rylan’s impatient voice.“Kelvin, get up!”Kelvin opened his eyes, staring blankly at the ceiling for a moment before turning toward the door. “I’m awake.”“but you're still on bed!” Rylan shot back, already dressed with his bag slung over one shoulder.Kelvin groaned, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed and rubbing the sleep from his face. “What do we have today?”“Practical Science.”Kelvin sighed, reaching reluctantly for his uniform. A heavy, familiar knot of anxiety tightened in his stomach—practical sessions rarely ended well for him.Rylan offered a sympathetic grin. “Don't look so terrified, Kelvin. You might actually enjoy it for once.”“I’ll believe that when I make it out in one piece,” Kelvin muttered, following him into the hallway. The corridors were busy with the morning rush, a sea of students talking and hurrying toward their respective wings. By the time they reached the science hall, the room was nearly full.
