“Valen, authorize the Vampire Drain protocol on that woman’s clinic sub-sector. Do not siphon their lifespans instantly. Do it systematically, in increments. Let the digital timer on that woman's wrist bleed out one hour for every ten minutes that pass.”

Valen snapped his head up, his eyes widening as the sheer sadism of his father’s strategy sank in. “You want to torture her from a distance just to shatter Axel’s focus during the hack?”

“Precisely,” Adrian murmured, returning his gaze to the glass window. “Axel wears that rigid black coat to conceal the reality that he still harbors a residual scrap of humanity in his chest. And that very humanity will be the noose that hangs him.”

Adrian’s inner monologue echoed through the suffocating silence of the room: Did you honestly believe you could defeat him with weapons, Valen? No. Axel can only be destroyed if you make his own choices feel like a mistake. I am the one who molded him, and I know the exact frequency required to make him crack.

Adrian waved his hand, gesturing for the guards to drag Valen out of his sight. The moment the doors slid shut, Adrian stared at the digital numbers on the screen as they began their relentless countdown for the lower sub-sector.

The ultimate psychological warfare had been initiated, and Adrian knew that Axel had very few choices left but to accelerate his own suicide mission.

Every single tick of the clock in the Lower District now sounded like the solemn toll of a funeral bell.

Inside the subterranean bunker of the logistics barracks, Axel stood before the primary cyber-console, slamming the silver encryption cube he had ripped from Valen into the terminal slot. Beside him, Rhea’s fingers danced across the virtual keyboard with blinding speed, systematically tearing through the reactor firewalls of the Eternity Tower. 18 Days, 02 Hours, 14 Minutes.

That was the remaining time etched onto Axel’s wrist. Yet, his tactical focus tonight was shattered by something far more horrific.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

A sudden, high-frequency alert blared from Rhea’s left wrist. Axel whipped his head around. There, the glowing green digital numbers on Rhea’s flesh were spinning backward at an unnatural, violent velocity. An entire hour of her lifespan vanished in the span of a mere ten minutes. 02 Days, 14 Hours, 20 Minutes. 02 Days, 13 Hours, 20 Minutes.

“Adrian...” Axel whispered, his jaw clenching so fiercely that the veins in his neck bulged. His right hand instinctively gripped the handle of the Life Reaper Gun hidden beneath his black tactical frock coat. “He’s deploying the Vampire Drain wirelessly through the sub-sector grid.”

Rhea gasped, her face draining of color as a wave of sudden, biological exhaustion clawed at her cells from the forced extraction of her time. Yet, she refused to tear her hands away from the cyber-console.

“Don’t... don't stop, Axel!” Rhea cried out, her voice trembling as she fought through the mounting vertigo in her head. “If you pull that cube now to sever the local network, the reactor encryption we've breached ninety percent of will automatically reset! Every sacrifice Marcus made will be for nothing!”

“You’ll be dead within hours if this continues, Rhea,” Axel said, his voice, usually as unyielding as ice, now vibrating with the storm of suppressed raw emotion raging in his chest.

Axel’s inner monologue churned violently beneath his stiff black coat: The old bastard knew. Adrian knew I wouldn't care if he sent an entire army down here. So he tortures Rhea from his high tower instead, using her as an anchor to paralyze my movements. He wants me to abandon this key and come crawling to beg at his feet.

“I’ve lived on the razor's edge of death my entire life, Axel,” Rhea said, looking up at him with fading eyes that nonetheless burned with a fierce, stubborn defiance. She gripped the rigid fabric of Axel’s black tactical coat with her trembling fingers. “For the longest time, I thought you were just a selfish prick who abandoned this district for the luxury upstairs. But after seeing what you’ve sacrificed... seeing how you carry the weight of your mother’s death completely alone... I won’t let Adrian win again. Finish the hack!”

Witnessing Rhea’s vulnerability fused with such absolute resolve shattered something long dead inside Axel’s chest. The heavily armored man drew a deep, long breath, locking away his guilt and fury, forging them into a single laser-focused stream of cold energy.

He couldn't halt the extraction from down here. The only way to save Rhea was to systematically destroy the power source from above.

“Hold on for three more minutes, Rhea,” Axel commanded, his voice shifting back into the absolute cadence of a military order.

Axel commandeered half of the virtual interface, punching in his proprietary military bypass protocols (AXEL-01) to reroute a portion of the cybernetic radiation load away from Rhea's body and into the internal systems of his tactical coat, leveraging its energy-dampening kevlar lining.

02 Days, 10 Hours... The countdown on Rhea’s wrist slowed to a crawl, but in exchange, the clock on Axel’s arm instantly hemorrhaged a brutal five days of life in a single flash. 13 Days, 02 Hours, 14 Minutes.

Axel’s chest felt as though it had been struck by a kinetic shockwave, forcing a sharp, metallic cough of blood to the corner of his lips. He wiped it away cleanly with the cuff of his black sleeve before Rhea could notice.

BEEP!

The console screens suddenly flared into a vibrant, solid emerald. A circular graphic materialized with a definitive readout: ACCESS GRANTED. FREIGHT ELEVATOR OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL.

“It's done,” Rhea whispered before her body went completely limp, slipping from the chair. Axel caught her shoulders instantly, stabilizing her weight.

Axel stared at the terminal display, then locked his gaze onto the heavy steel bulkhead behind them that sealed the freight elevator shaft leading directly to the tower’s peak. The gates to hell were wide open. He had thirteen days left to live, and Rhea’s time was tracked in mere hours. There was no more room for retreat, no more space for safe strategies.

Axel gently laid Rhea down on the barracks' makeshift cot, placing the cyber-control cube within her reach. Buttoning his black tactical frock coat tightly up to his throat, he stood tall beneath the dim, flickering light, fully prepared to ignite an all-out war on the upper floors.

BZZZZZT. WHUSH!An icy gale roared continuously across the upper troposphere, a howling vortex of atmospheric pressure five thousand meters above the shattered surface of The Outlands. The air up here was razor-thin, bone-chilling, and stripped clean of the biological pathogens that infected the lands below. Down beneath the thick blanket of artificial smog, the ruins of Sector 5 and its withered biological monstrosities were nothing more than a forgotten memory.Suddenly, two dark silhouettes cut cleanly through the dense cloud layer.Axel and Rhea descended in a synchronized, high-altitude tactical freefall. Their movements were executed with micro-second accuracy, their trajectory locked straight onto the massive upper foundation canopy of the Void Array launch tower.BOOM!Axel’s heavy tactical boots slammed down onto the polished reinforced titanium plating of the foundation structure, instantly dispersing the kinetic shockwave through his lower body circuitry.
