There was an instant bustle of chatter in the room.

"Oh my God!"

"David, is this true?!"

"Where is she?"

"Our prayers have been answered!"

"Settle down, brothers," Lazarus announced. "Let me share the information with you."

Elijah was as much surprised by the revelation as the rest. Yet, he was confused about how he fit into the puzzle. What did the discovery of Eve's bloodline actually mean?

"Except for my boy Elijah, others in this room know of the powers belonging to someone from Eve's bloodline."

"Powers?" the lawyer asked.

"Powers, yes. A female who is a direct descendant of Eve is immortal. She cannot die."

Elijah gave a start. He was okay with the belief system, but the discussion had gotten really weird, really fast. Immortality?

"From the look on your face, I can judge you are having trouble digesting this. I understand your skepticism. In fact, it would be strange if you were not cynical about what I just said," Lazarus directed at Elijah.

The lawyer's eyebrows shot up in genuine surprise. "I have gone through your litigation proforma. Your stepsister, Scarlet Palmer, is your opponent. Do you think she is behind these attempts on your life?""Probably. I don't know. But not just her. Never mind. It's complicated. There's—""Ahem," Guiscard interrupted, clearing his throat pointedly. He realized his rudeness and extended a hand to Elijah. "I'm Chevalier de Guiscard. Pleased to make your acquaintance, Mr. Wood.""The pleasure is mine," Elijah replied, shaking his hand with a firm grip. Their exchange was polite on the surface, but Ashley sensed an undercurrent of tension. Two alpha males sizing each other up in a silent standoff."Kindly keep nothing from me, Mr. Guiscard," the attorney said once the bodyguard was seated. "I just got a message from the accounts department. I am Ashley's lawyer-on-retainer now. An advance payment has already been made, activating attorney-client privilege.""Very well," Guiscard conceded,

Ashley took a deep breath. "Fair enough. To tell you the truth, I don't know every threat that awaits me. They come suddenly and unexpectedly, and I am left to think on my feet.""That must be quick thinking because I have never seen a defenseless girl survive both the mafia and hired goons. You must have a gift for survival."Ashley sniggered sarcastically. "It's more like a curse, in my opinion.""Well, it's my job right now that you don't face the dangers alone, with or without the curse.""Thank you.""Unnecessary. I'm doing my job."Ashley shook her head. "No, really, Chevy. Nobody else other than you has shared in my troubles yet." She felt her eyes moisten. "I don't understand why you did not ask Jake about his tiff with the Zetelica," Guiscard asked, changing the subject."It's complicated." Guiscard sighed. "Understood." They had almost reached Macintosh Square. Ashley went over the day's plan, the most significant of which was Guiscard's plan to catch the masked men. He h

"LEAH UHTCEARE EVEGACA," were the words that Evelyn Palmer had whispered into her daughter's ears in the dream.'Nah, it wasn't a dream. All this happening around me is too real to be a dream.' Ashley told herself."It's all for a purpose," her mother had added without further explanation.'What could dying over and over achieve?' Ashley wondered. She had already experienced bursts of physical pain and mental anguish more than a person could endure in an entire lifetime. It had hardened and seasoned her to pain, but for what purpose?'What doesn't kill you–wait, that's not applicable here,' she told herself stupidly.“Leah Uhtceare Evegaca.” Ashley had no idea what the cryptic words meant. They did not sound like any language she knew. Even though she could speak seven culturally unique languages, the words were foreign to her. A Google search had not turned up anything. LEAH appeared to be a name. The other words seemed like gibberish. She decided to deal with the mystery later. It

"Of course, we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden–the woman replied. It's only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said–you must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.""You won't die!- the serpent replied to the woman. God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil."Cardinal David Lazarus looked up from his reading at the small crowd of thirty gathered in the pew. He was behind the pulpit of the north chapel, making a concluding remark after the mass. The stained glass and rose windows on either side of the hall depicted various biblical figures and events. The murals were unique, the most eye-catching being a tall depiction of Eve under the forbidden tree. She held a half-eaten apple in her hand. There was no Adam in the image. "My friends, Eve took a bite of the apple as Satan instructed," David continued. "It was no sin. In fact, it wa
