Damian's company is at its peak, with Nathaniel, his oldest friend and co-founder, at his side. Then millions vanish, and every trail leads to Damian. Nathaniel testifies against him, the board ousts him, and his allies disappear. Charges stall for lack of proof, but his name is ruined. With one loyal ally, Damian takes on a humble identity and enters an arranged marriage with Clara, whose family needs a quick, harmless husband. In their home he is mocked and underestimated, which is exactly the cover he needs. In secret, he builds a new network and strikes at Nathaniel through anonymous moves: a collapsed deal, a leaked scandal, a cracked reputation. Clara slowly notices what doesn't add up, and her pity turns to curiosity and trust. When Nathaniel realizes who is behind the attacks, he targets Clara's family, forcing Damian into the open. At a final public confrontation, Damian exposes the frame, destroys Nathaniel, and clears his name. Then he must face Clara with the truth he has hidden from her.

Chapter 1

The Deal of a Lifetime

The pen felt heavier than it should have.

Damian held it above the contract, and for a moment, the entire boardroom held its breath with him. Twenty floors above the city, the afternoon sun poured through the glass walls and lit the table like a stage.

Cameras flashed softly from the corner of the room. Across the table, the investors waited with the calm patience of men who had already decided to say yes. The contract was thirty-two pages long, and he could have recited every clause from memory. That didn't make his hand any steadier.

Twelve years. That was how long it had taken to get here.

Twelve years of eating instant noodles in a rented garage. Twelve years of pitches that ended in polite smiles and closed doors. Twelve years of believing, when no one else did, that Vantage Ridge could become something.

There had been nights he'd slept on the garage floor because the rent was due and the lights were not. There had been a winter he'd worn the same coat for three years, a spring he'd skipped lunch every day to make payroll for two employees. Nathaniel had been there for all of it, pushing half a sandwich across the table and saying nothing, because some friendships didn't need words.

He signed.

The room erupted. Executives stood and applauded, the investors from overseas shook hands with each other, and someone near the back let out a whoop that was far too undignified for a billion-dollar signing.

Damian stood in the middle of the noise and felt oddly still. He had imagined this moment a thousand times, and in every version he had felt triumphant. Instead he felt something quieter, a tired gratitude, as if a weight he'd carried so long he'd forgotten it was there had finally been set down.

"Mr. Damian," the lead investor said, gripping his hand. "Congratulations. You've built something extraordinary."

"We built it," Damian said, and meant it. He turned his head. "Together."

Nathaniel stood at his shoulder, grinning.

He had been there at every step, quiet and steady, the kind of presence you stopped noticing the way you stop noticing your own heartbeat. Damian had never thanked him properly. He promised himself he would, soon.

They had met at nineteen, two broke students arguing over the last seat in a crowded library. Nathaniel had laughed first. He always laughed first. By the end of that night they were sharing a table, and by the end of that year they were sharing a dream.

"Don't give me that look," Nathaniel said, clapping him on the back. "You're the one who did the hard part. I just made sure you didn't forget to eat."

"You did more than that."

"Fine. I also kept the lawyers off your neck." Nathaniel's smile widened. "You're welcome."

Damian laughed. It was easy to laugh today.

As the crowd thinned, his assistant, Elena, appeared at his elbow with a tablet pressed to her chest and a grin she was clearly fighting.

"Sir, the press office has forty-one interview requests. Forty-one. And the board wants dinner on Friday."

"Tell them I'm busy."

"You're not busy on Friday."

"Tell them I'm busy," Damian repeated, smiling. "I'd like one evening where nobody wants to shake my hand."

Elena laughed. "Mr. Nathaniel already told me you'd say that. He said to clear your calendar and he'd handle the rest."

Of course he did. Damian shook his head, warmth spreading through his chest. Nathaniel always handled the rest.

By evening, the celebration had moved to the top floor of the Grand Meridian, a private room with a skyline view and a bottle of champagne that cost more than Damian's first car.

The staff had cleared out. The noise of the party drifted faintly from the ballroom below. Here, it was only the two of them.

On the table sat a small flat package wrapped in brown paper. Nathaniel nudged it across with one finger.

"Open it."

Inside was a frame, and in the frame, a coffee-stained napkin covered in cramped, hopeful handwriting: the first sketch of Vantage Ridge.

"You kept it?" Damian said quietly.

"Of course I kept it," Nathaniel replied. "Somebody had to."

Nathaniel poured two glasses and held one out.

"To the garage," he said.

"To the garage." Damian took the glass. "And to the idiot who believed in a napkin sketch."

"That idiot is a genius."

"That idiot was you."

They clinked glasses. The sound rang bright and clean in the quiet room.

Damian drank, then stood at the window. The city stretched out beneath him, a spill of gold lights in the dark. Somewhere down there was the old garage, now a parking structure, and somewhere beyond it was the apartment he'd once been evicted from.

Faint music rose from the ballroom below, a pulse of laughter and clinking glass. Hundreds of people were celebrating tonight, and most of them would never know the sleepless years behind the signature. He found he didn't mind. Some victories were louder in silence.

"Do you ever think about it?" he asked. "How close we came to quitting?"

"Every day." Nathaniel came to stand beside him. His voice was lighter than usual, almost careful. "That's why I never want to go back."

"We won't."

"No," Nathaniel agreed softly. "We won't."

Damian didn't notice that his friend wasn't looking at the city. He was looking at Damian's reflection in the glass.

It was past midnight when Damian's phone buzzed.

He was in the back of the car, loosening his tie, his head pleasantly light from the champagne. The message was from his assistant.

Sir, the transfer authorizations for tomorrow's acquisition payments are ready for your signature. Nathaniel said he'd already reviewed them.

Damian smiled.

Of course he had.

He typed a quick reply: Send them to my tablet. I'll sign in the morning.

The city slid past the tinted window in streaks of light. Somewhere in a quiet corner of his mind, he registered the odd emptiness of the apartment waiting for him: no one to tell, no one to share the news with except a doorman who would nod politely and ask if he needed anything. He had always told himself the company was enough. Tonight, for the first time, he wasn't entirely sure.

He leaned back and closed his eyes. In a few hours, Vantage Ridge would be the fastest-growing company in the country. In a few weeks, he would finally take a real vacation. In a few months, maybe, he would stop being so afraid of losing everything.

He had no reason to be afraid anymore.

He had his work. He had his company. And he had Nathaniel, the one person in the world he trusted without question.

The car turned onto the long, bright road home, and Damian fell asleep with a smile on his face.

He did not know it was the last night of the life he had built.
