Behind Soren, a burly man finished a phone call. Lucus Bennett. Dressed plain, but the way he stood made it obvious he wasn’t just some regular bodyguard.
Soren didn’t turn around. “Did you find out what was used on Charles?”
“Yes, sir.” Lucus’s voice went serious. “Our people got the investigation records. Traced the substance on the body. Hydrogen peroxide.”
Soren’s eyes narrowed a little. “Hydrogen peroxide?”
“Yes, sir. Concentration was extremely high. Not the kind people keep at home. It degraded the bones badly. Some parts of the remains had almost broken down. That’s one reason the investigators had so much trouble identifying him. DNA was compromised too. The lab had to work with whatever little biological material was left before they could confirm it was him.”
Soren stayed quiet.
His eyes stayed on Charles’s tombstone.
“Any suspects?” he asked.
Lucus shook his head. “Not yet. We checked every lead we could find. Whoever did this was careful. All the CCTV around where the body was found had been wiped. Cameras around the Anderson estate too—nothing showing Charles leaving the house that day.”
Soren’s eyes narrowed further. “Then look at the Anderson family.”
Lucus nodded right away. “Understood.”
Soren’s gaze went back to the tombstone. Charles had mentioned the family in that last letter. Warned him they were planning to kill him. Soren couldn’t ignore the chance that his brother’s death was tied to them.
Lucus lowered his head a little.
After a short silence he asked, “Sir, do we need to tell the media you’re back?”
Soren finally turned away from the tomb. “No.”
Lucus looked at him. “Should we at least let them know you’ve returned to Nucus?”
“No need.” Soren started walking toward the cemetery entrance without looking back. “If they want to wait, let them wait. I didn’t come back for their attention.”
Lucus lowered his head again. “Understood.”
They reached an ordinary black Jeep parked outside.
The Jeep pulled away from Nucus Memorial Cemetery and headed into the city.
Half an hour later the familiar streets came into view.
Soren had been gone more than ten years. The place had changed almost past recognition. Old buildings gone. New skyscrapers along the main roads. Streets he remembered as quiet neighborhoods now packed with businesses. Westland’s economy had grown fast while he was off fighting. Nucus had gone from a relatively small city to one of the country’s busiest modern centers.
Cars everywhere. People hurrying between buildings. Big commercial districts where quieter places used to be.
But Charles was still dead.
No matter how tall the buildings got or how prosperous the city looked, none of it changed that.
Years earlier, when the war had pushed right up to Westland’s borders, the country had been on the edge. Enemy forces had crossed in. Thousands of soldiers sent out to hold the line. Soren had taken command of the naval forces assigned to the fight and led them through battle after battle.
They’d fought for months.
A lot of men never came back.
He’d watched soldiers under him die and kept leading anyway until Westland finally pushed the invaders back across the border.
After the victory he’d been ready to come home and see Charles again. He never got the chance.
Soren leaned back in the seat and closed his eyes.
After Charles died, the Anderson family put out an official statement calling it a tragic accident. Said Charles had gone to the seaside alone that day and somehow fallen in. Body recovered later, badly damaged from the water, hard to identify right away.
They’d already buried him before Soren could get back to Nucus.
He’d never believed their story.
Charles had been blind, but he wasn’t careless. He knew the estate better than anyone. Whenever he went outside he always had someone with him. And he never liked going near the sea. Preferred places he knew well, where he could move around without help.
Charles hadn’t just fallen in.
Someone had tried to destroy the body after killing him.
No reliable witnesses. No clear evidence. And no good explanation for that final letter.
His thoughts broke when Lucus reached into the front and handed him a sleek white envelope.
“Sir, the Anderson matriarch’s sixtieth birthday celebration is tonight. Estate’s already full of guests. Almost every important member of the family has come back to Nucus.”
Soren’s expression didn’t change. “Is that so?”
“Yes, sir.”
Soren glanced toward Charles’s tomb one more time, then looked away. “Drive to the Anderson Estate.”
His eyes stayed cold as he stared ahead. “If Charles was murdered, the Andersons know more than they’ve told anyone. Tonight I want to know what they’re hiding.”

kill him for me!
Bang!Anderson's old woman hands slammed against the table.Several guests flinched, and the glasses on the table trembled from the impact. She slowly rose from her seat, her eyes fixed on Soren with an anger that made the entire hall feel colder.“You really have changed,”“When you were a child, you knew your place.”Her eyes traveled over Soren's military uniform.“You were nothing more than a boy brought into this family because your parents were dead. Chadwick gave you food, shelter, and the Anderson name when you had nowhere else to go.”Soren's expression did not change. The matriarch's voice became colder.“And now you return after ten years wearing a military uniform and believe that makes you important enough to stand in my house and threaten my family?”“You have forgotten something, Soren. This is not the battlefield, and I am not one of your soldiers. Inside this estate, your military rank means nothing. If I decide you leave this house in a body bag, nobody here will que
I want the truth
Creg, One of the Anderson siblings suddenly stepped forward, his face twisted with contempt.“I always knew you were nothing but a lowly bastard, Soren, but I never expected you to return after ten years and act as though you were someone important.”He glanced toward Luther before continuing.“And whatever happened to that useless blind man, Charles, has nothing to do with you anymore. He's dead. The family has already buried him, so why are you still digging into his death?”Soren's expression remained cold.Creg stepped closer, clearly emboldened by the support of the other Anderson family members.“Look around you. This family has already chosen its heir. Luther is the one who matters now. Charles was weak, useless, and incapable of doing anything for the Anderson family. You should have stayed away instead of coming back here and causing trouble.”Several Anderson siblings nodded in agreement.Cyrus sneered. “He's right. You were nothing more than an outsider whom Grandfather too
Anderson's Bastard
Martha stepped forward and blocked Soren’s path. “You’re not going anywhere,” she said coldly. “Leave the Anderson Estate immediately.”Soren stopped. Martha looked at him without the slightest warmth. “Charles is dead. Whatever reason brought you here, you should stop digging into the past. He is already gone.”Soren’s eyes turned cold. “Shut up.”Martha froze. Soren slowly looked at her. “You don’t deserve to say his name.” His voice was quiet, but the anger behind it made the surrounding guests fall silent. “You were Charles’s personal maid. You were supposed to stay beside him and protect him.” He took a step forward. “But you failed.”Martha’s face changed. “My brother was blind. He trusted the people around him because he had no choice.” Soren’s gaze became colder. “And now he’s dead.” He stared directly into Martha’s eyes. “So don’t stand in front of me and speak his name as if you have the right.”Martha’s lips trembled slightly, but she quickly regained her composure. “You ha
Anderson's Estate
The ride to the Anderson Estate was quiet. The roads gradually changed from crowded city streets to a private district surrounded by carefully trimmed green hedges and tall stone walls. Marble statues stood along both sides of the road, while expensive lights illuminated the entrance to the properties. At the end of the road stood a pair of enormous gilded iron gates.Soren stared at them through the window. He remembered those gates.Ten years ago, he had left this place carrying a military bag on his back while Charles stood behind him, desperately trying to follow the vehicle. Now he was finally back. But Charles was no longer waiting for him behind those gates. The Jeep slowly passed through the entrance and continued toward the main courtyard. The Anderson Estate appeared ahead, larger than Soren remembered. The mansion stood in the center of the enormous property, looking more like a royal palace than a private residence. It was one of the four great family houses in Westland an

War
Three years after Chadwick died, war broke out on Westland’s western border.A neighboring country pushed thousands of soldiers across and hit several military positions at once. Westland fought back right away, but the fighting dragged on for months. They started losing men faster than they could replace them. Bases got overwhelmed. Reserves kept getting called up. Eventually the government announced a full emergency mobilization. When Soren turned eighteen, the order came down: every able-bodied citizen of age had to report. Every household had to send someone. The Anderson family was no exception.Everyone knew the eldest son was supposed to go.But the matriarch had other ideas. At a family meeting she looked straight at Soren.“The country needs soldiers. This family has more than one young man who can serve. You’re already an outsider living under this roof. You should be the one to go.”Soren’s eyes narrowed a little. “The order says the eldest eligible member reports first.”“
