Chapter 1: The divorce

Dimitri smiled at the old man as he took the red necklace box from his hand.

"Thank you" He said to the old man with a smile on his face.

Today was his third year marriage anniversary and also his wife's birthday, so he thought of giving her a gift. They've been married for three years and he had never given her a gift so this time around he had saved up and deprived himself of so many things just to get her this gift.

He was working as a delivery man for a small company and his pay wasn't enough to even get him lunch, not to talk of buying a gift for his wife so he had to take on extra shifts as well as do other mini jobs just to give him enough money to buy his wife a gift.

He looked at the red necklace box on his hand and smiled deeply, though it only cost one hundred and fifty dollars but to him it was worth more than a billion dollars.

He wished he had gotten something more expensive for her, but this was what he could afford.

"Who ever you're getting this for must be really special to you" The old man said, smiling at him as he watched Dimitri act like a child who was gifted a bowl of chocolate

"Yes, she is very special to me, she is my wife and today is our third year marriage anniversary and also her birthday, I hope to give her this gift to appreciate her for being the best thing that ever happened to me" Dimitri said and tears gathered in his eyes.

His life never made sense until he met Lyda, though, it all started out as a contract marriage but with time he grew to love her and he knew she felt the same way for him.

"Congratulations, I hope you have a nice time with your wife" The old man said and walked away.

Dimitri entered his bike and drove off with his whole thoughts centred on how he was going to present the necklace to his wife. He hoped she liked it. He had made sure the necklace came with a red box because he knew his wife loved the colour red.

He drove his bike into the house as he sighted a blue suv packed in the garage. That wasn't his wife's car but he didn't put much thought to it.

As he drew closer to the door of the living room he held loud voices shouting in excitement which increased his anticipation to give his wife the gift he got her. He finally got to the door as he opened it slowly.

He saw Lyda and her best friend dancing in excitement as they didn't notice him, he watched his wife dance joyfully as he admired her

"Happy birthday darling" He finally said, drawing Lyda's attention as well as July, her best friend.

The smile on his wife's face disappeared as she saw him, it was as if he was a plague to her, he expected her to jump on him judging from how excited she looked earlier. But the smile on her face, the joy on her face was replaced with a deep frown.

"I see you're back, I have something for you" She said plainly

He moved closer to her uncomfortably, trying to overlook her demeanour. It might be that she was so stressed after dancing and that might have affected her.

"I also have something to show you, but you go first" He said enthusiastically.

Though he could see that something was visibly wrong but he didn't want to put much thought into it, he knew if he showed her what he got for her, she would brighten up.

Lyda walked to the sofa as she peaked up her pink louis vuitton bag and brought out a brown envelope from it, she threw the envelope rashly at the table causing Dimitri to wonder. He had never seen her like this and that made him uneasy.

This wasn't the first time she was showing him an envelope but she always brought it to him when she close a deal with an investor or won a contract for her company but here she is throwing an envelope at him with no sign of excitement on her face and this caused him to worry and probably prepare for the worst which he was not expecting

"I see you got a contract again" He said innocently and opened the envelope with a smile but the moment his eyes scanned through the headline of the letter, the smile on his face was replaced with a surprised reaction. It wasn't a letter to show that she won a contract, it was a divorce letter.

"W……why a ... .are you g…g…giving me a divorce letter? I thought you loved me? Have I done anything wrong?" Dimitri said, stammering.

Lyda laughed at his reaction making him even more surprised "For a second you almost made me feel bad, wait, did you really think I would fall in love with a man like you? A cheap pauper who can't even afford a gift for his wife" Lyda blurted out in disgust

"Is that the way you see me Lyda? As a pauper? How can you think so lowly of me?" Dimitri said as his heart ached in pain.

"Tell me Dimitri, how should I think of you? I'm a woman of influence and value, I own a multi million company and as at yesterday, I'm the most searched after designer here in Anatolia, my life is so perfect but my only imperfection is you, my marriage to you is a stain on my name, you're a plague to my life and I want you out of it!" Lyda fired in anger

"You should take it easy Lyda, he is still your husband until he signs those papers" July said as she looked at Dimitri in pity.

He looked at his wife and all he could see was hatred, all he could see was anger, all he could see was disgust plainly written on her eyes. He had always loved her right from the beginning and he thought she felt the same way but it was clear that the sight of him disgusts her.

"I'm trying to be the best husband to you Lyda, I even got you a birthday present" He said, bringing out the red box from his pocket thinking it would have a way of calming her down but he was mistaken.

She grabbed the box from his hand and opened it revealing a beautiful necklace, she smashed the box on the floor and used her leg to destroy it

"So I'm worth just this necklace to you? You expect me to marry a man who can't even afford an expensive gift for his wife? Tell me Dimitri, is this necklace up to a thousand dollars? Is it even up to two hundred dollars? Listen, I'm not a pauper like you, I'm not poor like you, we entered into this marriage strictly on a contract and I promised to pay you two million dollars if you could stay with me till my father is convinced enough to give me his company and you were able to pull that off" She said walking closer to him

"Now the contract is officially off. Due to the amount of years you've wasted with me, I would increase your pay to five million dollars, I would also give you this house alongside, because it is clear enough that you have no place to go if I throw you out" She said, smashing the necklace on his face

"So the years we spent together was nothing to you? You see me as a nobody, as a pauper, I'm your husband, Lyda, but you've never taking me that way," Dimitri fired in anger

"You're nobody Dimitri, you're not on my level. I'm sure you saw the brand new suv packed in the garage? That is a gift from someone more capable than you, you should consider going with someone that is of your level. I hate you Dimitri! Sign those papers and get out of my life forever" She said nonchalantly

"I would sign the papers but keep your money and house to yourself, they're worthless to me, but one thing is sure, I would make you regret what you did to me this very night, I would make you pay greatly" Dimitri said as he signed the papers and used the pen to stab his hands making Lyda cringe a bit

He placed his hand on the papers causing his blood to stain the papers "I would come for you Lyda, and this time around not as a pauper like you see me as, but as a man you don't want to mess with" He said with bloodshot eyes as his eyes displayed nothing but anger.

Though Lyda was a little bit scared at what he did, she immediately recovered and walked to him angrily, she slapped him hard on the face causing him to look at her in shock

"I'm not the wicked one here, I was good enough to increase your pay to five million dollars and even gave you my house and you still had the guts to insult me you ungrateful asshole, get out of my house! And don't ever step your foot in it again" She said with a voice of finality

He looked at her for a while and the love and tenderness he felt for her disappeared all he felt for her now was hatred and disgust and he wasn't going to stop till he makes her regret looking down on him

He picked up one of the divorce papers and walked away.
