Chapter 1
The fluorescent lights of the university library had spent the last six hours slowly baking Ryan Carter’s brain into a dry, useless husk. It was precisely 2:14 AM. As he trudged down the cracked concrete sidewalk, the biting autumn wind did absolutely nothing to revive him. Instead, it just made his ears freeze and reminded him of his profound, soul-crushing poverty.
Pulling out his phone, he tapped on his banking app with a thumb that felt like a frozen sausage. The screen illuminated his sleep-deprived face, casting a pathetic, pale glow over his dark circles.
Account Balance: $2.34.
Ryan let out a long, shuddering sigh that materialized in the frigid air as a sad puff of condensation. "Great," he muttered to himself, shoving his hands deep into the pockets of his threadbare hoodie. "Two dollars and thirty-four cents. I can’t even afford the cheap instant ramen. I’m going to have to resort to eating the decorative pinecones outside the biology building."
Determined to cut his misery short, Ryan decided to take the forbidden path—the narrow, perpetually damp alleyway that cut directly behind the local seafood diner and connected to the sophomore dorm complex. It was a place usually reserved for sketchy drug deals, feral raccoons, and the occasional adventurous rat. Tonight, however, it smelled unusually strange. It didn’t just smell like rotting fish head soup; there was a bizarre, artificial undercurrent of... strawberry bubblegum?
He paused at the mouth of the alley, his eyebrows knitting together.
Squelch. Thud. Squelch.
The sounds were wet, heavy, and rhythmic. It sounded like someone was throwing a massive, waterlogged sleeping bag against a brick wall. Curiosity, mixed with the reckless apathy of a student who had just failed a practice exam on advanced thermodynamics, pushed Ryan forward. He crept along the shadows of the brick wall, his sneakers treading silently over damp cardboard.
He peeked around the corner of a rusted grease trap and froze. His tired brain immediately assumed he had finally slipped into a sleep-deprivation-induced psychosis.
Standing in the center of the alley was a girl. She wore a dark, oversized trench coat, scuffed combat boots, and had her messy dark hair held up by a claw clip that was currently hanging on for dear life. In her hand, she held what looked remarkably like a glittering, star-topped plastic wand from a discount toy store.
But she wasn't playing pretend.
Opposite her was a towering, undulating nightmare. It was a literal, animate monster composed entirely of compacted garbage. It stood a solid seven feet tall. Its torso was a grotesque mosaic of crushed aluminum cans and rotting cabbage leaves, its limbs were thick ropes of tangled plastic wrap and discarded ethernet cables, and its face was a hollowed-out plastic milk jug with two glowing, mold-green eyes.
"Back, foul construct of the neglected waste management system!" the girl yelled. Her voice was high-pitched, incredibly tense, and cracked slightly on the word 'construct.'
The trash monster responded by letting out a wet, burping roar that sprayed a fine mist of expired chocolate milk into the air. It swung a massive fist made of wet newspapers at her.
The girl leaped backward with surprising agility, though she tripped slightly over a discarded wooden pallet. She recovered, raised her glittering wand, and pointed it dramatically at the beast. "By the power of the Astral Hearth, taste the—wait, no, what was the incantation again? Uh... Scintilla Roseus!"
A blinding spark of hot pink light erupted from the tip of her wand. The magical bolt shot through the air, screaming with the sound of a whistling firework.
It missed the trash monster by a wide yard.
Instead, the spell struck a pile of discarded cardboard boxes stacked against the brick wall. There was a loud pop, a shower of sparkling pink glitter, and a heavy scent of synthetic strawberries. When the smoke cleared, the cardboard boxes had been transformed into a pile of perfectly harmless, fluffy pink teddy bears.
The trash monster paused, looking at the teddy bears, then back at the girl, its milk-jug head tilting in what looked like utter confusion.
"Dammit!" the girl hissed, shaking the wand violently as if it were a clogged ketchup bottle. "The targeting alignment is totally busted! Come on, you stupid piece of plastic, calibrate!"
Watching this absurd spectacle, the sheer, ridiculous contrast between the horrific garbage monster and the girl's sparkly, failed magical-girl routine breached Ryan’s mental defenses. He tried to hold it in, but the absurdity was simply too immense.
A loud, violent snort escaped his nose, followed immediately by a sharp, echoing laugh.
"Pfft—ha! Oh my god," Ryan wheezed, clapping a hand over his mouth.
The silence that followed was deafening.
The girl’s head snapped toward his corner so fast Ryan heard her neck pop. Her eyes, wide and frantic, locked directly onto him. "What the... you can see this?!" she shrieked, her voice cracking completely this time.
"Uh," Ryan stammered, his laughter dying instantly as the gravity of his situation reasserted itself. "I mean... unless that’s a really, really realistic two-man cosplay of a garbage bag, yeah. I can see it."
"No way! You're a mundane! You’re supposed to have a cognitive filter!" she yelled, waving her wand at him in exasperation. "Go away! Run! You're ruining my focus!"
Unfortunately, the verbal exchange had also drawn the attention of the trash monster. The beast slowly rotated its milk-jug head toward Ryan. Its glowing green eyes flared with sudden, aggressive light. It decided that the fragile, laughing human in the hoodie was a much easier target than the girl with the laser-pointer wand.
With a wet, terrifying screech, the monster lunged.
"Oh, crap!" Ryan yelled.
The sheer speed of the creature was terrifying. It didn't lumber; it rolled forward like a localized avalanche of domestic waste. The stench of rotten eggs and rancid grease hit Ryan a split second before the monster did.
Adrenaline, pure and electric, surged through Ryan's veins. His survival instincts, honed by years of dodging aggressive geese on campus, took complete control. He didn't try to run backward—he would have tripped. Instead, he threw himself to the side, executing a frantic, desperate dive-roll over the hood of a greasy green dumpster.
BOOM!
The trash monster slammed violently into the brick wall exactly where Ryan had been standing. The impact was so hard that bricks cracked, and a shower of old coffee grounds, crumpled flyers, and plastic bottle caps exploded outward like shrapnel.
Ryan tumbled over the dumpster, landing hard on his shoulder in a pile of wet leaves. He groaned, scrambling to his feet, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Hey! Magic girl! A little help here?!"
"I'm trying!" Evelyn yelled, sprinting forward. She raised her wand again, her boots splashing through puddles. "Scintilla Roseus! Scintilla— oh, come on, spark, you stupid stick!"
The wand emitted a pathetic, wet fizz and a few sad, pink bubbles.
The trash monster shook its head, turning its green-eyed gaze back onto Ryan, who was now backed into a literal corner between the dumpster and the diner's back door. The beast raised a massive, heavy club of a hand, composed of a rusted car muffler wrapped in thick garbage bags. It swung it downward with crushing force.
"Not today!" Ryan scrambled backward, sliding low beneath the swing. The muffler missed his skull by mere inches, smashing into the metal dumpster with a deafening CLANG that left Ryan's ears ringing.
Using the momentum of his slide, Ryan grabbed a heavy, discarded plastic crate and hurled it straight at the monster’s face. The crate struck the milk jug, cracking the plastic and spilling out a foul, dark sludge. The monster roared in anger, momentarily blinded by its own leaking contents.
"Now! Shoot it now!" Ryan screamed, scrambling away from the flailing creature.
"Out of the way!" Evelyn yelled. She took a running leap, tripped spectacularly over a discarded banana peel, but somehow used the fall to slide on her knees, aiming her wand directly at the monster’s chest. "Eat glitter, you overgrown landfill! SCINTILLA GRANDIS!"
This time, the wand didn't fizzle.
A massive, roaring beam of brilliant, hot pink energy erupted from the star tip, illuminating the entire alley in a neon-pink glow. The spell hit the trash monster dead center.
The beast didn't explode. Instead, the magical energy rapidly enveloped it, reacting with the organic waste. In a fraction of a second, the towering monster of garbage was violently converted. There was a sound like a million party poppers going off at once.
POOF.
A massive cloud of pink smoke and glittering confetti filled the alley. When it cleared, the terrifying monster was gone. In its place was a harmless, static pile of hundreds of tiny, strawberry-scented air fresheners shaped like little pine trees, scattered across the wet asphalt.
Ryan sat on the ground, leaning against the damp brick wall, chest heaving. He was covered in a fine layer of pink glitter, a stray piece of lettuce was stuck to his left shoe, and he smelled faintly of artificial berries and existential dread.
"What... the actual... hell," Ryan panted, staring at the pile of air fresheners.
He heard the scuff of leather boots. Evelyn was standing over him. She was panting just as hard, her face flushed, her hair completely ruined. Slowly, she raised her glittering, star-topped wand and pointed it directly between Ryan’s eyes. The star tip pulsed with a faint, threatening pink light.
She glared down at him, her eyes burning with a mix of shock, embarrassment, and intense suspicion.
"Okay, spill," Evelyn demanded, her voice shaking slightly. "Who the hell are you, and what kind of freak can see high-grade astral cleansing magic?"

The Hidden Mage of New York Chapter 6
"We’re going through!" The words were instantly torn from Ryan’s lips by the howling, rain-slicked wind, lost in the roar of the downpour. The towering wall of violet force loomed larger by the millisecond. Up close, it wasn't just a flat surface; it was a humming, vibrating sheet of raw, static electricity that made the hairs on Ryan’s arms stand on end. The asphalt beneath the scooter’s wheels seemed to warp, and the falling rain vaporized into tiny, hissing puffs of steam before it could even touch the crackling purple barrier."Are you insane?!" Evelyn shrieked directly into his ear. She squeezed him tighter, her arms locking around his ribs with a desperation that threatened to crack his sternum.Ryan didn't back down. He couldn't. The physical pressure of her body was a hot, solid weight against his back. Her chest was flattened hard against his shoulder blades, her rapid, terrified heartbeat vibrating straight through his spine in a frantic, syncopated rhythm. Even in the middl

The Hidden Mage of New York Chapter 5
The ruby eyes of the brass bird went dark, and the holographic projection dissolved into a shower of dead red sparks that singed the polished wood of Ryan’s desk."The Vanguard," Evelyn whispered. The color had completely drained from her face. She looked down at herself, swimming in Ryan’s oversized grey hoodie, and then scrambled frantically to grab her damp combat boots. "We have to go. Right now. If the Vanguard is here, they’ve already locked down the block. They don't capture, Ryan. They sanitize.""Sanitize?" Ryan’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He yanked on his sneakers, his hands shaking so violently he could barely tie the laces. "As in, kill everything?""As in, they will turn this entire building into a localized gas leak accident," Evelyn said, shoving her feet into her boots without even tying the laces. She grabbed her chipped, glittery wand from the desk, her knuckles white. Before she could step toward the door, Ryan caught her arm. The physical

The Hidden Mage of New York Chapter 4
The heavy fire door of the sophomore dorm complex clicked shut, cutting off the relentless, freezing downpour of the autumn night. Ryan and Evelyn stood in the dimly lit, carpeted hallway of the third floor, breathing in sync like two exhausted runners at the end of a marathon. They were completely soaked. Water dripped from the hem of Ryan’s threadbare hoodie, pooling onto the industrial carpet, and they both smelled like a highly questionable combination of fresh rain, burnt electronics, and sour, exploded milk."Hurry," Ryan whispered, his voice hoarse as he fumbled with his plastic key card. His fingers, still trembling from the residual adrenaline of the convenience store explosion, slipped twice before the lock finally beeped green. He pushed the door open and ushered Evelyn inside, quickly locking it behind them and throwing the deadbolt."Is your roommate here?" Evelyn whispered, her teeth chattering so hard they made a clicking sound in the dark."No," Ryan breathed, leaning

The mass of shadow did not just fall; it descended with the sickening, weightless speed of a hunting spider.Ryan’s survival instincts, screaming at a volume that completely drowned out his exhaustion, took absolute control. Before his brain could even process the movement, his hand shot out and grabbed Evelyn’s wrist. The skin-to-skin contact was electric, sending a sharp, grounding shock through his arm. With a desperate grunt, he yanked her backward into his chest.Splat.The liquid shadow struck the floor exactly where Evelyn’s boots had been a millisecond prior. The concrete hissed violently, a foul, black sludge instantly eating a deep, steaming crater into the stone floor. The air filled with the toxic stench of burning plastic and ozone."Run!" Ryan barked, his voice raw.He didn't wait for her to reply. He kept his grip tight on her wrist, dragging her along as they tore through the narrow, twisting aisles of the library basement. Behind them, the shadow mass let out another
