Kael found Mira in the old hunter's cabin.
It was hidden in a hollow three miles from the Rusted Stag. She had been using it as a safe house. A place to disappear when the pack got too close.
She was sitting at a wooden table. A candle flickered between them. Her hands were folded. Her face was calm.
"You found something," she said.
Kael tossed the journal onto the table. "Hale. Commander Hale. He's the traitor."
Mira picked up the journal. She flipped through it. Her eyes moved quickly. Her face did not change.
"This is good," she said. "Very good."
"You knew."
Mira looked up. "I suspected. I didn't have proof."
"You had proof. You just didn't share it."
"I had pieces. This journal is the whole picture."
Kael stared at her. She was calm. Controlled. But there was something else in her eyes. Something he had not seen before.
Relief.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Kael asked. "Why did you let me walk into Vane's compound blind?"
Mira set the journal down. She met his eyes. "Because I needed to be sure. And because I needed you to find this on your own."
"Explain."
"Vane is a middleman. Hale is the contact. But someone else is running the operation. Someone above them both."
Kael's blood went cold. "Who?"
"I don't know. But I know they're in the pack. Someone with authority. Someone who can cover Hale's tracks."
Kael thought about it. The Alpha. Voss. Theron. Commander Hale was the training master. He had access to the pack's young wolves. He could influence them. Recruit them.
But someone had to be above him. Someone who could give him orders.
"The Alpha?" Kael asked.
Mira shook her head. "The Alpha is weak. He's not smart enough to run an operation like this. Someone else. Someone who's been planning this for years."
Kael sat down. His arm throbbed. The temporary cure was fading. He had maybe four days left.
"We need to go to the Council," he said. "Show them the journal. Expose Hale."
"No."
Kael stared at her. "What do you mean, no?"
"Think about it. The Council is compromised. If we go to them with this, Hale will find out. He'll destroy the evidence. He'll kill us both."
"Then what?"
Mira leaned forward. "We find the handler. We find the person above Hale. We expose them both at the same time."
Kael shook his head. "We don't have time. The silver is killing me. I have four days, maybe five."
Mira reached into her coat. She pulled out another vial. Clear liquid. Identical to the first.
"This will buy you another week. I have more. Enough to keep you alive until we finish this."
Kael took the vial. He uncorked it. He drank.
The bitterness was familiar. The warmth spread through his chest. The fever receded.
"A week," he said. "That's all I get."
"Then we need to move fast."
Kael set the empty vial on the table. He looked at the journal. At Mira. At the candle flickering between them.
"We need to get inside the pack," he said. "We need access to the Alpha's records. The council meetings. The communications."
Mira nodded. "That means getting back into the compound."
"I'm a fugitive. They'll kill me on sight."
"They won't if you bring them something valuable."
Kael understood. "A trade. I give them Hale. They give me a chance to prove my innocence."
"Exactly."
Kael looked at his arm. The wound was ugly. The silver was still there, waiting. He had a week. Maybe less.
"How do I get in?" he asked.
Mira reached into her pocket. She pulled out a small piece of paper. A note. Handwritten.
"This is from Sera. She's been helping me. She says there's a way in through the old supply tunnel. It's been sealed for years, but she knows how to open it."
Kael took the note. He read it. Sera's handwriting. Neat. Precise.
"Sera is working with you?"
"She's been working with me for months. She's the one who told me about the conspiracy. She's the one who helped me gather evidence."
Kael thought about Sera. The quiet intelligence runner. The one who had followed Mira to the Rusted Stag. The one who had given him the map.
She was Mira's agent. She had been Mira's agent all along.
And she had let Kael believe she was just a desperate omega trying to prove herself.
"She used me," Kael said.
"Everyone uses everyone. The question is whether you can use her back."
Kael looked at the note. The supply tunnel. The way back inside.
"I need to see Sera," he said. "I need to talk to her."
"She's waiting at the tunnel entrance. She'll take you in."
Kael stood. He folded the note and put it in his pocket.
"This doesn't mean I trust you," he said.
Mira smiled. "I don't need you to trust me. I need you to be useful."
Kael walked to the door. He stopped with his hand on the frame.
"When this is over," he said, "when we find the handler, I'm coming for you."
Mira's smile did not fade. "I know."
Kael walked out into the night. The moon was high. The air was cold.
He had a week. A way back inside. And a target.
Commander Hale.
And above him, someone else. Someone hiding in the shadows.
The handler.
**You're heading back into pack territory with a week to live. Sera is waiting. Hale is the traitor. But someone above him is pulling the strings. Do you expose Hale immediately, or do you wait and try to find the handler first?**

He carried a message pouch strapped to his chest."Alpha," the courier said, bowing. "I bring word from the Storm Howl pack."Kael took the pouch. He opened it. Inside was a letter sealed with the Storm Howl's mark.He broke the seal and read. The message was brief. Dire. The Storm Howl had detected movement in the northern territories. A large force. Human. Armed. They were moving south.Kael's blood went cold. He looked up at the courier. "When?""Three days ago. They're moving fast. They'll be at the border by tomorrow night."Kael folded the letter. He turned to Theron. "Call a council meeting. Now."---The council room was packed within the hour.Wolves from every part of the pack gathered. Elders. Warriors. Runners. Their faces were grim. The Fires of Recovery

Three days of rebuilding what had been destroyed.Kael walked through the courtyard. The walls were scarred with bullet holes. The gates were splintered. The buildings were damaged. But the pack was alive. They were recovering. He found Theron at the training yard. His friend was drilling the young wolves. Their movements were sharp. Precise. They were learning from the battle. They were getting stronger."Kael," Theron said. "You should be resting.""I've rested enough."Theron dismissed the young wolves. He walked over to Kael. His face was tired but focused."The other packs have responded to our messages," he said. "They're grateful for the warning. They want to form an alliance."Kael nodded. "Good. We need allies. The valley is dangerous. There will be other threats.""I'll arrange a meeting. The Alphas of the surviving packs. We ca

The Church of Bones
Kael pressed his back against the cold stone wall. The church was dark. Dust motes floated in the slivers of light that pierced the stained glass windows. The air smelled of rot and old wood. His pack was scattered throughout the nave. Some were wounded. Some were dead. The rest were waiting.Outside, the enemy was moving. He could hear them. Footsteps. Shouts. The clink of weapons. They were surrounding the building. They were going to burn them out."We can't stay here," Theron said. He was crouched beside Kael. His face was streaked with blood. "They'll set the place on fire."Kael nodded. He looked around the church. At the windows. At the doors. At the altar at the far end."Everyone," he said. "Listen to me."The pack turned. They looked at him. Their eyes were desperate."We're going to break out. But we're not going out the front. We're going out the back.""There is no back," a young wolf said. "There's just the wall."Kael looked at the wall behind the altar. It was old ston
The Return of Shadows
The knife was in Kael's hand before he realized he had drawn it.The blade pressed against Mira's throat. She did not flinch. Her eyes were steady. Her hands were at her sides. She had not come armed."You have two seconds," Kael said. "Start talking.""The real handler is Damien Cross."Kael's blood went cold. "Cross? Theron's uncle?""The same. He's been running the Consortium's operation from the beginning. Hale was just his lieutenant. When Hale died, Damien took over directly."Kael stared at her. The knife was still at her throat. "Why would Cross want to destroy the packs?""Because he believes the packs are weak. He wants to rebuild them in his image. Stronger. More ruthless. The Consortium is just his tool."Kael lowered the knife. He stepped back. His mind was racing. Damien Cross. The brother of Theron's father. The man who had been exiled years ago for challenging the Alpha. He had never met Damien. But he had heard the stories. A brilliant strategist. A ruthless fighter.

Dawn broke over the compound. Kael stood at the window of the Alpha's quarters. The room was still foreign to him. The desk. The maps. The weight of authority. He had been Alpha for three days. Three days of meetings. Three days of decisions. Three days of wolves looking to him for answers. He still did not feel like a leader.Theron entered without knocking. His face was grim. "The patrols are back. They found something."Kael turned. "What?""Bodies. Three wolves. From the Shadow Fang pack. Their throats were cut."Kael's blood went cold. "Shadow Fang? They're on the other side of the valley.""They were moving toward us. Running. Someone was chasing them."Kael moved to the desk. He spread the map. The valley was marked with territories. The Broken Claw was at the center. The other four packs surrounded them."Shadow Fang is the closest," Kael said. "If someone is attacking them, we're next."Theron nodded. "That's what I thought."Kael looked at the map. At the borders. At the emp
