Sila didn't waste time with a formal salute. He moved like a striking viper, his rapier a silver blur.

"Too slow, Arto!" Sila sneered, his blade whistling inches from Arto’s cheek.

Arto scrambled backward, his boots sliding on the grit-covered stone. "Lara, he’s faster than he looks!"

"Obviously! He’s a peacock with a needle, not a statue! Pivot your right foot or he’s going to turn your ribs into a kebab!"

"I’m trying to keep my balance!" Arto yelled, barely parrying a stinging thrust that vibrated through his rusted broadsword.

"Balance is for yoga classes, Arto! Fight dirty! He’s expecting a gentleman’s duel. Give him a street brawl."

Sila laughed, a sharp, patronizing sound. "Is that all? I expected a frantic death dance, but this is just pathetic. You’re not even swinging anymore, you’re just waving iron at me."

"Maybe I’m just pacing myself, Sila," Arto retorted, his lungs burning as he deflected another strike.

"You’re exhausting yourself. It’s like watching a fish flop on a dock."

"Focus, Arto!" Lara’s voice shrieked in his mind. "He’s winding up for a high-line thrust. The vanity strike. He’s telegraphing it with his left hip. Do you see it?"

"I see it! What do I do?"

"Don't block it. Slide under it. If you block, that rusted piece of junk will shatter."

Arto dropped low, his knees groaning. The rapier hummed over his head, slicing a lock of his hair.

"Close! Too close!" Lara shouted. "Now, kick the loose stone toward his shins! Distract him!"

"That’s a move for a playground, not a duel!"

"Do you want to survive or do you want a gold star for decorum? Kick it!"

Arto lunged forward, not with his sword, but with his boot, slamming his heel into a jagged piece of masonry. It skittered across the floor, catching Sila mid-step.

"What in the—" Sila stumbled, his practiced rhythm breaking.

"Now! Hook his ankle with your pommel!"

Arto didn't hesitate. He swung the hilt of his broadsword, catching Sila behind the knee. It wasn't elegant. It was clumsy and violent, and it sent the noble sprawling onto the dusty floor with a grunt of shock.

"A cheap trick!" Sila snarled, scrambling to find his footing, his face flushing with crimson rage. "You absolute peasant!"

"I’m a project manager, Sila. We specialize in low-cost, high-impact results," Arto panted, pointing his blade unsteadily at the man’s throat.

"I’ll have your head for that. That wasn't a move; that was an insult to the art of the blade!"

"The art of the blade didn't save you from the floor, did it?" Arto said, his hand shaking but his gaze hardening.

"Arto, finish it," Lara hissed. "He’s reaching for a backup dagger in his boot. If he stands up, you’re dead."

"I don't know how to finish it! I can't kill a man!"

"You aren't killing him! You're disarming him! Jam the blade into his sword arm. Just enough to make him drop the steel."

Sila lunged upward, his eyes wild. "Die in the dirt where you belong!"

Arto didn't think. He stepped into the momentum, forcing his broadsword down in a heavy, downward arc. It didn't strike with finesse; it struck with the weight of a falling anvil. There was a sickening clack of metal on metal, and Sila’s rapier flew from his grip, clattering into the darkness of the hallway.

Sila froze, his chest heaving, his eyes wide with disbelief. Arto stood over him, the tip of his rusted blade hovering inches from Sila’s neck.

"It’s over, Sila," Arto breathed, sweat stinging his eyes. "Get out."

Sila stared at the blade, then up at Arto. The sneer was gone, replaced by a cold, jagged hatred that promised far more than a simple duel.

"You think this is a victory?" Sila whispered, his voice trembling with a different kind of intensity. "You’ve just signed your own death warrant. The Valerius name was already a laughingstock, but now? You’ve made it a target."

"At least I’m still standing in my own house," Arto replied, though his legs felt like jelly.

"For now," Sila spat, rising slowly. He didn't bother picking up his blade. He backed away, his eyes never leaving Arto’s face. "The capital doesn't forget a humiliation, Arto. And neither do I. You’ve drawn blood—or at least, you’ve broken the rules. Don't think you can hide behind your walls forever. I’ll be back. And next time, there won't be any room for tricks."

"Is that a threat?" Arto asked, keeping his point steady until Sila turned.

"It’s a promise," Sila hissed, turning on his heel and stalking toward the door. "Enjoy your little ruin while you can. It’s going to be your tomb soon enough."

As the iron door slammed shut, echoing like a thunderclap through the hall, Arto’s knees finally gave out. He collapsed against the pillar, the sword clattering onto the floorboards.

"You’re alive," Lara noted, her voice strangely quiet. "And you didn't even throw up on your shoes. I’m almost impressed."

"He said he’d be back," Arto muttered, staring at the empty doorway. "He’s going to tell everyone, isn't he?"

"Oh, definitely. By sunrise, you’ll be the talk of the capital. A disgrace who fights like a street urchin."

"And that’s supposed to be good?"

"Arto," Lara laughed, a dark, dangerous sound. "In a city of vultures, being a dangerous, unpredictable mutt is the only way to keep them from eating you alive. You’ve stopped being a joke. You’ve just become a problem."

Arto looked down at his trembling hands. The rush of adrenaline was fading, replaced by a cold, sinking realization of what was coming next.

"What happens tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow?" Lara’s voice drifted, sounding suddenly miles away. "Tomorrow, the real fun begins. Because if I know Sila, he isn't coming back alone."

The forest floor was a cold, unforgiving bed of rot and slick leaves. Arto pulled Lara closer, her weight surprisingly substantial against his chest. Her breathing was shallow, a rhythmic hitch that sent a spike of pure, unadulterated terror through his gut."Lara? Hey, wake up. You can’t just go 'offline' when we’ve got a monster tracking us. Not cool."She didn't stir. Her skin, which had been glowing with ethereal radiance moments ago, now felt like normal, feverish human skin."Damn it, Lara. I’m a project manager, not a doctor. I don't have a contingency plan for a comatose goddess."The woods groaned. It wasn't the wind. A tree snapped three hundred yards away, the sound echoing like a dry bone breaking under a boot. It was heavy, methodical, and deliberate."Arto? Is... is that you?" Her eyes flickered open, hazy and unfocused. She tried to push herself up, her fingers digging into his soaking wet shirt."Stay down. You’re physically anchored now, which means you can actually b

The ballroom exploded into a symphony of shattering crystal and frantic shrieks. The massive chandelier groaned, its iron chain snapping with a sound like a gunshot, plummeting toward the center of the dance floor."Move, Arto! Now!" Lara’s voice wasn't just in his head; it was a psychic shove that sent him diving behind a silk-draped buffet table just as the chandelier struck the marble."I’m moving! I’m moving!" Arto scrambled on his hands and knees, sliding through spilled wine and crushed hors d'oeuvres."The north exit! The servants are panicked—use the confusion!""I’m not a professional thief, Lara! This doublet is making it impossible to breathe!""Take it off, you vain ape! We’re running for our lives, not auditioning for a play!"Arto ripped the buttons off his jacket, the fabric tearing with a satisfying pop. He tossed the expensive silk aside, revealing his sweat-soaked linen shirt. "There! Happy? Now where?""Left! Past the pastry cart! Do not stop for the éclairs!""I am

Vane’s rapier hummed, a thin, hungry sound that cut through the stale dungeon air. Arto held his breath, his sword tip weaving a lazy, defensive pattern."You’re going to kill me in a sewer, Vane? How very un-noble of you," Arto remarked, his voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in his blood."Efficiency isn’t a vice, Arto. It’s a hobby," Vane sneered, his monocle glinting. "And honestly, the rats will appreciate the feast more than the capital’s high court.""Lara, talk to me. Do we run or do we dance?" Arto whispered, his focus narrowing."We don't do either," Lara’s voice crackled, faint but sharp. "Look at his boots. He’s standing on a pressure plate. He’s not here to duel; he’s here to bury us both.""A suicide bomber? That’s his plan?" Arto felt a cold sweat break out."It’s a 'political necessity.' If he dies with you, the Valerius name is erased from the ledgers entirely. Very tidy."Vane chuckled, taking a step forward. "You’re quiet, Arto. Praying? Or just calculating

The white light collapsed into a pinprick, leaving Arto sprawled on the cold, damp stone of a forgotten storage alcove. He gasped, his lungs burning, his fingers still curled around empty air.But the air wasn’t empty.A hand—slender, pale, and shimmering like starlight filtered through deep water—rested firmly against his forearm. It felt like cool silk against his sweat-drenched skin."Arto? Are you alive, or did we just relocate to a very boring afterlife?"Arto scrambled backward, his heart hammering against his ribs. He blinked, staring at the translucent arm that transitioned from the solid grip on his sleeve into a hazy, shimmering vapor that coalesced into a figure. Lara was there, partially manifested, her glowing fingers tracing the bruised skin of his wrist."You’re… you’re actually here," Arto stammered, his voice cracking. "I mean, mostly here. Is this safe?"Lara tilted her head, her face a swirl of soft, luminescent light. She flexed her fingers, the movement graceful a

The stone fist hammered through the space where Arto’s head had been a heartbeat prior, pulverizing the wall behind him into a spray of grit and bone."Move, you moron! That thing isn't just strong; it’s a bulldozer!" Lara’s voice screamed, not in his mind, but vibrating in the air like a distorted radio frequency."I’m moving! I’m moving! Do you think I want to be a smear on the wall?" Arto lunged to the side, his boots sliding on the slick, blood-crusted flagstones."It’s not just a Golem, Arto! It’s an Iron-Heart Sentinel. It feeds on movement. Stop twitching and start thinking!""Easy for you to say! You aren't the one being hunted by a literal pile of scrap metal!" He barely ducked under a sweeping iron limb, the gust of displaced air buffeting his hair."If you don't find a rhythm, we’re both going to be recycled into rubble. Look at the sword in its chest. That’s its anchor.""You want me to stab a giant while it’s trying to crush me like an empty soda can? That’s your plan?" A

  • Chapter 5: The Quest for Power

The iron door didn’t just buckle; it surrendered, showering the hallway in splintered wood and rusted iron shrapnel. Three men in blackened plate armor surged inside, their silhouettes jagged against the dying evening light."Sila has a flair for the dramatic, doesn't he?" Lara’s voice was a frantic hiss inside Arto's skull. "Run, you idiot! We are not equipped for a three-on-one!""Run where? The back wall is collapsed!" Arto scrambled backward, tripping over his own heels as he scrambled toward the library entrance."The cellar. The old servant’s passage. Move!"Arto didn't think. He dove into the shadows of the library just as a heavy mace smashed the pillar where his head had been a second before. He scrambled down the spiraling stone stairs of the hidden passage, his breath hitching in his chest."They’re behind us, Lara! Do you have any ‘divine’ tricks to stop them?""I’m a tethered soul, Arto, not a tactical nuke. My energy is spent. You need levels. We need that dungeon.""You
