"Mr. Richard, the retrieval team is already on its way."

Richard gave a slow nod.

"Thank you."

The officer did not leave immediately. His eyes swept across the surrounding streets, making sure the area was completely secure before turning back to Richard.

He lowered his voice. "Is the item still intact?"

Richard understood what he meant and simply gave a short nod.

The officer let out a relieved breath.

"That's good."

Several seconds passed in silence. Then the officer spoke again, this time in

  • 138. Childhood Friend

Once everything was reasonably organized, Ken picked up his backpack and carried it to his room. He placed it beside the wardrobe, then looked around the room for a moment before letting out a soft breath. The room was still simple, with an old study desk in the corner and a bed that hadn’t yet been fitted with fresh sheets. There was nothing luxurious about it, but that was precisely what made it feel familiar. After living in the city for so long and facing all sorts of events he could never have imagined before, being here made Ken feel as though part of him had returned to the past.Unfortunately, he didn’t have much time to reminisce. He still needed to visit Uncle Abrams and thank him in a more appropriate way. He had already prepared a special bag containing several gifts for the man.Ken left his room and found Kienna carrying her clothes and skincare set toward her own bedroom.“Hey, don’t forget to put fresh sheets on my bed,” he said.Kienna turned to him with an expression

  • 137. “I wasn’t complimenting you!”

Uncle Abrams’s car finally stopped in front of a modest house at the end of the street. Ken opened the door and stepped out, then helped Kienna take their belongings from the back seat while Abrams remained behind the wheel, waiting for them to finish.“Thank you so much, Uncle. Sorry for troubling you today,” Ken said after making sure they had gathered all their belongings.Abrams waved casually. “Enough. Stop thanking me all the time. Drop by my house when you have time. We can have some tea and chat.”“Of course, Uncle.”Kienna nodded along with a broad smile.“Thank you, Uncle Abrams!”After saying their goodbyes once more, the siblings carried their belongings into the house. Abrams waited until the door closed before driving away, leaving Ken and Kienna in front of the house that had been their family home for years. As soon as he stepped inside, Ken paused for a moment. Not much had changed. The living room still had the old sofa with its slightly faded color, the wooden table

  • 136. Not Be Crossed

They finally arrived at the hospital parking lot. Near a car parked beneath the shade of several trees, a middle-aged man stood checking his phone. As soon as he saw Ken and Kienna approaching, he slipped his phone into his pocket and greeted them with a friendly smile.“Oh, Ken, you’re back!”“Uncle Abrams.” Ken greeted him, immediately walking over and giving him a polite nod. “Sorry for making you wait for us, Uncle. Thank you for bringing Kienna to the hospital, too.”The man named Abrams waved his hand as though it were nothing worth mentioning.“Don’t mention it. We’ve been neighbors for years. Helping your family a little isn’t a big deal.”He took one of the bags from Kienna’s hand to help her carry it.“Come on, put your things in the car. You must want to go home and get some rest.”Ken opened the back door and placed his backpack inside, then helped arrange the bags of local specialties and gifts so they wouldn’t be piled up haphazardly. Kienna sat beside him, still hugging

  • 135. The Weight of Old Guilt

Ken and Kienna walked toward the hospital parking lot. After recalling something, Ken turned to his younger sister.“By the way, didn’t Dad buy a car? Didn’t Mom use it to come to the hospital?”Kienna’s pace slowed slightly. She let out a quiet snort before releasing a long sigh, as though his simple question had just reminded her of something incredibly frustrating.Ken immediately glanced at her.“Why are you sighing like that? I only asked about the car.”“Uncle is using it,” Kienna replied quietly.Ken furrowed his brows. He showed no particular surprise, as if the answer made perfect sense to him. Given how complicated their family relationships had always been, his father’s car being borrowed without much consideration was hardly surprising. However, Kienna seemed to have bottled up her frustration for far too long to let the conversation end there.“See? It’s always like this!” she grumbled, quickening her pace to catch up with Ken. “Dad bought that car with his own hard-earned

  • 134. Rocks from the city.

"But that must have been a while ago. Just eat a little. There's plenty of food here."Ken glanced at the lunch box, then smiled faintly."Mom, you can eat. I'll eat later when I'm hungry. Besides, I can go downstairs and buy something to eat."His mother shook her head with a smile, then closed the lunch box again and placed it on the table."All right. If you've already eaten, you don't have to force yourself."She studied Ken more carefully before adding, "But you need to rest, too. Go home and get some sleep. You can come back here later."Ken was about to refuse instinctively. He had only just arrived, and he didn't feel right about leaving his father, especially after learning that the older man hadn't fully recovered yet. However, when he glanced at the clock on the wall, he began to consider his mother's suggestion. The journey from the city had been exhausting, and he hadn't really rested since setting off. If he wanted to keep his father company tonight, forcing himself to st

  • 133. A Family Reunion Full of Banter

Their father's voice suddenly rang out from the bed, loud enough to make both siblings turn toward him at the same time."This is a hospital, not a marketplace! If you want to shout, get out and find somewhere else!"Ken blinked. Kienna immediately covered her mouth, trying to suppress the laughter threatening to escape her throat."Dad, I just got home. Are you really kicking me out already?" Ken put on a wounded expression. "I haven't even had a proper family welcome yet.""If your family welcome means listening to you two sound like a pair of fighting chickens, then you might as well go home!"Kienna finally couldn't hold back her laughter."He's right, Ken. It looks like Dad doesn't welcome you anymore."Ken shot her a sharp look. "Don't you start. Who was the one who nearly dropped her lunch box while running over to hug me just now?""That's because I was happy!""Then I'm entitled to be happy, too. Why am I the only one getting scolded?""Because you're the loudest!" Kienna shot
