“Look at this place, Isabella. It’s too crowded,” Cayden said softly as he stood near the back of the hall.

“It’s always like this during banquets,” Isabella replied. She adjusted the small purse in her hand. Her eyes moved around, watching the guests.

The laughter came from the tables. Visitors glasses were clinking. Guests were shaking hands and greeting one another. Voices overlapped as people talked about business, family, and their wealth.

Cayden glanced at the long tables. “There’s too much food here.”

“That’s how my family prepares,” Isabella answered quietly. “They don’t like to be outdone.”

Cayden lowered his eyes. His jacket was plain. His shoes were simple. He stood still, calm on the outside, but his hands were tight at his sides. Isabella did not look at him. Her head was slightly turned as she scanned the hall.

The doors opened wider, and the voices around them grew louder.

“Antonio is here,” one guest said.

“Finally, the man of the hour,” another added.

Antonio Villareal walked in with steady steps. His suit was sharp and new. His watch caught the light, it's really expensive. He raised his hand in greeting while smiling widely.

“Good evening, everyone,” Antonio said loudly. His voice carried across the hall. “It’s good to see all of you tonight!" Some guests clapped. Others called his name.

“Antonio, you always arrive in style!" one man near the front said.

Antonio gave a small laugh. “It’s not about the arrival. It’s about what you bring with you.”

"Thank you for gathering tonight. Before the event starts, I want to share something with you. I just bought a new car yesterday. It is parked outside. It is the latest model from Germany. It is worth millions. Please, if you have time, take a look at it.”

The guests clapped. Some stood and peeked outside. Their faces were full of admiration. The sound of approval filled the room.

Don Ricardo’s voice was loud. He stood and laughed as he looked at Antonio. “Antonio, you are impressive! You are the kind of man who knows success. You are a man of wealth. That car is proof. You deserve all the praise."

Don Ricardo’s eyes moved toward Cayden after he spoke. His face was firm, but his tone carried mockery. “Unlike some people here who cannot even provide a decent life for their wife. My daughter made a mistake, but maybe it is not too late to fix it.”

The guests chuckled. Their faces were turned toward Cayden. Isabella lowered her head. She did not speak. She stayed quiet, as if she did not want to be involved.

Antonio walked closer. His eyes were fixed on Cayden. His smile was mocking, even though his walk was slow but it still full of confidence.

“Cayden,” Antonio said. “Tell me, have you ever sat inside a car like mine? I doubt it. A man like you cannot afford such things. You probably take public transportation every day. Maybe a bus or an old jeep. Am I wrong?”

The people near them laughed. Their laughter was not soft. It was loud and cruel. Cayden did not move. His face was straight. His lips did not part. He was quiet and his silence only made the laughter sharper.

Don Ricardo raised his glass and looked at Isabella. His voice was serious. “Isabella, look carefully. Look at Antonio. He is wealthy. He is strong and capable. He is the kind of man any woman would choose. Your husband has nothing. He is a burden! You should not waste your life. Divorce him while you still can. Think about your future.”

The table was full of nodding heads. The words were clear. Isabella’s hand was shaking slightly as she held her purse. She did not raise her head. She did not answer. Her lips were pressed together.

Antonio’s smile grew wider. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. He opened it slowly, making sure the people around could see. He took out several bills. His hand lifted, and he waved the money in front of Cayden’s face.

“Here,” Antonio said. “Take this. You need it, don’t you? You look like you can use some cash. At least you can buy yourself decent clothes. Or maybe a good meal. Take it. A beggar should not be too proud.”

The people laughed again. Their eyes were on Cayden. Some of them leaned forward to see if he would take the money. Their voices are always mocking him.

“Go on, Cayden. Don’t waste the chance!"

“Even a little help might be good for you.”

“He should kneel for it. That would be better.”

Cayden looked at the money. His eyes were steady. Yet his hand did not move, as he words finally came out, calm and low.

“I don’t need your money,” Cayden said.

The hall went quiet for a moment. Antonio’s hand froze. Then his smile returned. He pulled the bills back slowly. His voice was louder now, and the tone was mocking again.

“Of course, you don’t need it. Pride is the only thing you have left. Keep it, then. Stay poor. Stay useless. At least you know your place.”

The silence was broken by louder laughter. Don Ricardo laughed. Marco laughed. The relatives around the table laughed. Their faces were bright with ridicule.

Cayden's back was straight. His eyes did not move from Antonio. His fists were tight at his sides already. His jaw was locked, while trying so hard to remain compose.

Isabella’s hand lifted her glass slowly. She did not look at Cayden. She turned her head away. Her eyes were on the floor.

The laughter continued. The people were enjoying the scene. The sound of insult was clear in every corner.

Cayden did not speak again. His face was calm, but his eyes were cold. His silence was his only answer. The night was long, but the moment was set. Antonio was laughing. Don Ricardo was smiling. The family was mocking. Isabella was turning away.

Cayden remained standing, alone in the middle of it all, but until when he can endure it all, knowing the woman he loves can't even say a single word to fight for him?

“Diego.” “You finally picked up.” Diego’s voice came warm through the line. “Where are you calling from? It sounds like the city is awake behind you.” “In the office. Late,” Cayden answered. “I just finished a meeting. I needed to hear a voice I trust.” “You know I am always here.” Diego’s tone went soft for a second. “Tell me straight. How are you, really?” “I am fine,” Cayden said. “Busy. Focused.” “Fine doesn’t mean nothing is wrong,” Diego pushed. “You and I spent years abroad. We worked on the pieces of your life. We built this. You can tell me if there is one corner you still avoid.” There was a pause. Cayden breathed out. “Isabella came to the forum today,” he said finally. “She defended me.” “I saw the footage,” Diego said. “I saw her defend you in front of everyone. Your ex in-laws must have hated that.” “They did,” Cayden said. “They called me other names. They tried to humiliate me again last week.” “Then why are you telling me this now?” Diego asked. “Do you still

  • Chapter 28: The Unexpected Defense

“Cayden, how exactly did you acquire such control in just a few years?” Zhao asked, voice dripping with disbelief. “It seems… convenient, don’t you think?” A few other executives snickered, glancing toward the audience to see who might support their insinuation. All eyes subtly shifted to Isabella, seated among her family’s associates. “She’s going to side with them,” one murmured under their breath. “She always did.” Cayden’s jaw tightened, but he maintained a calm exterior, folding his hands over the podium. “I built my path through hard work, calculated decisions, and strategic partnerships,” he said evenly, holding the attention of the room. Victor smirked, leaning forward. “Hard work? Or luck? Or perhaps… someone’s family backing you?” Cayden smirked, Mortaine's mistakes from the past seem repeating now. Whispers rippled through the forum. Every eye in the room seemed to glance at Isabella. A few executives nudged her, encouraging her to speak up, expecting her to public

  • Chapter 27: The Secret Alliance

“Enough of that begging,” Don Ricardo said, voice hard in the dim study. “I will not crawl to that arrogant Cayden again. Not after what he did to us.” “We had no choice,” his wife murmured, eyes rimmed red. “Cayden humiliated us. He humiliated our name. But, we needed him. We had to kneel.” “Kneel?” Marco spat, leaning forward. “We’re Mortaine! We don’t kneel. We retaliate. We break him.” “You tried,” Don Ricardo snapped. “You failed. You got nothing but public shame for your trouble.” “Because I acted alone,” Marco replied, jaw tight. “If I had true backing, if I had someone with the power to move pieces quietly, it would be different.” A new voice, smooth and low, made them all look up. “Power can be bought. Loyalties can be shifted. Men like Cayden rely on images. Image is fragile.” They turned. Mr. Zhao stood in the doorway, hands folded, a calm smile on his face. He carried no papers, but confidence only, despite the fact that Cayden also humiliated him before. “Who invi

  • Chapter 26: The Ex-Wife’s Plea

“Cayden… please, can we talk?” The voice trembled. It's soft yet urgent, cutting through the quiet of the office. Cayden didn’t look up. His pen moved across the papers with steady precision. “I’m busy.” “Busy?” Isabella's voice cracked. “You always find time for everything else… but not for me?” “I said I’m busy,” Cayden repeated, his tone is flat, leaving no room for argument. Isabella took a step closer, her hands clasped tightly. “I… I need to explain. I made mistakes. I—” “You need to explain? Again?” Cayden’s voice was sharper now, and he finally lifted his gaze. “You made your choice. You abandoned me. What is there left to explain?” “I…” Her throat tightened. “I didn’t know… I thought—” “Thought what?” Cayden asked coldly. “That I would wait forever? That I would beg and never move on?” “I never meant to hurt you!” Isabella’s hands shook, tears slipping down her cheeks. “I… I loved you. I thought I was doing the right thing, following my family…” She's feeling ho

  • Chapter 25: You've Already Lost

“Cayden!” His voice was loud in the lobby, making people turn to look. Cayden lifted his gaze from the folder in his hand, it doesn't even make him flinched a bit, as Mr. Villarreal stormed forward. His suit looked neat under the lights, and his shoes made a steady sound as he walked. There was something in the way he moved that felt full of pride. “You’re really here,” Villarreal sneered, sounding harsh and mocking. “I almost didn’t recognize you without your cheap rags. But then again, some things never change. A beggar will always be a beggar.” The words came out sharp, his smirk making them sting even more. A few people nearby glanced over, sensing the upcoming tension between them. “Mr. Villarreal.” Cayden didn’t flinch at all, standing firm as if the insult hadn’t touched him. His face stayed calm, almost too calm. Villarreal barked a laugh, making sure the gathering businessmen and socialites nearby could hear. “Don’t ‘Mr.’ me as if we’re equals. You? You’re the man who u

  • Chapter 24: I Bury Them

“Mr. X, your… your ex-father-in-law is here.” “My what?” Cayde’s pen froze mid-signature. His sharp tone made the secretary’s shoulders lock. “He… he insisted, sir. He said he’s your father-in-law.” Cayden leaned back in his chair, he gave a crooked, mocking smirk “Father-in-law? That old man. I didn’t know corpses could walk through my doors.” The secretary opened her mouth to respond, but the door banged open. Ricardo Mortaine marched in with forced bravado, his once-polished shoes scuffed, and his suit trying too hard to look respectable. “Cayden, my son-in-law!” Ricardo boomed, stretching his arms wide, and when he heard his voice and saw his bright face, he really thought that Mortaine's really getting crazy because of what's happening to them. Cayden’s face hardened. “You’ve got some nerve. I told you clearly that any of your family must not show their face to me unless I told you so." “Son-in-law, I came to talk,” Ricardo insisted quickly, his voice slick with urgency.
