Chapter 6

“She already went to the hospital, I’m sure she just needs to sleep to be fine.” Barbara hurriedly nodded, agreeing with him.

Unfolding his arms, a thought suddenly occurred to Ian and his eyes shot toward Alaric.

“Now that I think of it, wasn’t Selene slacking off at work this week? Grandfather, I think she did this on purpose to get medical leave!”

“Ah, how cunning. If she wanted time off, she could’ve just asked. I’m certain father would’ve been glad to give her leave… permanently.” Megan chimed in with a snort.

Barbara panicked.

After falling out of favor with his father, Benjamin Ward’s income, considerably reduced.

But as the young person in the household, Selene earned three times more than him and sustained the family with it.

So at the thought of their source of livelihood being taken away, Barbara’s eyes snapped toward Megan fearfully.

“Don’t talk like that, Megan. You’ve known Selene since she was born. She’s too hardworking for that.”

Feeling the bridge of her nose, Megan simply laughed.

“Are you saying you don’t mind your daughter returning to work even with a stab wound?”

“My Selene is hardworking. This is nothing but a piece of cake to her,” the woman quickly nodded.

Megan’s lips twitched and she leaned forward to tease, “That’s quite cruel, Aunt Barbara. Your daughter clearly needs time to recover.”

“Even if she earns more than Uncle Benjamin, making her work while she’s still bleeding is a little too much, don’t you think?”

The words were barely out of her mouth when Barbara nodded vigorously.

“Selene will think it crueler once she realizes our family has no income this month. Please, let her return to work tomorrow.”

Behind her, Dante’s eyes clouded over.

The Ward family… they weren’t even in the top fifty families in the nation, but they were the worst he had ever encountered, especially how they treated their own.

If only he were still Supreme Commander…

“Our Ward family hasn’t closed a deal worth more than a hundred million in over two years,” Alaric said suddenly, throwing a stern glance Barbara’s way.

“If Selene can do it in the next month, I’ll consider letting her remain in the company.”

At this, Dante’s gaze flicked toward him, doing nothing to hide the disgust in his eyes.

This pathetic excuse of a grandfather… giving a girl he deliberately disconnected from all contacts this task?

If he remembered correctly, he never even let her attend social functions. So she literally knew no one.

This was basically him asking him setting her up for failure which would then lead to her resigning in humiliation.

“F-Father, even you haven’t met anyone willing to buy a house for that much. How do you expect Selene, who barely leaves the office, to…”

As expected, Benjamin realized how impossible such a task was for his daughter and was on the verge of complaining when Alaric cut him off, gnashing his teeth indignantly.

“What did you just say to me? Your wife begged me to give your daughter another chance. If you don’t want it, just say so!”

Benjamin instantly went mute and lowered his head apologetically, while Ian’s mocking laughter filled the air before he stated the obvious.

“In other words, Aunt and Uncle, don’t bother having Selene return to the company. In fact, let her chase that little dream of hers… what was it again? Ah yes, a fixer.”

Barbara smiled forcefully, “Selene’s a smart girl. I’m sure when she wakes up and I tell her, she’ll find a way to close that deal.”

“Good. Your daughter has a month to get this deal done. It’d be good if she returns to Gordon Heffley to persuade him.” Alaric breathed out, then shifted his gaze to Ian, “Ian, call the family doctor and send him to the South Wing to help your cousin.”

Ian hummed in response and walked off to make the call while Dante lifted the unconscious Selene into his arms and headed to the South Wing.

Unlike the other wings owned by Benjamin Ward’s two younger siblings, the South Wing was a shabby duplex, even worse than the servants’ quarters and far from the main house.

So it took him a few minutes to get there.

About seven minutes later, a middle-aged man in a white coat hurried in to examine her.

As he did, Dante stood at the balcony, thinking through everything he knew about the Ward family.

For one thing, Alaric Ward was a conceited bastard. To him, every one of his children and grandchildren was just a means to get richer.

Obviously, this task to Selene was his way of cutting off the family of his deadweight first son.

It was also a good excuse if he was ever asked why he did such a thing by an outsider.

Since Selene’s standing in Alaric’s eyes had only worsened after she married him, Dante knew what he had to do.

That night, after Barbara and Benjamin went to bed, he changed out of his clothes and slipped out of the house.

Ivory District, where the Ward family lived, had seven phases. The Ward mansion was in the fifth.

From the third phase upward, military bodyguards were stationed outside every gate to keep uninvited guests out.

As he neared the third gate, he pulled out his phone and began browsing the internet for someone.

The guards noticed him standing near the gate and walked over to ward him off.

“Did you come to see someone?”

“Not at all, but I came to meet someone. I just need you to give him a call for me.” He responded without raising his head.

The military bodyguards exchanged amused looks before one of them stepped forward to shove him back.

“This is Phase 3. If you weren’t invited, you don’t belong here. I’ll ask you only once to leave unless you want us to make you.”

“Give me a moment.” Dante murmured, raising a finger at them.

A second later, he stopped scrolling when he found the person he was looking for.

Ignoring the guards, he raised his eyes and pointed at the surveillance cameras around.

“These cameras… can you transmit a live feed to anyone in Phase 3?”

“If you’re asking whether we’ll get in trouble for dragging you off, no, we won’t. The people we work for don’t care about footage like that.”

Dante shrugged and slipped his phone back into his pocket.

“Perfect.”

He was a little stiff after going five years with no martial exercise, so he began stretching.

Seeing a ‘civilian’ stretching to obviously take them irritated the bodyguard who shoved him earlier, prompting him to whip his baton toward Dante.

“Tsk! I’ve changed my mind. At first, I thought to just beat him and toss him out on the road, but he’s so annoying I say we bury him!”

Instantly, Megan sat up, her face reddening with anger.“What are you doing?”“I came to buy a house. Why do you seem to have a problem with that?” A question originally directed at Selene was answered by the woman as she whipped her head around to stare stoically at Megan. Megan’s face instantly darkened.“What is this? It’s not that I have a problem with you embarrassing yourself, I just have a problem with you wasting our time.”Then she paused and threw a death glare Selene’s way. “And you… you heard everything that happened here, yet you went out and called her back in? What do you know about customers that Ian and I don’t?” Before Selene could respond in her own defense, the woman, who hadn’t shown a single sign of aggression earlier, regarded Megan coldly.“She didn’t call me back in. I told her I want to buy a house. Why are you being so rude?”“R–rude? Since when does telling people to know their place translate to being rude?” Megan was first taken aback before she huffed,

The woman hadn’t toned down her voice, so Megan heard her loud and clear.A staff member who’d done the same turned to look the woman over. When she saw the chef-stained apron, she immediately frowned and quickly came to a biased assumption.“If you’re looking to rent an apartment, this is not the right place to do it.”Surprised, the woman turned to her. “I was told this is a real estate agency.”“It is. But Wards Royal Estate has nothing the likes of you can afford,” the staff scoffed, turning to face her squarely.“Excuse me?” The woman blurted out in surprise, wiping her hands again on her apron.Seeing this, Megan thinned her lips, taking her time to look the woman over as well. She wore a hair bonnet and a mouth guard. The oily chef’s apron already said enough about her profession, but the thick smell of smoke oozing from her made Megan rethink. If this woman worked in a hotel, she wouldn’t reek of such thick smoke. So if she didn’t, then she likely worked in a dump or somewhere

When Selene Ward woke up the next morning, the first thing she heard was what happened last night and the decisions her parents had made without her input. At breakfast, Barbara continued in irritation, “Your grandfather is going out on a limb to keep you in the company. Work hard and don’t make his efforts go to waste.”“If you have to do some things with those rich scions to get them to buy a house, make sure you get their signatures on the documents first. And secondly, make sure they’re not taping anything with your face in it.”Scraping his chair back, Benjamin Ward stood and threw a stern glance at his daughter.“You’re way prettier than your cousins, so I know you can get any man you want if you put your heart into it. For once in your life, listen to your mother and me.”“If you don’t do whatever it takes to get a signature on that document, I’ll curse you forever for making my already miserable life even more miserable.”Kicking her feet in the air aggressively, Barbara glare

Dante’s arm shot out, grabbed it, and casually lifted and tossed a man weighing 180kg behind him.Three minutes later, he dragged the tenth unconscious man to the wall, then tapped on the window.“I just need you to call the home of Michael Slater and hand me the phone.”At this, the cowering man inside did as told and threw out the phone.“I’m not expecting any visitors. If there’s anyone there who claims to be from me, send them away,” the sleepy, scruffy voice of a man filtered through the receiver as soon as the call connected.“Mick, in three weeks, I need you to find someone who’ll buy an apartment from Wards Royal Estate.”There was a brief silence on the other end before the voice sharpened, disbelief oozing through it as he stuttered, “S-Supreme Commander Wynn?”Resting on the wall, Dante sucked in his teeth, “Look at your surveillance footage and tell me if there’s anyone bold enough to cause such a scene outside Phase 3.”For almost a minute, the other end was so silent tha
