The Iron-Weaver Broodmother didn't move like a biological creature. She moved like a machine.

Her eight legs, tipped with obsidian spikes, tapped rhythmically against the stone floor. Click. Click. Click.

Kai stepped back, his back touching a cold, silk-wrapped cocoon. He quickly scanned the boss's stats again.

[Iron-Weaver Broodmother]

[Level: 8]

[Status: Hungry]

"Level 8," Kai swallowed hard. "That's six levels above me. If she bites me once, I'm dead."

He looked at his hand. He had the [Flashbang] ready. It was his only crowd-control card. It had worked on the goblins. It had to work here.

"Hey! Ugly!" Kai shouted, waving his arms.

The Broodmother hissed. Her mandibles opened, dripping sizzling purple venom. She lowered her body, tensing her legs for a lunge.

"Now!"

Kai crushed the yellow card.

BANG!

A supernova of white light exploded in the dim cavern. The flash was intense enough to burn retinas even through eyelids.

The Broodmother shrieked—a high-pitched sound that shattered the silence. She thrashed wildly, clawing at her face.

--------------------------------------------------

[Effect Applied: Blindness (5 seconds)]

--------------------------------------------------

"It worked!"

Kai didn't hesitate. This was his only window. He summoned the [Rusted Dagger].

He sprinted to the right, aiming to flank her. The spider was thrashing in the center, blind and confused. Kai targeted the soft tissue joint where her armored leg met her body.

"Die!" Kai shouted, leaping for the strike.

But just as his feet left the ground, the Broodmother stopped thrashing.

She didn't look with her eyes. She swiveled her head toward him with terrifying precision.

Her leg snapped out like a whip.

"What—"

SLAM.

The armored leg hit Kai mid-air. It felt like being hit by a swinging log.

Kai flew across the room. He smashed into a pile of rocks, rolling three times before coming to a painful stop.

--------------------------------------------------

[Damage Taken: -25 HP]

[HP: 35/60]

[System Alert: Rib Fracture re-opened.]

--------------------------------------------------

Kai coughed, tasting blood. "How? She was blind!"

A blue notification window popped up, answering his question with cruel indifference.

--------------------------------------------------

[Analysis: Enemy possesses [Tremor Sense].]

[She can detect movement through vibrations in the ground.]

--------------------------------------------------

"Vibrations..." Kai realized, horrified. "Running just made me a louder target."

The Broodmother recovered from the flash. Her eight red eyes locked onto him again. She didn't rush this time. She stalked him, savoring the fear.

Kai struggled to his feet. He looked at his right hand. He was still holding the dagger.

"One chance," Kai gasped. "I have to pierce her armor."

He didn't run this time. He waited.

The spider lunged, jaws snapping.

Kai ducked under the venomous bite, sliding on his knees across the smooth stone. He was directly underneath her. The soft underbelly exposed.

"Got you!"

Kai thrust the [Rusted Dagger] upward with both hands, putting all his strength into the stab.

The tip of the blade hit the black chitin of her stomach.

CRACK.

There was no squelch of flesh. There was only the sound of brittle metal snapping.

The rusted blade, already weakened by the acid from the spiderlings, couldn't withstand the impact against the Boss-tier armor. The blade shattered into useless shards of iron dust.

--------------------------------------------------

[System Alert: Weapon Destroyed!]

[Card Lost: Rusted Dagger]

--------------------------------------------------

"No..." Kai stared at the empty hilt in his hand.

The Broodmother looked down at the pest beneath her. She raised her body and slammed down, trying to crush him.

Kai rolled away frantically, barely avoiding being flattened.

He scrambled backward until his back hit the cave wall. There was nowhere left to run.

He checked his deck.

* [Rusted Dagger]: Destroyed.

* [Flashbang]: Cooldown (9 minutes).

* [Scavenger Rat]: Useless against armor.

* [The Wildcard].

The spider loomed over him, blocking out the light. She raised her two front legs, ready to skewer him like a kebab.

Kai looked at his Aether.

[Aether: 9/12]

He had no weapon. He had no tricks. He had no escape.

He looked at the glitching, unstable card in his interface. The card that had given him a spoon. The card that had given him a party popper.

"Well," Kai smiled, blood staining his teeth. "I guess it's all in."

He reached for the Wildcard.

Kai’s flight from the Command Tower had been a chaotic blur. He navigated through dark service tunnels and drainage ducts, putting distance between himself and that insufferable Dampening Field. General Varrus’s false data had successfully bought him time by distracting the pursuers, but Kai knew Varrus would have already predicted that he’d discard the bait and head for something of actual value.Kai finally reached his destination: **The Experimental Material Warehouse.**The warehouse was a massive, heavily guarded hangar, filled with crates marked with nuclear and biological hazard warnings. The scent of ozone and hot metal hung thick in the air. This was the mechanical heart of the Iron Guild’s war machine.Kai slipped inside through a small gap in a ventilation window, recalling a weary **Volt-Eater**."Rest, friend," Kai whispered, returning the chrome rodent to its card. Bound by the weight of General Varrus’s psychological feints, Kai knew he could no longer rely on standard logic. The Tactical Data he had pilfered from the Communications Station was merely bait; he had to find the **forbidden** information—the secrets Varrus himself kept buried.Kai’s new target: **The High Command Tower.**If the Communications Station was the sector’s ears, then the Command Tower was its brain, the sanctuary where Varrus stored his most classified stratagems.Kai sheathed his **[Twin Daggers]**. He couldn't afford an open engagement with Varrus’s legions; he had to employ his true expertise: infiltration and the sowing of discord. He retreated into the ventilation tunnels, moving through the shadows to evade the Omega-4 patrols that marched in seamless formations, guided by the very false data Varrus had fed him.[STATUS: Dampening Field Active. The Communications Station sat at the heart of Sector 3’s Support District—a vast chamber filled with flickering data screens and complex control panels. Kai’s objective was clear: steal General Varrus’s Tactical Schematics. However, to reach it, he first had to navigate the **Suppression Corridor**.The slow, rhythmic footsteps of the Elite Praetorian Squad—forced by Varrus into a non-RNG formation—echoed from both ends of the hallway. They weren't rushing. They were simply waiting for Kai to make a mistake.Kai crouched behind a stack of logistics crates, observing the Praetorian movements."Three in front, three behind," Kai whispered. "Moving in slow increments, maintaining a perfect crossfire formation. If I strike with the Chaos Daggers now, I only have a 15% chance to proc Paralysis or Corrosion. The risk is too high."He had to rely on pure wit. He had to win this fight as a Level 15 rogue, stripped of his signature edge.Kai released the **[Cyber-Rat]**. The chrome rodent lan

  • 62 THE GENERAL'S STRATEGY

General Varrus did not shout. He did not snap. He simply stood at the center of Sector 3’s command hub, watching the carnage in Hangar Gamma unfold on the holographic displays before him."Report on the status of Anomaly 07-Chaos," Varrus commanded.Varrus was a middle-aged man with a face carved by relentless discipline. He wore a crisp white uniform adorned with shimmering silver medals. His Level was 25, yet his true power lay not in muscle, but within the cold machinery of his mind.A uniformed aide, Captain Reyna, reported sharply. "The Praetorian units failed to secure a lock on the target. Snipers were neutralized by a thick steam shroud. He is currently fleeing through Drainage Conduit B-7. We have activated Mana Scramblers in the vicinity."Varrus gave a subtle nod. "A tactical error, Captain. Never hunt a rat inside a labyrinth of pipes. He is a rogue; he expects violence. He thrives in it."He tapped the screen, pulling up Kai’s data stolen from the Iron Guild archives. The

  • 60 THE GRAND MASTER'S HAND

The air in the Sky Bar crackled as Silas's Arcane Sentinels efficiently subdued Baron Gearhart. The Level 35 Techno-Mage, stripped of his guards and his financial network, looked pathetically human as his elaborate white armor was detached piece by piece."You failed, Silas!" Gearhart shrieked, his synthetic voice cracking with genuine, desperate rage. "You chose chaos over progress! The Spire will burn you for this!""The Spire respects the rules of commerce, Baron," Silas countered coolly, overseeing the confiscation of the Baron's assets. "And the first rule is: never cheat the house."Gearhart's remaining guards—including Marcus—were arrested and dragged out. The crisis was over.Silas turned his attention to Kai, who was retrieving the **Ascension Master-Override Code** left behind by Gearhart."A victory for honest gambling," Silas remarked, offering Kai a warm glass of brandy.
