The villa was filled with the noise of electric drills and sledgehammers. Luke and his crew were working as fast as they could, but with workers reinforcing the walls and installing security barriers everywhere, Calder had no chance of getting a good night's sleep.

He left the villa and walked to the main road, where he hailed a taxi. “Diamond Luxe Hotel,” he told the driver before leaning back in his seat.

Twenty minutes later, the taxi stopped outside the most luxurious hotel in downtown Oakhaven. Calder entered the lobby and walked straight to the front desk.

“Welcome to Diamond Luxe, sir. Do you have a reservation?”

“I need your best presidential suite for fifteen days. I'll pay the full amount upfront.”

He placed his bank card on the counter. The receptionist was surprised by his request, but she quickly processed the payment. Once the transaction went through, her attitude became noticeably more respectful.

“Of course, Mr. Reid. We’ll arrange everything for you. As a presidential suite guest, you’ll also have a personal butler available around the clock. This is Chloe, and she’ll take care of your needs during your stay.”

A slender woman with dark, wavy hair stepped forward. Her fitted skirt and silk blouse gave her an elegant appearance, and she greeted Calder with a warm smile.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Reid. Please follow me.”

Chloe led him to the top floor and showed him into the suite. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a clear view of the city, while the spacious bedroom was furnished with everything a guest could want. After putting down his bag and preparing some water, Chloe lingered beside him instead of leaving.

“Mr. Reid, our service goes beyond meals and housekeeping,” she said softly. “Guests like you work hard and carry a lot of stress. If you’d like some company tonight, you only need to ask. I’m here to make your stay as comfortable as possible.”

As she spoke, she loosened the top buttons of her blouse and reached toward his jacket.

Calder stepped away before she could touch him. He looked at her without the slightest interest. In less than two weeks, the city would be swallowed by disaster, and all this luxury would mean nothing.

“Step back,” he said coldly.

Chloe’s smile faltered. “Mr. Reid, I was only trying to—”

“Button your blouse and leave. I don’t want anyone disturbing me before tomorrow morning.”

Embarrassed, Chloe fixed her clothes and hurried out. Calder locked the door, took a hot shower, and ordered a proper meal from the hotel kitchen. For the first time in days, he could eat and rest without worrying about construction noise or supply deliveries.

After dinner, he checked the countdown on his phone. Twelve days remained until the apocalypse. He put the phone aside and went to sleep, determined to make the most of the quiet.

The next morning, Calder woke refreshed and ate breakfast before heading to the high-end shopping plaza connected to the hotel. His base was being reinforced, and most of his essential supplies had already been ordered. Now he needed durable winter clothing that could withstand the coming cold.

He was approaching an outdoor apparel boutique when someone called his name from behind.

“Calder? Is that you?”

He turned and saw a familiar woman walking toward him. She was tall and elegant, with her dark hair neatly pinned up and a charcoal business suit that suited her confident manner.

It was Laurel Anderson, the beauty of their college department. After graduation, she built a successful career and became the president of Anderson Enterprise.

“Laurel,” Calder said with a faint smile. “It’s been a long time.”

“I can’t believe I finally ran into you!” Laurel said happily. “I’ve been trying to find your contact information for months. If you hadn’t lent me money to support my project back in college, I might never have been able to start my company. I’ve always wanted to thank you properly.”

“You made your company successful through your own hard work,” Calder replied. “There’s no need to keep bringing up the past.”

Laurel laughed. “You haven’t changed at all. Are you shopping for winter clothes? I was about to visit this boutique myself. Why don’t we look around together?”

Calder agreed, and they entered the store side by side.

They had barely reached the clothing displays when a mocking laugh came from the VIP section.

“Well, look who it is!”

Garrick Holt walked toward them with an expensive leather jacket draped over his arm. His girlfriend, Philippa, a commercial model dressed in designer clothes and high heels, clung to his side.

Garrick recognized Calder immediately. His eyes then shifted to Laurel, and a sneer spread across his face.

“Calder Reid, you really are shameless,” he said loudly enough for the nearby staff to hear. “Tamsin told me everything. You took what you could from her family, then ran off as soon as things stopped going your way. I thought you’d be sleeping on the streets by now, but you’ve already found another rich woman to support you!”

Philippa covered her mouth and giggled. “So this is the man you told me about? He looks completely ordinary. I guess some women really will pick up anyone off the street.”

Laurel’s expression hardened. She stepped forward, looking directly at Garrick.

“Watch your mouth. Calder is my friend, and I won’t stand here while you insult him. If you continue, I’ll have Anderson Enterprise review its distribution contracts with your family.”

Garrick’s face tightened, but he quickly recovered his arrogant expression.

“President Anderson, you’ve clearly been fooled. This man spent years living off the Lowen family. He cooked, cleaned, and did their laundry because he had nothing of his own. Now he’s attached himself to you, hoping you’ll buy him whatever he wants.”

He glanced at Calder’s clothes and laughed. “You can dress him up, but that won’t change what he is. He probably couldn’t even afford the tax on a coat in this store.”

Philippa nodded in agreement. “Exactly. He doesn’t look like he belongs here at all.”

Calder had no interest in arguing with them. He turned to the sales assistant standing behind the counter and pointed toward the winter collection.

“Pack up everything on that display wall,” he said. “The down jackets, winter clothes, wool coats, everything. Include every available size and prepare it all for delivery.”

Garrick stared at him for a moment before bursting into laughter.

“Everything? Do you even know how much that would cost? Stop putting on a show just to impress President Anderson. She might be willing to help you, but surely she isn’t foolish enough to pay for all this.”

Calder ignored him and waited calmly while the sales assistant began counting the items. Laurel stood beside him without offering to pay, watching the exchange with quiet confidence.

A few minutes later, the assistant returned with the bill. She swallowed nervously before speaking.

“Sir, the forty-eight coats, and other winter clothing come to a total of $180,000.”

Philippa’s smile disappeared. She tightened her grip on Garrick’s arm, staring at Calder in surprise. She had assumed he was just a broke man looking for another woman to support him, but he had ordered an entire display of winter clothing without hesitation.

Laurel glanced at Calder, wondering if the man she knew from college was far more capable than he appeared.

We only keep in touch because of business, and he won’t mind me coming here.” She looked up at Calder with innocent eyes. “You know I’ve always loved you most.”Calder sneered inwardly. This woman could lie without even blinking, but he kept his expression gentle.“Have you been waiting long?”“Not at all. I wouldn’t mind waiting for hours if it meant seeing you.”“Come in first.”Tamsin followed him into the presidential suite. Tamsin flinched at her mother's words, her stomach twisting with anger.“Sleep with him? Mom, do you even care about my dignity? I'm your daughter!”“Dignity won't buy your brother a house or a car!” Martha snapped. “Besides, have you forgotten about Calder's mother's jade pendant? He agreed to give it to you, didn't he? That was his mother's most precious keepsake. If he really wanted nothing to do with you, why would he hand it over?”Tamsin fell silent. She had been so focused on the money and the trouble with Garrick that she hadn't considered this possibility.“Think about it,” Martha continued. “Calder is just throwing a tantrum because we pushed him too far. He still has feelings for you, or he wouldn't be willing to give you something so important. Put your pride aside and talk to him nicely. Once you win him back, his money and that villa will be within our reach again.”Tamsin bit her lip. The thought of lowering herself to beg Calder made her furious, but she couldn't ignor

How can you still be thinking about Tamsin?”Calder turned away from the window and sighed. He wore a troubled expression, as though he had no choice in the matter.“You don't understand, Sian. Tamsin was my wife for three years. She keeps calling me, demanding that I take her back, and threatening to make trouble if I refuse. No matter how many times I tell her it's over, she won't leave me alone.”“That shameless woman!” Sian spat, her fingers tightening around the duvet. “She drove you out of your own home, and now that you've got money, she wants you back? What does she take you for?”Calder lowered his eyes and shook his head. “I don't want to get dragged into another fight with her.
