2 The Punishment

Alex didn't need to look at the face to know who it was. He recognised her from the voice and the ear grab, it was the matron.

'What does she want from me?' He thought in panic, 'I made sure I cleaned all that mess.'

"So you thought that you could act however you like in this orphanage and get away with it right?" The matron asked, her eyes were blazing with the desire to discipline the frail boy in her arms.

"I'm s..s..sorry ma'am. I'm really sorry." Alex blurted out.

Rule number one to survive as a weak child in the orphanage; always be sorry about everything or they would mistake your innocence for arrogance and punish you dearly for it.

Alex understood that and apologised profusely to the matron even though he knew that he didn't do anything wrong.

"Your apologies will not restore the food that you wasted earlier, will they?" The matron asked fiercely,

'So that's what this is about...' Alex thought,

"The other kids told me that you spilt your dinner and made fun of the food and me. Did you think that I wouldn't find out?"

Alex looked up in horror at the lies that had been levelled against him. He couldn't even understand how the matron would believe such lies. Did he look like someone who could do that?

However, there was no time to be confounded. He quickly began to apologise knowing that if he denied it, the matron would assume that he was calling her a liar and that would not end well for him.

"I'm sorry matron, I don't know what came over me. I am really sorry," Alex begged,

"Keep your apologies to yourself. When I am done with you, I am going to make sure you do not ever think of repeating your actions today ever again."

Alex's heart dropped into his stomach when he heard the matron's words. He didn't know the exact punishment she had in store for him but the woman was very notorious for giving inhumane punishments. He could only hope that his own punishment would be bearable. He had not had any dinner, and he hoped he wouldn't faint.

Firstly, the matron took him to the cook's room. The cook was a perverse obese man who lived in the orphanage. He liked little boys, and the management of the orphanage knew this but since he had not done anything wrong yet, there was no need to sack him because they knew that if they did, it would be difficult to find another good cook for the kids.

The matron knew that an experience with the cook would traumatise Alex forever and that was why she took him there while she watched as the cook tied Alex up, stripped him completely and whipped him while playing with him.

After that ordeal, Alex's eyes became cold and hollow. He walked back to the lodge with the matron in silence. The woman seemed to be proud of herself for some unknown reason while Alex mulled within himself. His innocence had just been taken from him and he had been exposed to the world's dirtiest man ever. Alex was filled with nothing but hate. He hated the cook, he hated the matron, he hated Flash, he hated all the kids in the orphanage, he hated the world.

It was at that very moment that Alex's conviction to acquire magic grew stronger than ever. If his savings weren't enough to get him a runestone then he would have to steal one. The thought of doing a bad thing didn't even make him flinch because from then on, Alex believed that he would do anything possible to rise in life— anything possible.

The orphanage was bustling with excited little boys. They were chattering endlessly and moving about with no particular direction in mind. It was the day before the Awakening when all the 15-year-olds in the kingdom would go to the town market to buy their runestones.

Alex was sitting quietly in a corner. His eyes were cold and hollow. There was no emotion — not even fear when Flash and his gang stepped up before him.

Flash had never paid much mind to Alex aside from the fact that he was a good victim to bully. So he did not notice the drastic change in the atmosphere around Alex. He did notice that Alex had become quieter since the food incident but aside from that, he didn't notice anything else.

It was a good day so he was in no mood to hurt anyone, he just wanted to tease Alex but when he looked into Alex's empty, scary eyes, he felt reluctant. However, his gang was behind him so he couldn't back away, he inflated himself and towered over Alex's small stature.

"I can see that someone is actually deluding himself into believing that he might actually get a runestone today."

Alex ignored him.

"Well, let me tell you something, there are no runestones for hopeless people like you. People like you are doomed to be at the lowest rung of society for the rest of their lives. Bottom feeder!" Flash spat on him and walked away with his gang to cheers from the other kids.

'Well, I am going to prove all of you wrong!'

Alex thought as he wiped the spittle off his hair and thrust his hands into his pockets to rattle his two bronze coins — his entire savings. They were not much in terms of savings, but those were all he had since there was not much to do in the orphanage to get money since no one liked him and he was too weak to do much hard work. Those were the two coins he came in with since he came into the orphanage and he had held onto them ever since. Today, he hoped they would be able to get him a runestone.

Any runestone would do, as long as it had magic within it.

Very soon, the boys were taken to the market to go and shop for runestones.

There was a crack there. The crystal ball was made of a material that was almost indestructible. It was done so that it would be able to withstand different amounts of magic without breaking. But Alex had casually cracked it."This kid..." the supervisor muttered as Alex left, "we might have a beast in our hands."Alex could feel all the eyes on him as he walked back to where the other candidates were standing. "Is he the one who was given an S rank?""I can't believe it. He doesn't look like an S rank.""I guess we shouldn't judge a book by its cover."But amidst all the stares, the one he derived the most pride in was Damon's. Damon's gaze was filled with surprise, anger, hate and jealousy. Alex felt like walking up to him and laughing in his face. All throughout their training, Damon had looked down on Alex because he believed that because he was from a noble family, he was superior to Alex who was a commoner. 'Fate has no favorites huh...' Alex thought as he spared Damon a brie

The scoreboard also rapidly updated the supervisors' scores in real time.At the end of the first phase; the 800 candidates were ranked on the scoreboard.Alex found himself feeling strangely nervous as his eyes scanned the scoreboard for his name.He started from the bottom and yet he still hadn't found it."....400...300...200...100...50...25...15...10... oh, there it is."He had conveniently landed at the 5th position. He turned to look at the multitude of candidates gathered there for their evaluation and thought, 'can I really be the 5th 'strongest' candidate here?'He shook his head and turned back to the scoreboard, 'I guess master Ken was right... his training really set us apart. By the way who are the 4 stronger than I am?'Damon was 2nd.'Ah...'A girl named Alice Wickefeller was first.Twin terrors

  • 15 The Evaluation Begins

Damon's attack on Ken had been so short that it was almost impossible for Alex to observe any possible weaknesses or flaws. And now, Damon was down, groaning at the root of a tree while he took his battle stance with his body augmented with magic, still observing his opponent who had already started to eat his orange."Fuu..." Ken let out a deep breath. "Let's see how this goes."With a burst of speed, Alex rushed towards Ken, with his hand outstretched to grab his bracelet arm. However, in the last second, Alex halted his charge.Halting his charge gave him the chance to see Ken's leg fly up like a rocket to hit him in the face.If he had not stopped his charge, he would've run headfirst into that foot. But even though he stopped his charge, he was still not out of range of Ken's kick, but he could see it coming, and that made all the difference in the world.Without wasting any motion after halting his charge, Alex ducked under Ken's kick and tackled his other leg causing his maste

  • 14 Training With Master Ken

The boys fought the mannequin for a few weeks. The sheer impossibility of this training level forced them to begin to work together and before they knew it, they had successfully disarmed all 6 arms of the mannequin. Alex seemed contented with himself for achieving such a feat while Damon still sulked, wishing that he had destroyed the mannequin before that stage of the training was over.During the weeks that they fought the mannequin, Ken had made them do workouts in the mornings before facing the mannequin. After they had successfully disarmed it, if you looked at the boys, you would scarcely believe that these were the same scrawny boys that walked into the Blakk Guild a few weeks ago."Bravo, bravo." Ken clapped as he walked up behind them as they sat on the floor before the deactivated mannequin, all swords on the floor. The two boys turned to look at him smiling as he walked towards them."Now would you mind telling me what the entire point of this sword play was?" Damon asked

  • 13 Training With The Mannequin

Ken went behind a tree and produced a wooden mannequin. The mannequin stood at about 7 feet tall with six arms and a manic expression carved onto what was supposed to be its face."What is that?" Alex asked,"This right here is an enchanted mannequin designed to be your training partner." Ken replied as he stood the mannequin on its feet."What's it for?" Alex asked again,"What else?" Ken replied, "for training you two dummies."Alex was confused. How would a wooden mannequin be his training partner? Would it be like a punching bag or something? While Alex and Damon tried to figure out how the mannequin was supposed to help them in their training, Ken produced 6 wooden swords and placed them in each hand of the mannequin. It was then that Alex and Damon suspected that something was different about the mannequin. "Wait a minute..." Alex muttered to himself, "master Ken said that it was enchanted. Does that mean...."Suddenly, there was a mysterious sound and the hollow eyes of the ma

  • 12 Evaluation Explanation

"Now, before we begin any training, you have to understand how evaluations are carried out"The evaluations consist of 3 phases. In the first phase, you are tested based on your physical abilities, which include your speed, strength, agility, endurance, and all that. In the second phase, your amount of magic power is measured. There's not much anyone can do to help themselves there. The amount of magic power you will have throughout your entire career as an ability user has pretty much already been determined from the day you awakened so that one is settled. "Now, the third phase, that's the interesting part. You are tested based on how well you can combine the first two phases in real-life situations. That is to say that the third phase will be something like a survival phase. All of you who will be undergoing the evaluation will be thrust into an unforgiving environment with a finish line. No one knows what the environment is, which is why we need to prepare for anything. You will
