4 The Awakening
last update2025-09-01 20:14:04

It was finally the day of the Awakening. All of the 15-year-olds in the kingdom were gathered at the town square.

There were different emotions on all of their faces. Some were excited, and some were nervous, but none of them were more on edge than the children from the orphanage.

This was the moment that would define the rest of their lives. A lot of them were already too old for adoption and if they didn't get any ability from the runestone then they would return to the orphanage to live a miserable life till they turned 18 and would be released into the world after which they would probably go on to commit a heinous crime and either end up in jail or dead.

This was their last shot at having a decent life.

Alex, most of all, clasped his runestone firmly in his hands.

In the few days before the Awakening, Flash and his gang had not bothered Alex so much. Everyone had been so excited about the ceremony that he had suddenly become insignificant to them — like an old toy that had been outgrown.

He was grateful for the break. It allowed him to collect his thoughts and know what his next course of action would be.

He did not have high hopes for his runestone. Every other person's runestone looked colourful and warm, while his own was black and cold. He knew that it definitely wasn't a Black Magic ability runestone because he had seen one earlier. One of the kids present had one — that one gave off a dark glow.

His own looked like a regular black stone.

However, something was still off about the stone. He could feel it, but he couldn't quite place his finger on it.

However, he concluded within himself that even if he did not gain any magic abilities from the runestone, he wouldn't return to the orphanage. Magic ability or not, he was getting rid of the orphanage from his life for good.

Soon, the preliminaries to the Awakening ceremony began in full swing.

The people of the town who came to see the new magic users cheered from the stands, the guild representatives who came to recruit the latest magic users watched with interest, the priests and paladins who organised the ceremony moved from one child to the other offering instructions, and finally, the king and his cabinet were unveiled — the entire party was present.

It was time for the proper awakening ceremony to begin.

The children were all bundled together and encircled by a chain of priests and paladins with their magic auras at full display and a smoking calabash. Inside the calabash was an incense that enhanced magical potency.

The children were all ordered to crush their runestones when the trumpets blew.

There was complete pin-drop silence as everyone waited for the trumpets to sound. The only sound that could be heard from the villagers around was a crying baby that was being hushed by its mother.

Alex looked around him. Even though everyone was quiet and trying to look brave, he could swear that he could hear their heartbeats thundering behind their chests.

Soon enough, there was the sound of the trumpets, and everyone crushed their runestones.

Suddenly, there were multiple flashes of light and cries from the children.

When the light died down, it was as if a lot of the children had changed physically. The Awakening changed their appearance — some looked bigger, some had different hair colour, some had different skin colour while some did not experience any change at all. Those who did not experience any change at all were the unlucky ones — the ones who could not get any magic ability from a runestone.

Suddenly, the air was filled with cries of celebration and cries of lamentation.

Some jumped and punched their fists in the air while others fell to the ground and cried.

As all of this happened, two children were standing calmly and quietly — almost as if they were not a part of the entire ceremony.

The first one was the boy whom Alex had seen with a Black runestone earlier. Apparently, he had awakened a Black magic ability. His hair was darker, his clothes were black, and it was as if there was darkness slithering around him. No matter how much light was around, it just seemed like the light never reached him.

Black magic ability was one of the rarest magic abilities in the world, so it was only a matter of time before the guilds started rushing after him.

The other child who was standing calmly away from all the noise and celebrations was Alex.

He had a shocked expression on his face. He had not expected to gain a magic ability from his runestone.

He could feel the obvious changes in his body. His hair had turned grey, his skin had turned pale, and the entire area around him seemed to have been drained of its colour. It was as if Alex and his immediate surroundings were in black and white.

As rare as Black was in the magic world, Grey magic ability was even rarer, and people knew very little about it. As a result of that, no guild approached Alex immediately. Rather, they looked at him like he was a creep who had just fallen out of the sky.

Alex was not offended, though. He knew that human beings were very shallow-minded creatures. They have always been afraid of things that they did not understand.

On the other hand, he was pleasantly surprised at his magic ability. It seemed so interesting to him, but he knew next to nothing about it. However, he needed to figure out how to switch off the Black and white aura that he was giving. It was making him stand out unnecessarily.

Just as he was worrying about that, the air was suddenly pierced by multiple explosions accompanied by screams of pain and panic.

There was a crack there. The crystal ball was made of a material that was almost indestructible. It was done so that it would be able to withstand different amounts of magic without breaking. But Alex had casually cracked it."This kid..." the supervisor muttered as Alex left, "we might have a beast in our hands."Alex could feel all the eyes on him as he walked back to where the other candidates were standing. "Is he the one who was given an S rank?""I can't believe it. He doesn't look like an S rank.""I guess we shouldn't judge a book by its cover."But amidst all the stares, the one he derived the most pride in was Damon's. Damon's gaze was filled with surprise, anger, hate and jealousy. Alex felt like walking up to him and laughing in his face. All throughout their training, Damon had looked down on Alex because he believed that because he was from a noble family, he was superior to Alex who was a commoner. 'Fate has no favorites huh...' Alex thought as he spared Damon a brie

The scoreboard also rapidly updated the supervisors' scores in real time.At the end of the first phase; the 800 candidates were ranked on the scoreboard.Alex found himself feeling strangely nervous as his eyes scanned the scoreboard for his name.He started from the bottom and yet he still hadn't found it."....400...300...200...100...50...25...15...10... oh, there it is."He had conveniently landed at the 5th position. He turned to look at the multitude of candidates gathered there for their evaluation and thought, 'can I really be the 5th 'strongest' candidate here?'He shook his head and turned back to the scoreboard, 'I guess master Ken was right... his training really set us apart. By the way who are the 4 stronger than I am?'Damon was 2nd.'Ah...'A girl named Alice Wickefeller was first.Twin terrors

Damon's attack on Ken had been so short that it was almost impossible for Alex to observe any possible weaknesses or flaws. And now, Damon was down, groaning at the root of a tree while he took his battle stance with his body augmented with magic, still observing his opponent who had already started to eat his orange."Fuu..." Ken let out a deep breath. "Let's see how this goes."With a burst of speed, Alex rushed towards Ken, with his hand outstretched to grab his bracelet arm. However, in the last second, Alex halted his charge.Halting his charge gave him the chance to see Ken's leg fly up like a rocket to hit him in the face.If he had not stopped his charge, he would've run headfirst into that foot. But even though he stopped his charge, he was still not out of range of Ken's kick, but he could see it coming, and that made all the difference in the world.Without wasting any motion after halting his charge, Alex ducked under Ken's kick and tackled his other leg causing his maste

  • 14 Training With Master Ken

The boys fought the mannequin for a few weeks. The sheer impossibility of this training level forced them to begin to work together and before they knew it, they had successfully disarmed all 6 arms of the mannequin. Alex seemed contented with himself for achieving such a feat while Damon still sulked, wishing that he had destroyed the mannequin before that stage of the training was over.During the weeks that they fought the mannequin, Ken had made them do workouts in the mornings before facing the mannequin. After they had successfully disarmed it, if you looked at the boys, you would scarcely believe that these were the same scrawny boys that walked into the Blakk Guild a few weeks ago."Bravo, bravo." Ken clapped as he walked up behind them as they sat on the floor before the deactivated mannequin, all swords on the floor. The two boys turned to look at him smiling as he walked towards them."Now would you mind telling me what the entire point of this sword play was?" Damon asked

Ken went behind a tree and produced a wooden mannequin. The mannequin stood at about 7 feet tall with six arms and a manic expression carved onto what was supposed to be its face."What is that?" Alex asked,"This right here is an enchanted mannequin designed to be your training partner." Ken replied as he stood the mannequin on its feet."What's it for?" Alex asked again,"What else?" Ken replied, "for training you two dummies."Alex was confused. How would a wooden mannequin be his training partner? Would it be like a punching bag or something? While Alex and Damon tried to figure out how the mannequin was supposed to help them in their training, Ken produced 6 wooden swords and placed them in each hand of the mannequin. It was then that Alex and Damon suspected that something was different about the mannequin. "Wait a minute..." Alex muttered to himself, "master Ken said that it was enchanted. Does that mean...."Suddenly, there was a mysterious sound and the hollow eyes of the ma

  • 12 Evaluation Explanation

"Now, before we begin any training, you have to understand how evaluations are carried out"The evaluations consist of 3 phases. In the first phase, you are tested based on your physical abilities, which include your speed, strength, agility, endurance, and all that. In the second phase, your amount of magic power is measured. There's not much anyone can do to help themselves there. The amount of magic power you will have throughout your entire career as an ability user has pretty much already been determined from the day you awakened so that one is settled. "Now, the third phase, that's the interesting part. You are tested based on how well you can combine the first two phases in real-life situations. That is to say that the third phase will be something like a survival phase. All of you who will be undergoing the evaluation will be thrust into an unforgiving environment with a finish line. No one knows what the environment is, which is why we need to prepare for anything. You will
