5 The Attack

The priests and paladins reacted instantly and professionally to the explosions.

Most of them tried to huddle all the children together like sheep and encircled them to protect them.

The rest jumped to assist the Royal guards in protecting the king.

The sudden fear and panic that came with the sudden attack had caused many of the children to subconsciously retract their abilities — including Alex. In fact, they did not even feel like people who had just recently awakened, they felt weak and helpless.

A few moments ago, a large blood-red dome had appeared in the sky. The presence of that dome prevented anyone from teleporting in or out of the town square.

"A magic barrier dome? Shit, they mean business." Alex overheard one of the paladins mutter to himself in panic.

People had been running helter-skelter since the explosions and now with the appearance of the dome, there was nowhere to run to. There was no way to even tell where the enemy was coming from because no hostile figure had appeared yet. Still, there was panic because everyone knew that something was terribly wrong.

All of a sudden, some of the people in the crowd began to melt and shift into hideous creatures that had scaly skin and horns. Some of them had red skin while others had black skin. Some held weapons while some were empty-handed. However, one thing they all had in common was that there was a sinister, blood thirsty smile on their lips.

"Demons..." Everyone gasped almost simultaneously.

The people who were beside the demons before they shifted suddenly began to scamper away but they were instantly cut down before they could move.

A few of the guards, priests and paladins jumped into action and tried to protect the villagers but there was only so much they could do. They were few in number because the majority of their forces were protecting the children and the king who were the kingdom's most valuable assets at that moment.

It wasn't too difficult to guess the motive of the demons at that moment. They were trying to kill off the next generation of the kingdom's magic ability users thereby weakening its military force. It was a neat plan — infiltrate the Awakening then nip them in the bud.

One would wonder why the demons did not attack before the Awakening ceremony began. That was because they did not plan to kill all of the newly awakened, they would take away the ones with interesting magic abilities and groom them to become double agents but if they were uncooperative then they would extract their magic and kill them.

The guards, priests and paladins who jumped to the villagers' rescue were getting overwhelmed. The sheer number of the demon forces was too much for them to handle. However, they couldn't give up. They had to hold on for the sake of the future generation that they were trying to protect.

The chief guard who was protecting the king watched the entire debacle with suspicion. There was something terribly off about this attack. He noticed that there were only demon foot-soldiers, there were no demon commanders or generals — and that was strange because you could not find demon foot soldiers without someone commanding them nearby.

The moment he realised this, there was a sudden shift in magic energy around them and from his peripheral vision, he caught one of the guards melting away to morph into a demon commander.

"Got you."

With a wide swing of his sword, he struck the demon commander and the two of them were sent flying in different directions.

The chief guard gritted his teeth as he tightened his grip on his sword.

This demon commander was no joke.

Although he had caught the commander while he was vulnerable. His tough skin had still made it impossible for the sword to cause any damage at all even though the chief guard had augmented that strike with 100% of his magic power.

The demon commander stood unhurt a few metres away from the king where he had been knocked down. His aura made the chief guard feel like a fly in his presence.

The chief guard didn't need to be told that if he tried to engage this demon, he would end up dead, but he had no option, he had to do his duty and protect his liege.

He looked at the king from his peripheral vision. He was a handsome, soft-faced, kind man with yellow hair because of his affinity for Yellow magic. The man looked like he couldn't even kill a fly.

The chief guard knew that it was dangerous to have such a king in such perilous times but the man was fair, honest and treated them equally, so it did not matter that he was not a magic power house like the other Kings. He would make sure that he laid his life on the line for the sake of the man and the sake of the kingdom.

His attention went back to the demon commander and it was then that he knew that he had made a terrible mistake. He had lost his concentration while a demon commander was standing before him and now that his concentration was back, what he could see was a huge longsword in a vertical slash coming for his head.

The attack wasn't that fast, he knew he could dodge it but before he could react, he saw himself completely out of harm's way with the king holding his shoulder.

The sword that was supposed to have cleaved him in half struck the ground and got stuck there.

"You shouldn't lose focus in front of an enemy Alfredo." The king said,

The chief guard's eyes widened as he looked at his king. He had never seen this side of him before, in fact, he had never seen him in combat ever.

His yellow hair was glowing, his pupils were glowing yellow too and there were crackles of yellow electricity snaking through his entire body.

The Royal robe had been cast away to reveal a sleek yellow and white armour that clung to the King's toned and muscular body.

"Y...yes sir." The chief guard responded. He was apparently oppressed by the King's flashy display of magic.

As a Grade 6 magic ability user, he always believed he was fairly powerful but seeing his king who looked like he was easily a Grade 8, he felt weak and useless.

The demon commander grinned contentedly when he saw the King's sudden change in appearance.

"Good... a worthy opponent."

"Shut up." The king replied apathetically, and before the demon commander could blink, his headless body crashed to the ground while the king stood a few metres away with a yellow-bladed dagger stained with demon blood on his left hand and the head of the demon commander on his right.

There was a crack there. The crystal ball was made of a material that was almost indestructible. It was done so that it would be able to withstand different amounts of magic without breaking. But Alex had casually cracked it."This kid..." the supervisor muttered as Alex left, "we might have a beast in our hands."Alex could feel all the eyes on him as he walked back to where the other candidates were standing. "Is he the one who was given an S rank?""I can't believe it. He doesn't look like an S rank.""I guess we shouldn't judge a book by its cover."But amidst all the stares, the one he derived the most pride in was Damon's. Damon's gaze was filled with surprise, anger, hate and jealousy. Alex felt like walking up to him and laughing in his face. All throughout their training, Damon had looked down on Alex because he believed that because he was from a noble family, he was superior to Alex who was a commoner. 'Fate has no favorites huh...' Alex thought as he spared Damon a brie

He turned to look at the multitude of candidates gathered there for their evaluation and thought, 'can I really be the 5th 'strongest' candidate here?'He shook his head and turned back to the scoreboard, 'I guess master Ken was right... his training really set us apart. By the way who are the 4 stronger than I am?'Damon was 2nd.'Ah...'A girl named Alice Wickefeller was first.Twin terrors

Damon's attack on Ken had been so short that it was almost impossible for Alex to observe any possible weaknesses or flaws. And now, Damon was down, groaning at the root of a tree while he took his battle stance with his body augmented with magic, still observing his opponent who had already started to eat his orange."Fuu..." Ken let out a deep breath. "Let's see how this goes."With a burst of speed, Alex rushed towards Ken, with his hand outstretched to grab his bracelet arm. However, in the last second, Alex halted his charge.Halting his charge gave him the chance to see Ken's leg fly up like a rocket to hit him in the face.If he had not stopped his charge, he would've run headfirst into that foot. But even though he stopped his charge, he was still not out of range of Ken's kick, but he could see it coming, and that made all the difference in the world.Without wasting any motion after halting his charge, Alex ducked under Ken's kick and tackled his other leg causing his maste

  • 14 Training With Master Ken

The boys fought the mannequin for a few weeks. The sheer impossibility of this training level forced them to begin to work together and before they knew it, they had successfully disarmed all 6 arms of the mannequin. Alex seemed contented with himself for achieving such a feat while Damon still sulked, wishing that he had destroyed the mannequin before that stage of the training was over.During the weeks that they fought the mannequin, Ken had made them do workouts in the mornings before facing the mannequin. After they had successfully disarmed it, if you looked at the boys, you would scarcely believe that these were the same scrawny boys that walked into the Blakk Guild a few weeks ago."Bravo, bravo." Ken clapped as he walked up behind them as they sat on the floor before the deactivated mannequin, all swords on the floor. The two boys turned to look at him smiling as he walked towards them."Now would you mind telling me what the entire point of this sword play was?" Damon asked

  • 13 Training With The Mannequin

Ken went behind a tree and produced a wooden mannequin. The mannequin stood at about 7 feet tall with six arms and a manic expression carved onto what was supposed to be its face."What is that?" Alex asked,"This right here is an enchanted mannequin designed to be your training partner." Ken replied as he stood the mannequin on its feet."What's it for?" Alex asked again,"What else?" Ken replied, "for training you two dummies."Alex was confused. How would a wooden mannequin be his training partner? Would it be like a punching bag or something? While Alex and Damon tried to figure out how the mannequin was supposed to help them in their training, Ken produced 6 wooden swords and placed them in each hand of the mannequin. It was then that Alex and Damon suspected that something was different about the mannequin. "Wait a minute..." Alex muttered to himself, "master Ken said that it was enchanted. Does that mean...."Suddenly, there was a mysterious sound and the hollow eyes of the ma

  • 12 Evaluation Explanation

"Now, before we begin any training, you have to understand how evaluations are carried out"The evaluations consist of 3 phases. In the first phase, you are tested based on your physical abilities, which include your speed, strength, agility, endurance, and all that. In the second phase, your amount of magic power is measured. There's not much anyone can do to help themselves there. The amount of magic power you will have throughout your entire career as an ability user has pretty much already been determined from the day you awakened so that one is settled. "Now, the third phase, that's the interesting part. You are tested based on how well you can combine the first two phases in real-life situations. That is to say that the third phase will be something like a survival phase. All of you who will be undergoing the evaluation will be thrust into an unforgiving environment with a finish line. No one knows what the environment is, which is why we need to prepare for anything. You will
